We won't sell Jacobsen. This is Sam Allardyce not Harry Redknapp!

Yes. Last season taught us a lesson about having plenty of back up in case of injury. Sam has built up a squad of versatile players with cover for every position and that should stand us in good stead. There is a weakness in midfield where I would like to see some class brought in in place of Andrews but we do have Dunny, who is class when fit, plus Emmo with Grella and N'zonzi as back up. So we are not totally bereft of talent there.

Also I would like to see one of the new lads played on the right as I don't think that Diouf is bringing much to the party these days.

Overall I'm fairly happy with the squad when Kalinic settles in and shows us what he can really do.

I think Sam has done a good job with the resources the trustees have allowed him.

NEWSFLASH!!!! ROVERS LINKED TO CENTRAL MIDFIELDER SHOCKER!!!!

http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,12876_5516555,00.html

Benfica midfielder Hassan Yebda is remaining coy over reports linking him with a move to Blackburn Rovers.

It is claimed Rovers are interested in the Algeria international, with Benfica said to be demanding £3.5million for his signature.

Yebda has praised Blackburn boss Sam Allardyce and admits he does not know what the future holds.

The 25-year-old told skysports.com: "I am waiting, I am not aware of things but I know there have been some enquiries.

"We still have five days for the market to close, so let's wait and see.

"Blackburn are a good team with a very well known manager."

Warnock out for £7m plus, with Chimbonda in for £1.5m, Taylor for £2m and this fellow for £3.5m would be immense business (if this Algerian is any good, mind).

McCarthy seems to offer very little at the moment in Sam's system because the strikers are expected to create their own chances...

Ooookkkkkaaaaaayyyyyy....................

He's the only striker we have who can create something out of nothing and create chances for himself. Roberts can bulldoze his way through players, but then he can't score; plus his passing is suspect. McCarthy is a very intelligent footballer, he reads the game well and knows were others are and is very skilful on the ball. he links up well with players around him. He is also a great finisher and the ball sticks to his feet brilliantly. He is without a doubt our best striker. I really think a pairing of him and Kalinic would/will be excellent.

Really? Roberts can recieve the ball two thirds up the pitch and bulldoze his way through thus creating his own chances. McCarthy needs to recieve the ball in the box in order to be in a scoring position. Therefore he does not create his own chances.

When in the last two seasons has McCarthy created something out of nothing?

He is a brilliant finisher but Benni needs supply. He does not have the pace or the power to beat defenders on his own.

Plus his link up play has always been fancy but not actually that productive. He sets up very few chances for people.

Yup totally agree with that, brilliant goal, one of the best I have ever seen at Rovers. So when was that mighty, run, cut inside and out, and finish?

Jan 2007. Which is over two seasons ago. And even in that massive goal scoring season it was an exception. The majority of his goals were from finishing from crosses, cut backs, through balls etc.

As Hughsey says, you need to feed the beast. We aren't particularly good at that at the moment. Someone who can mix it up in the box, pressure the defenders, use pace to get in behind them is far more Sam's cup of tea.

Goal scorer, full stop, in the current system his days are numbered, Matty's replacement (impact 20 min player)

I doubt Benni would work as an impact player, seems to take him 20 minutes to get himself into the game usually!

Wouldn't surprise me at all if Benni went and a midfielder came in.

Getting rid of McCarthy would make a lot of room in the wage bill for a creative player to play as the attacking central midfielder.

How much more evidence do you need that Allardyce has ABSOLUTELY NO INTENTION of bring in a proven central-midfield player? (Far less a creative one.) He's had eight months to plan for this and sort it out but has done nothing. When you rate Keith Andrews as a Premier League player, questions arise.

And yes - Allardyce openly stated in the Man City post-match interview (still on the BBC website) that he was looking to bring in Salgado as we were "desperate for that because we are short of defenders". (Watch it here, around 2:30 into the interview.)

But I can't really blame so many posters here (including nicko) for just assuming that he HAS to be earmarked for centre-midfield - it's the only way the transfer policy would make even the slightest bit of sense.

Hoilett isnt a sam signing though...

Nope, he's not. But will his blind following just shower him with undue credit anyway...?

Arsenal in the FA Cup is the first which springs to mind.

Edit: I see everybody else on the board beat me to it :D

I'm not sure why our opinions of McCarthy v. Roberts need to be so polarised. It is not as though either of these guys is a clear cut above the other these days, is it? Apart from that, I've always rated Benni and wouldn't like to see him go - but considering there is no room for sentimentality in today's game, I'm sure we'll sell him if we get a decent price. I think last season showed us that we need more than three strikers to choose from...strikers are specialists (no centre backs up front, thank you).

weird interview with Sam on SSN just then. Again appeared very down. Asked whether there was any truth in the Taylor link and he said no tho to be fair he answered no for 3 or 4 questions - perhaps keeping cards close to his chest? I hope so...

I see that Newcastle are interested in signing Gareth Bale on loan for the season. Personally having seen him play for Saints quite often, I honestly think he'd be a good addition to our squad if we can sign him on loan terms. He's great going forward, not too bad in defence but under Sam i'd imagine he'd become a lot better and he's got a good engine on him with a fair amount of pace.

I feel sorry for Bale at the moment. He left Saints as a really promising player but he's had problems with injuries at Tottenham which has affected his progression into becoming a top player. He's also been labelled unlucky after never being in a winning team at Tottenham in the league. Hopefully we'll be linked with him because he's a lot better than people think.
