Manc Rover Posted August 26, 2009 Posted August 26, 2009 Unless Sam sees Givet as being our left back and Chimbonda is being bought in to provide cover at centre back and left back if needs be, I don't see the point of this signing. If we had bought him in as our right back instead of Jacobsen, I would have been happy enough. In reality we should be looking for a natural left back to replace Warnock if he leaves, not a right back who can do a job out there if needs be. Totally agree. He's a right back and we already have salgado, jacobsen and brett. even andrews or zurab can play there. we need a LB and probably another CB too!

John Posted August 26, 2009 Posted August 26, 2009 Speaking to spurs fans in the office and think he is quality. They think his recent defending last season has been poor though. I still don't think we need a right back though

Iceman Posted August 26, 2009 Posted August 26, 2009 Its simple. Robbo Jacobsen Samba Chimbonda Givet Salgado Diouf Dunn Nzonzi Gamst Benni Or Robbo Jacobsen Chimbonda Samba Givet Salgado Diouf Dunn Hoiliett Gamst Kalinic The 2nd lineup will allow Dunn, Diouf, Hoiliett and Gamst to link up with Kalinic. Salgado to protect the back 4.

Salgado to protect the back 4. Which is great but 2 things. Chimbonda IS NOT a left back or a centre back. He is a RB who could fit in there. Salgado IS NOT a defensive midfield sitter. He is an attacking right fullback. Square pegs in round holes and round pegs in square holes does not work permanently. Look how much better after we replaced Neill at left back with Warnock(2 defenders who are similar in talent etc but Warnock is left footed) I just dont understand this signing at all, especially if Nicko is right and Sam is also looking for a specialist Left back....I just dont get it.
The Rover of Finland Posted August 26, 2009 Posted August 26, 2009 Any news on Benni´s possible move to Ajax? If that happends Sam might go 4-3-3 formation. Actually it would make sence. Robbo Chimbonda-Samba-Nelsen-Givet (Jakobsen on right, Chimbonda CD when Nelsen is injured) Salgado Emerton Dunn Diouf Gamst Kalinic Which is great but 2 things. Chimbonda IS NOT a left back or a centre back. He is a RB who could fit in there. Salgado IS NOT a defensive midfield sitter. He is an attacking right fullback. Hierro wasn´t midfielder either before Bolton. Salgado´s pace must have suffered a bit since his best days. There´s a great chance he will play central midfielder for us.
John Posted August 26, 2009 Posted August 26, 2009 Say he is awful at left back as one footed. Played ok at centre back under jol but postioning can be a bit suspect when playing there.

Hughesy Posted August 26, 2009 Posted August 26, 2009 If we sign Chimbonda, then why buy another left back too, instead of pumping the cash into midfield? I am having a feeling that we are getting heavy all over. In fact our squad is much bigger than before the summer, and I would argue that the wage bill is as much if not more than before the summer, so those arguments about curbing wages should go out of the window. Never! Do the maths mate - RSC was taking 60-65k a week alone. We havent brought anyone in who will be on more than 30-40k. Chimbonda - Good player, can play as full back on either side....I work with a Tottenham fan who said he is a good player but doesnt get a look in now over Corluka.
thenodrog Posted August 26, 2009 Posted August 26, 2009 When he first played for Wigan he was as good a right back as there was in the Premier league, decent at centre half as well. Then it all went to his head and his form went to pot. Never quite been the same since. I bet Jaccobson's scratching his head right know. We've got Chimbonda, Andrews, Reid, Jaccobson, Emerton, Salgado all with recent experience at right back. That's not counting Zurab and Nelsen who've played there in the past. We are becoming to right backs what Man City are to strikers! A very talented player who at Wigan he was absolutely superb. This is strange to say the least but according to Wiki he's a centre half and left back who normally plays at right back! He's lost his way in recent times and SA will prob be the best man to resurrect his career. Moving to Spurs has proved a massive set back for him and a move which he must regret ...... now where have we heard that before? My only worry with some of these signings is that maybe there are one or two too many who are proven but ageing. BRFC will likley be their swan song. We made a massive profit on the Hughes era and when Samba goes the profits from Hughes will be complete and verifiable but in 2-3 years time who or how many will we be able to sell?
Bobby G Posted August 26, 2009 Posted August 26, 2009 Ok out totalling: Tugay out at lets say 30k, Roque at 60k, Gallagher at 15k, Mokoena at 15k, Ooijer at 25k, Derbs at 15k, Warnock at 25k = 185k approximately In totalling: Di Santo at 15k, Kalinic at 25k, Salgado at 40k at least, Elrio at 15k, Jacobsen at 15k at least, Chimbonda at 35k at least, Junior at 10k = 155k Thats approximately the same or have I missed anyone? My point is the wage bill will be effectively the same as before when its all said and done.
mark Posted August 26, 2009 Posted August 26, 2009 It's not depressing me, don't forget it would also leave around 6.5M to get in a midfielder if we spend even 5m on a midfielder i will jump from my office window, dash across whitehall and scale big ben but naked.

