Blue n White Rover Posted August 19, 2009 Posted August 19, 2009 The Gillingham game next week may be a good game to watch. Salgado and Kalinic both should be playing, we may also get to see Dunn,Grella, Reid and Emerton back in action. Nicko, any idea on what wage Salgado will be on? Excellent - A Good defender - cheerio Warnock! Shame 'cos he's English but just not solid enough. You're kidding right?
PAFELL Posted August 19, 2009 Posted August 19, 2009 Absolutely bizarre one...I hear Rovers are bringing in ANOTHER centre half on trial...no idea what this means. And, by the way, after watching top-flight football for 29 years I'll say it again...the Premier League this season is going to have more ordinary teams in it than at any other time. I agree with that based on the fact nobody has signed any 'star' type player. Many have sold, pompey especaily. Even the top 4 have not done that much in the transfer market. Man U will miss CR more than they realise - without having replaced him. Liverpol are skint. I do think Fulham will have another good season this season - Duff is a good signing for them in my view.
Wing Wizard Windy Miller Posted August 19, 2009 Posted August 19, 2009 I'm sorry, don't we have Paul Gallagher, Nikola Kalinić and David Hoilett? Gallagher & Hoilett were already at the club, Kalinic is Roque's replacement or if you like he can be Derbs replacement and we haven't replaced Roque
TimmyJimmy Posted August 19, 2009 Posted August 19, 2009 My first thoughts were that zurab could be off so we're looking at someone to come on to cover his place in the squad. Or 3 at the back Or Nelsons buggered
The Prof. Posted August 19, 2009 Posted August 19, 2009 On Warnock You're kidding right? No - said all along hes suspect defensively (thats why Liverpool got rid). Willing, a bit gobby, but if you count the goals he's been responsible for - often due to a lack of concentration, poor positioning or going AWOL - a top club won't go near. Allardyce knows a good defender and he knows Warnock isn't one. Luckily Mental O'Neil has some dollars to spend!
Hughesy Posted August 19, 2009 Posted August 19, 2009 So what would people do now if Villa offered £8m? Cover for Left back - Ollson, Givet & Salgado
RibbleValleyRover Posted August 19, 2009 Posted August 19, 2009 So what would people do now if Villa offered £8m? Turn it down. We aren't going to bring in a midfielder as we will need to sell an existing one (that chance has gone). If we sell the money won't be spent (well whats left of it).
The Prof. Posted August 19, 2009 Posted August 19, 2009 Oh - we'll get a midfielder - if the board don't use the fee to pay Salgado's wages.
novella Posted August 19, 2009 Posted August 19, 2009 Premier League have confirmed that the window will stay open an extra day until midnight on September 1st because of the bank holiday.
unluckymorton Posted August 19, 2009 Posted August 19, 2009 Excellent - A Good defender - cheerio Warnock! Shame 'cos he's English but just not solid enough. Are you on drugs??? Just not solid enough? who do you want to bring in? Terry? Puyol? Vidic?
nicko Posted August 19, 2009 Posted August 19, 2009 I think we have immensely improved in quantity and quality since last season. The only player of notice we have lost this summer has been Roque and we have replaced him well. Derbs was never going to cut it. Tugay didn't have the best of terms last time and Mokoena is Mokoena. We have also replaced Ooijer with someone of quality for free. Wouldn't you say our squad is stronger then last seasons, especially with players returning from injury? Also the mystery defender...? Renato Civelli... Free transfer? I think you still need a midfielder or two. Hopefully the two new strikers will be an improvement, but only time will confirm that. The defence looks ok, the midfield short, the attack is potentially fine. In comparison with others in the mix Rovers are looking ok but no more. This league looks so ordinary that a couple of imaginative captures could send a team from 16th to 6th...it's THAT tight. And, no. It's not Civelli.
nicko Posted August 19, 2009 Posted August 19, 2009 NICKO: There's a fee involved for the defender? IF Warnock leaves, we'd probably get around 7,5 m - surely the only reason for doing so would be to bring in a midfielder, not balance the books? The defender would cost, but not much. Warnock would have to cost a lot to make his sale attractive...and you would need to be sure of how the money was being spent. This window has got a few twists and turns yet, methinks.

IF Warnock is to leave I would only be happy if we could shell out Andrews as well. If we do that we have the opportinity to bring another midfielder. Unless - I say no, because of his versatility!
Bobby G Posted August 19, 2009 Posted August 19, 2009 I agree with nicko. It will be a tight league and one of the weakest ones to date. No one has really become stronger, so the gap can close with a couple of signings for any team.

