Im guessing Shorey, the reason it could be quick is because we are talking to Villa already about Warnock

Almost certainly Shorey.

Hopefully he's not as bad as the Villa fans on this board suggest.

If a player wants to go and you get good money for him and replace him with two new faces - and a profit - then he could come from Mars.

Don't forget the profit! <_<

Heaven forbid we were allowed to reinvest all the money in the playing staff.

At least we'll have another set piece taker! (Although shades of Ian Harte spring to mind... <_<)

Somerset: As I've repeatedly said, I know he is. But I don't see who gets dropped. Offer some alternatives? Anyone?

Nelson's injury may be worse than reported - so replacement / cover needed for him.

In your opinion Nicko...I for one would rather have local boys given a chance ahead of questionable players like Grella, Andrews and the like...

IF we come out of this little episode minus Warnock but having added Chimbonda and either Garrido/Shorey...and trouser around £4million...perhaps allowing us to bring Rothen in then tbh that will have been pretty good business and definitely improve the squad. IF

Just as an aside I was reading somewhere that West Ham are trying to land Goran Pandev offering £5million euros + a 50% sell on clause. Now that HAS to be something that Rovers could consider - - fantastic player.

ADB - it would have to be Nelsen for me - dont think he has ever looked the same since the injury to his arse!

tough one with captain though. and with warnock off i dont see a ready replacement. salgado is an obvious one. I'd be interested to know what esteem Ryan is held in by BFS.

it better not be shorey, that would be a poor move. Take the cash and get someone with potential, not someone who has been deemed not good enough by a team until recently we used to compete with

Agree. My 3 guesses are Shorey, Bale, Garrido in that order. Unless its Silvestre, i cant think of any other left backs that their clubs are willing to sell. Then again, im still thinking Coloccini, Jose Enrique and Matt Taylor

Considering you don't even know who the new guy is but have him penciled in over Givet, I say we drop him and play Gael at left back.

I'd be happy with Shorey. At Reading, he was as good, if not better than Warnock (unfortunately he isn't now, but could always find his way again).

I'm assuming that he'll play because it'd make no sense to buy a specialist right back and then play a centre back in his position.

The more I think about it the more certain I am that it's Shorey.

Villa want rid of him, and we want a cheap left-back replacement for Warnock.

Of course it's a horrible message to send out, but it's clear from Allardyce press conferences that he couldn't care less about that.

You really having a bad day today eh ADB ;) you just have to find a spot for Givet, even if it means playing one up front. He is by far our best defender, and would be crazy to drop him, just to accomodate a new player. In saying that, anybody think we could line up like this:

Robbo

Salgado Samba Chimbonda Shorey

Givet

Diouf Dunn Nzonzi Gamst

Kalinic

That would give us Nzonzi breaking play up in midfield, with Givet covering the back 4. It would also allow Diouf, Dunn and Pedersen to link up with Kalinic

It's got to be Garrido.

City just brought in Silvinho and already have Bridge. Lescott has played LB on several occasions before so they are well and truly covered in that position. Also, they got him cheap (£1.5m if Wikipedia is to be believed). So considering he's their 4th choice LB I doubt they'd want much back for him and would therefore be within our budget.

I'd be fairly satisfied if it was Garrido. He's got a decent left peg and likes to bomb down the flanks ala Warnock. However, like the man he'd be replacing, he's prone to a calamity every now again. I'm guessing if Nelsen, Samba and Givet are all fit he probably wouldn't play anyway so it's not something I'm too concerned about.

Hopefully that will leave some money for the midfield. I'd probably try to ofload Zurab now as well. Sam clearly doesn't rate him so all he's doing is taking up space on the bench and eating up wages.

Shorey interview on the Birmingham Mail site today:

http://www.birminghammail.net/birmingham-s...97319-24535394/

He's talking a good game, wants to compete with Warnock for the left back slot etc., but also says:

“Will I still be here next week? Who knows? Who knows what’s going to happen? That’s football."

Personally, I'm undecided about Shorey as a replacement, if he could recapture his reading form then yes, although he's looked some way off that for some time, around about the time of the England cap I'd say.

Having said that, he's probably a better option than the afore mentioned Garrido though - good going forward but not great defensively according to a couple of City fans I work with.

Sounds like it is a specialist left-back as backup. It makes sense if we're not spending a ton of money and Sam doesn't think that Olsson is up to it.

With the assumption that he bought 3 right backs to use Salgado in midfield:

Everyone healthy:

Chimbonda/Samba/Nelsen/Givet

Nelsen injured:

Chimbonda/Samba/Givet/New Guy

Spencey7 why do you bother supporting the club? No matter what Sam does you find a way to knock and moan about it. Did you no appreciate the fine football that was played last night? Did you not think that Hoilett showed huge promise? Did the performance of N'zonzi in midfield not suggest that Sam has found a very promising young midfielder? Did Dunn not look the part in midfield? Didn't the performance of Givet at the back suggest that Sam has uncovered an excellent defender?

The bottom line is Warnock wants to leave. If the club can get a decent fee then it's good business - simple as that. It seems to me that Sam cares a great deal more for this club than you do. Certainly the fans responded well to him last night at Gillingham as he did to the fans. Perhaps if you could drag yourself away from the keyboard you might actually get to matches and start supporting the club that you say you follow. You might also find that the majority of us actually SUPPORT the club rather than knock it at every opportunity. That doesn't make us blind to the problems but merely underlines the fact that in times of difficulty it better to get behind your club rather than sit on the sidelines moaning.

I'm trying to work out why were buying Chimbonda, especially if we go and sign a left back. We have bought two right backs in during this transfer window, so I don't see him playing out there. We only have three centre backs, one of which is injured, so maybe Sam is seeing him as cover there. But Chimbonda isn't a centre back, he can just do a job there if needs be. I remember him getting tortured by Georgios Samaras and Chris Killen in the Wembley Cup when playing there! If Givet were to be our left back, you would imagine Chimbonda being bought into cover both left back and centre back, but again, hardly his natural position. And if we then go and buy a left back as well, then he will be either the starting left back or cover for Givet. So were does Chimbonda fit in? Is he just someone who can cover all positions across the back? Moreover, I can't believe that we seem to be focusing all our efforts in strengthening the defence, when we are crying out for a creative midfielder.
