Sounds like it is a specialist left-back as backup. It makes sense if we're not spending a ton of money and Sam doesn't think that Olsson is up to it.

With the assumption that he bought 3 right backs to use Salgado in midfield:

Everyone healthy:

Chimbonda/Samba/Nelsen/Givet

Nelsen injured:

Chimbonda/Samba/Givet/New Guy

Salgado really is a right back, i'd be surprised if he actually can do a job in central midfield. Hierro and Campo both had some experience playing in central midfield and they were both centre backs so the transition was pretty easy. It seems to me like Sam had a rush of blood to the head and thought "i must have this player" before actually looking at where he was going to play him.

The way i see it when everyone is fit:

Jacobsen/Salgado Nelsen Samba Givet

Sam will have to take the captaincy off Nelsen otherwise he has to play him (could be potential rammifications if he does take the captaincy off him). Samba is the only defender with any real pace and he needs to be played in order to help his development, that leaves Givet to the left back spot. Jacobsen hasn't looked that bad at right back and Salgado was a decent right back in his day. Chimbonda is a waste of a signing, if everyone is fit i can't see him starting. It would be better to look at someone younger who we can develop.

To be fair Ribble, Zurab wont play. Olssen is young, and wont play much. Nelsen, well could be out for a lengthy time. This leaves us short at the back, and you just get the feeling that Givet alongside Samba, Chimbonda will slot in at right back and new left back. The player i feel sorry for is Lars Jacobsen, who i feel has done a good job and might be sacrificed

Trust me guys, you don't want Shorey. He was overrated at Reading in the first place, made his name by being good at taking set pieces etc and the fact he is comfortable enough going forward with the ball, fact is he is a defender and he is pretty useless at that side of the game. No real bottle, weak in the challenge, the aerial ability of Verne Troyer, really think it's pointless taking him in exchange as it just weakens you and it isn't hard to find better than him out there.

Garvan has been highly rated for a number of years and been mentioned a number of times as the next of the quality players to come through the Ipswich youth set up. Now I haven't seen him this year but i've seen him previously to know that he has quality.

Just because he's fallen out with Roy Keane, like 90% of the other players who play for him by all accounts does not mean he's not good enough for Ipswich. To suggest that a player from Ipswich cannot make it in the prem is a huge assumption and I only hope our scouts aren't as narrow minded when it comes to judging a player as you seem to be.

He appears to have been dropped because of his displays MB, not because of a fall out with Keane. Plus, reading some of the views on the Ipswich boards, some of the fans don't seem to rate him at all.

If having the opinion that someone who's not doing the business at Ipswich, probably couldn't do a job in the top division of English football, is narrow minded, then you confuse me.

I can't see Salgado playing right back either to be honest. Jackobsen and Chimbonda will be able to play there, even if Chimbonda is being signed as a centreback.

The only place I see him playing is central midfield or filling in in the odd place due to injuries/resting etc. Otherwise the way we have gone about transfers makes no sense.

F***IT365.COM DISAPPEARS UP OWN BACK PASSAGE SHOCKER.

Shocking

'Blackburn boss Sam Allardyce is making a shock £1.5million swoop for Tottenham's unhappy Pascal Chimbonda,' writes a startled Alan Nixon in The Daily Mirror.

Shock, eh Alan? Was it as shocking as when you wrote in The People on June 7: 'Allardyce...is interested in Tottenham's Pascal Chimbonda'?

Or as shocking as when you wrote in The People on May 31: 'Tottenham are keen but want to throw players into a swap deal. French right-back Pascal Chimbonda may be part of the package'?

Or when The Daily Mail reported on June 12: 'Rovers are interested in Tottenham defender Pascal Chimbonda'?

Or when Sky Sports.com reported on July 27: 'Skysports.com understands Blackburn Rovers are considering an approach for Tottenham Hotspur defender Pascal Chimbonda'?

Or when....oh, you get the idea.