Big Fat Sam Posted August 19, 2009 Posted August 19, 2009 So what would people do now if Villa offered £8m? Cover for Left back - Ollson, Givet & Salgado So a centre half, an inexperienced youngster and a right footed, right back. That doesn't sound like ample cover to me if I'm being honest. I wouldn't sell Warnock for 12M with all our play coming down the flanks we need attacking full backs. Provided Gallys sale doesn't get put to covering Salgado's wages then surely we could get one midfielder of better standard than we have in on loan with that.

This league looks so ordinary that a couple of imaginative captures could send a team from 16th to 6th...it's THAT tight. And, no. It's not Civelli. Couldn't agree more about needing a midfielder. With Stevie do you know if he wants to go??? Is he happy now Sam's in charge??? Cheers PS would we have heard of this defender?? I've been wondering if we couldn't loan one of Dunn or Reid to a champioship club till Jan and ease them back in at a lower level. We could then use the wages we save to help with a loan for 6 months or so???
Neil Weaver Posted August 19, 2009 Posted August 19, 2009 Premier League have confirmed that the window will stay open an extra day until midnight on September 1st because of the bank holiday. Good old Premier League. That'd be the Bank Holiday that's been at the end of August for the last gawd knows how many years. Window extended by a day last year, extended by a day this year, so in a few years' time...............
Big Fat Sam Posted August 19, 2009 Posted August 19, 2009 I'd hate to see Warnock go. WHOEVER else we put at left (assuming Olsson isn't up to the job, which I don't think he is) we'd be putting a square peg in a round hole. And similarly if we start playing Warnock in midfield it's the same story IMO. I think people would soon by crying for him to revert to left back. He defends well and gets forward well. His passing is not as good. So for me he shouldn't be in midfield, but in his natural left back position. Isn't the modern full back regarded as the most demanding role in the present game. Wingers who can defend and attack as well, up and down all game. We have one, and its Stevie who ticks most of the boxes for the role and why people are even considering it is beyond me? If we play Givet there who will not get up and down like stevie, you reduce the number of attacking players by one every game. With two sitters in midfield and the majority of our play coming from wide we need full backs who can do both roles, Givet cannot great defence but will offer nothing at all going forward. So if you play him there we reduce the number of attackers, he would be a square peg in a round hole. Not a positive move in my eyes. I would consider it one way though, Shorey (someone who's seen him recently can comment, but I haven't. But he looked alright at Reading) and enough money to ensure that I can permantly sign a quality central midfielder. We couldn't take Coker as we'd get no cash to pay his wages so 10 million plus Shorey and he's there's. But that will never happen, so he stays we need him. Over to you Martin, but I doubt you could decide what to have for dinner by the time the window closes. I wonder how he picks a team?????
Iceman Posted August 19, 2009 Posted August 19, 2009 Scott Brown or Niko Krankjar would be ideal for central midfield. However with no money, Dunn should pull his finger out his and sort himself out. The same applies to Reid. Scott Brown or Niko Krankjar would be ideal for central midfield. However with no money, Dunn should pull his finger out his and sort himself out. The same applies to Reid.
Jackson Posted August 19, 2009 Posted August 19, 2009 If we play Givet there who will not get up and down like stevie, you reduce the number of attacking players by one every game. Not sure about this. With Givet behind, I reckon MGP will be less inclined to track back and push forward more. Well, theoretically, anyway.
Big Fat Sam Posted August 19, 2009 Posted August 19, 2009 Not sure about this. With Givet behind, I reckon MGP will be less inclined to track back and push forward more. Well, theoretically, anyway. Yes Ped's covers for stevie but he is still in the final third already for most attacks so theres two of them at present. Givet won't be, he doesn't have the physhical attributes for it nor the crossing ability so it would be like having one less attacker Because of Givet not being able to overlap/cross as often or as accuratly as Steve does currently. Klaninic should do well on crosses as does Di Santo (his words) so if we have four wide players who can all whip in a good ball then our chances of scoring increase as well, and thats percentage football Givet has also just played a blinder at center back so don't move him, I also get the impression Nelsen has torn his medial since I haven't seen or heard anything so am assuming the worst. Or at least thats how I see it. The other option is Sam's traditional formation and I prefer two up top.
