Just got this off a Villa forum:

"Villa can confirm they are in discussions with Blackburn Rovers over the transfer of Stephen Warnock"

So says a text from the club..

Warnock is going to Villa? First I've heard of it ;)

They really are ground-breaking these club text messages.

Well its the first official confirmation (as far as i know) from Villa that they are seeking to bring him in. I assume with this text alert they have sent out that a deal isn't far off.

I'm guessing that Chimbonda will be on similar wages to Warnock? Chimbonda the 30 year old jack of all trades master of none ego the size of a planet coming in for the 28 year old one of the best left backs in the prem Warnock.

(Please don't use that word again)ing fantastic deal

For Blackburn Rovers to be called an 'arse of a club' confuses me. So does the attitude to the club of many..(including Fat Sam). Are we an 'arse' of a club because of our size? or because nobody cares?

I mean, if nobody care's about Blackburn Rovers, who cares about the hundreds/thousands of other clubs in the rest of the footballing pyramid?

I know versatile footballers are valuable these days in modern football , but i always believe you play your best players in their best positions , all this talk of right backs playin centre half or right backs playin holding positions in midfield or whatever is nonsense!

No. Nor does anyone else on here Bellars. How it can be suggested that someone being sold by Ipswich can make it in the Prem begs explanation.

Garvan has been highly rated for a number of years and been mentioned a number of times as the next of the quality players to come through the Ipswich youth set up. Now I haven't seen him this year but i've seen him previously to know that he has quality.

Just because he's fallen out with Roy Keane, like 90% of the other players who play for him by all accounts does not mean he's not good enough for Ipswich. To suggest that a player from Ipswich cannot make it in the prem is a huge assumption and I only hope our scouts aren't as narrow minded when it comes to judging a player as you seem to be.

fcking fantastic deal

I doubt Chimbonda will command the same wage as Stevie - infact id be very suprised after the last few season's he has had compared. 10K saving a week I reckon.

Its not a direct swap, we'll be receiving about £6m more for Warnock than we're paying for Chimbonda

(whether Big Sam will see this cash remains to be seen)

i wonder whether us buying Chimbonda is just a clever plan to make ASEF's head explode in a hysterical overreaction to a player i believe he described as 'the most despicable player in football.'

Im slightly worried on why we need another right back.

I can't imagine us saving anything in the swap, more likely Chimbonda will command more than Warnock IMO.

I can't believe some people would rather sign someone they've never heard of, than a proven Premiership player? We need someone who can fit right in, we've already changed most of our team the last few months. Besides, 2 million pounds will get you nothing in today's market.

"If we got him we would have the following in defence- Jacobsen, Emerton, Salgado, Chimbonda, Givet, Nelsen, Samba, Olsson, Zurab."

Simple losing Nelson and Warnock has in effect left a gaping hole in three positions, CB/LB/LM

Emerton??? fitness, Olsson Jacobsen and Kishi ???? are they good enough kishi in particular has been very shaky since the start of pre-season, waiting until January could cost us badly and put is in the same position as last season when Sam joined, something I imagine he is trying to avoid.

Shore up the defence, see who makes it to January and re-access, though I do agree a playmaker is needed ASAP.

Yeah I agree with that about the defence, although I think Jacobsen looks a shrewd buy. But I still think the midfield is in a worst position. Grella, Reid, Dunn, Emerton are all fitness doubts. Van Heerden, Holliet are unproven in the premiership. Nzonzi looks promising for the future, Keith Andrews isn't a premiership starter, Salgado isn't a midfielder and Pedersen has yet to capture his old form on a regular basis. I just think we should buy Chimbonda and a creative midfielder with the Warnock money.

Surely, surely, surely there's enough cash left after the Warnock sale to bring in some midfield quality, especially if Nicko's right and these two are cheap options?

Sam has got all of the Warnock money to spend hasn't he Nicko?

You would think (and hope) so but I can't recall Sam ever suggesting that this is a priority area. First he admitted that he was prepared to blow the whole budget on a striker (or 2)........and he did. Then he switches his focus to defence in the light of the predicament with Warnock and Nelsen. So far he has done what he said he would do and I fear that trend will continue - especially as he waxed lyrical about Dunny"s performance last night.

How do you reckon? He had a big-money switch to Spurs and the brief spell and return at Sunderland wouldn't happen if he hadn't kept his big wages. If you think last seasons account for anything look at our high earners which has either been out of form or injured.

I also can't see Chimbonda as a left back, I guess he must be the utility man and a specialist left back coming in.

Fully agreed. I don't think you can even count Dunn as a central midfielder anymore. He either has to play in the hole in a 4-5-1 (like last night) or as a winger with a full back taking most of his defensive duties. He never was much of an allrounder even in his young fit days and as injuries and age has caught up, I don't think he have the legs for a central position in a 4-4-2

I cant see Sam getting his hands on that money. I say Reo Coker and 5mill for Warnock. I know Reo Coker aint the best, but im desperate for a midfielder. ;) *waits to be ripped apart for that comment*

The story at January was that he had taken a huge pay cut to join Spurs (again), but I still can't see him being on anything less than what's Warnock on now at Rovers - even if he would be on less at Spurs.