Any player that makes the French squad for the defence cant be a bad player - see Givet! Who will we have that is worth big money in the future? NZonzi, Hoilett, Samba, Kalinic - they are the next batch to make big money........
thenodrog Posted August 26, 2009 Posted August 26, 2009 Never met the bloke. He gets this reputation from the same press that we think lambasts us at every opportunity ( no offence Nicko) yet we're quick to take them at their word on other issues. I thought Sav had a terrible attitude before he came but proved me wrong. Time will tell. Thats your own fault for taking the press seriously Jonny. I'd admired Savages effort, commitment and overall contribution since his days at Leicester City. Every time he came to Ewood he was a thorn in the side of our midfielders and indeed any midfield that liked to play intricate passing play and 'put their foot on the ball'. Got to add that after seeing him at the Hordens I quite like Sav the bloke too.
thenodrog Posted August 26, 2009 Posted August 26, 2009 What. Is wrong with you? Scouser lets you down (quelle surprise as they say in Marseille). Which is where Sir Gael Givet hails from. Who in the tiltyard by far a more chivalrous knight than the Loser Scouser. And we have £8m . And..let me tell you having held an clove studded orange to my nose for the visit to Gillingham tonight, the future is bright. N Zoni is in the zone and Hoillet does not rhyme with toilet. We will be more than OK. Have faith. And get on your knees now and turn towards Rome and thank the Holy Father you are not a) Scouse or b)From bluddy Gillingham. Sure you haven't held any other plant extracts near your nose tonight ima? I remember Wigan fans talking about how Chimbonda threw his toys out and demanded to be sold to Spurs, which may give us a clue as to the type of professional he is. Not that he'd be the first of the kind to come to Rovers. ........ or more commonly leave the Rovers.

My point is the wage bill will be effectively the same as before when its all said and done. This is how I would see it, its a calculated guess......... In - Di Santo - 20k, Kalinic 29k, Salgado 30k, Elrio 12k, Jacobsen 15k, NZonzi 7.5k, Givet 25k, Greek Keeper 3k. (141k) Out - Tugay - 30K, Mokoena - 20K, Ooijer - 30K, RSC - 65K, Derbs - 20K, Gally - 20K, Villanueva - 8K, Simpson - 12K, Bunn - 5K, Treacy - 7.5K, Gunning - 3k, Marrow - 3k, Judge - 5k, Kane 3k (231k) 90k a week roughly shaved - or £4.68m (But the 320k we are under target has probably been paid for by the Gally money) Hoilett was already on our books.

Got to add that after seeing him at the Hordens I quite like Sav the bloke too. Guilty as charged Gordon. I learned my lesson hence my post. Not met him either but what I've heard from people who've worked with him he's a top bloke. I'm working on my judgement issues and taking each day at a time.

Wages will take time to curb as we allow unwanted players contracts to run down. Such is life as a football club, we can't keep top players yet bad players stick like sh1t to a blanket. The more of this I see the more I think it's crazy giving long contracts to any players but the very best. 5 years and 10m to Sol Campbell being about as stupid as it gets. The quicker they are promoted the sooner his usefulness runs out.
nicko Posted August 26, 2009 Posted August 26, 2009 Rovers are expecting two arrivals today... Getting a bit worried about a meeting between Portsmouth and Spurs last night re that possible Chimbonda-James swap. Find out more later. No PMs or questions please...trying to find out answers.
den Posted August 26, 2009 Posted August 26, 2009 I'm guessing with this happening so quickly that Rothen might be one of them. edit- or then again, one of them could be a left back. Don't have a clue really [no quips please].

jonv Posted August 26, 2009 Posted August 26, 2009 I am intrigued to see whether Chimbonda would want to join Portsmouth at the moment. I'm intrigued as to whether or not Chimbonda has a say in the matter
modes98 Posted August 26, 2009 Posted August 26, 2009 Whats the resell value on Chimonda and why cant he make it in the Spurs team. At £1.5m it is hardly a big loss, when compared to £5m on a striker that doesn't score that many. If he has a good season then we might be able to make a small profit. I would imagine his wages are quite high though. I'm glad I don't support Portsmouth! I was speaking to a pompey supporting friend last night and he says the messageboards are awful. Still he was hopeful that the takeover would go through today. They still haven't got a team capable of doing much and they have to be favourites for 20th now. I'm intrigued as to whether or not Chimbonda has a say in the matter He has some. He could very well sit out his deal at Spurs, which they wouldn't be to happy with.