SO LET'S GET THIS STRAIGHT...I AM GETTING STICK FOR BREAKING THE FIRST INTEREST IN THE PLAYER, FOLLOWING IT THROUGH...AND THEN BEING SURPRISED WHEN IT CAME BACK ON YESTERDAY...AS WERE MOST NEUTRAL PEOPLE...

ANY CHANCE OF THESE PEOPLE GETTING REAL JOBS?

PROBABLY NOT.

I wouldn't let these fools upset you Nicko. I never read any of their stuff for the simple reason that when I first visited their site 2 or 3 years ago, I found it to be the biggest load of drivel I had EVER seen (and that is saying something). They make chimpanzees seem intelectual giants in comparison. So not worth even thinking about, let alone getting upset about.

Don't want Shorey, how he ever got an England cap is beyond me. How M O N ever rated him I'll never know. I played left back and if I was younger I'd be getting my boots down out of the loft !

The two Spaniards- no thanks- neither of them can defend.

My guess is Ball from City and I don't want him either. Do you think we could get Billy Wilson to come out of retirement ? He was better than all of these.

I cant think of many good left backs at the moment, its a problem area for many clubs!!!

Jacobsen was out of position a lot against Sunderland, he's very average.

Now we are talking, the young/new kid on the block in his day.

Now we are talking, the young/new kid on the block in his day.

Great little player, now he could tackle and had a fair bit of pace, nice left foot as well. Warnock reminds me of him in his style of play. It'd be good if we could find another Alan Wright he was handy in spite of being a Jimmy Clitheroe look-a-like.

Two others I rated- Ken Knighton and Andy Burgin.

CHIMBONDA...having his medical...breathing easier on that one...fee around £1.5 million.

WARNOCK...I think that is about to happen too...not sure of fee...would suggest £7 million and rising to £8 million.

LEFT BACK...not getting any confirmation on the guy I thought it was...but still think it is this geezer...because he ticks so many boxes.

Amazingly busy all over the place right now. So many people trying to deals, so little time.

STOP SAYING THAT. WHO DO WE DROP?!?! FOR THE LOVE OF GOD I'M TURNING INTO ABBEY.

* For the record, I too think Gael is our best defender, but Samba is too good to drop, the newbie will be a specialist LB and Nelsen is the captain. So I don't see where he fits in.

Well I know where he would fit in if I was the manager. He would be the first choice left side CB in place of Nelsen. I know Nelsen has been a good player and loyal as well, but he is definitely inferior to Givet in that position as things stand. I just cannot see Nelsen ever getting back to where he was prior to his run of injuries. Sad but there it is. That's life.

Spencey7 why do you bother supporting the club? No matter what Sam does you find a way to knock and moan about it. Did you no appreciate the fine football that was played last night?

"Fine football"?

We clearly have very, VERY different opinions on what that means. Several reports from this very forum acknowledge that we played the long-ball last night - against a League One side in poor form. If you're not prepared to allow your players to adopt a attacking, passing approach in that game...

Hoilett did well, as did Nzonzi. I dare say even Andrews may have gotten pass marks. But they were all playing at the level from whence they came (German 2nd Division, French 2nd Division and League Two, respectively). We know we can't rely on Dunn and yes - Givet looks a great player. Imagine where we'd be without him.

Incase you haven't noticed I'm not the only dissenting voice against Allardyce on this forum - let alone amongst the wider support. His "poor me" attitude, arrogant nature and hideous, outdated tactics are an embarassment to our club. If you don't think like this - fine. But accept that I do.

His transfer dealings have been "peculiar" to say the least. I don't believe he's spent the limited funds available in the proper way, and would suggest he is stark-raving bonkers in failing to acknowledge our desperate need for a central-midfield player. (Not to mention his inability to accept Keith Andrews' glaring deficiencies at this level, which are obvious to each and every Blackburn fan on planet Earth.)

I don't equate "supporting" my club with standing by and watching it being driven into the ground, which is exactly what's happening at the moment. I don't have to swallow the crap being served by Sam Allardyce, and neither do you.
