broadsword
Can't disagree there. Chimbonda was relatively cheap. i still don't understand why he went after strikers at all costs before considering other positions when we're desperate for midfielders. Paul
Did Warnock go for 8 mill? I thought it was less? And I can't remember the exact timings, but I thought the board said there was no money left on the wage budget for new signings, but Allardyce persuaded them otherwise. Would he have needed to persuade them if Warnock had already left thereby increasing space on the budget? Who knows what Warnock was on, would he really have been on as much as 40k? Whatever, this transfer really is beginning to stink. I think Allardyce's credibility is on the line here. This is an experienced player, when is he going to be blended in? Think it was £5m Bryan as this is the shortfall in wages we need to make up this season. As for the credibility thing I'd argue Salgado is just another on a long list of players Allardyce has wasted our precious £££s on buying. None of them have proved to be worthwhile to date, with I suppose, the exception of N'zonzi. I wouldn't give Allardyce any credit for signing decent footballers. Bobby G
It is surprising though, Paul, I tend to agree that his transfer record as opposed to his previous tenure in charge of Bolton has been disappointing. Givet does stand out, but other than that, the permanent signings havent turned out to be that eye-catching.
broadsword
In the asset column you'd have: Givet, Chimbonda, N'zonzi, Jacobsen Liability column: Diouf, Salgado, Kalinic, van Heerden Not sure where to put di Santo, he's still learning his trade, but we need a striker who can make an impact now. Even so, his record is as hit as it is miss. That's the transfer balance sheet at the moment, obviously this can change.
Lurid Coat
Not sure where to put di Santo, he's still learning his trade, but we need a striker who can make an impact now. The same should apply to Kalinic, surely
Paul
Givet does stand out, but other than that, the permanent signings havent turned out to be that eye-catching. Yes I agree he does stand out. I tend to forget about him as he fits so well it's as though he's been here for years. That's a good and fair assessment in my view. broadsword
At the moment he's not even learning his trade. If he was deemed good enough to at least play a bit part in most games then I'd give him the benefit of the doubt. However, when he signed Allardyce gave a load of spiel about blending him in slowly. Yet di Santo features in most games. What's the difference? He hasn't looked bad when I've seen him, but at the moment we've paid 6m quid for him and he's not even in the squad. If he's not part of the solution he's part of the problem.
G Somerset Rover
Bryan as you say we need a striker who can make an impact now. That's why when we signed the guy and Allardyce gave the "6 months" spiel I thought he was talking rubbish. We cannot afford our whole budget to be spent on a player who will be ready further down the line. Of course we can't go out and get a proven premiership goalscorer for £6 million, so there is an element of risk, but we needed somebody to come in and hit the ground running which he hasn't done (or the club haven't allowed him to do so). Same with Salgado - I suppose he will come good in the New Year too?!
Backroom Tom Posted December 2, 2009 Backroom Share Posted December 2, 2009 Made one mistake tonight but apart from that a class act. Really think he could do a job in midfield.
Steve Moss
Its beginning to look that those who spent their time slatting Sam's purchases are going to have to eat some crow. It looks like he is truly "the expert".

Bobby G
If he played at right back, what makes you think about him slotting into midfield?

My guess is you are both right on the Warnock fee- £5m rising to £8m Salgado was a revelation last night by all accounts.
Miker
I think Salgado will do well for us. He's still a world class player, just not in his prime and it was always going to take time for him to get used to the league. If Sam decided to be patient with Salgado and Kalinic then he had good reason to do so and if they were as good as people say they are last night, then frankly I'm thankful they have both had to wait for their chance. Come the end of the season, a lot of the critics will be looking pretty silly because they've been seeing a team that's a "work in progress" as a team that's struggling instead and I firmly believe (and have believed from the start of the season) that the club will be in a strong position at the end of the season and not in a relegation struggle as so many believe. Hughesy
Very good performance last night - full of running and seemed really up for it! Another very good signing by Sam and his team......The more games he gets, the more he will slot in with ease. Oooozes Class.

Amo
Love the guy, and he looked so earnest during the penalty shoot-out. I still think he could be our new Savage in midfield.

She loves me, she loves me not.... which is it today who is upon you? Dr Jeckyl or Mr Hyde? Chimbonda and N'Zonzi were superb last night against the likley Champions, whilst Salagado and Kalinic both had strong games. The only guy to really disappoint to date although I have seen little of him is Van Heerden.
Anti-Dingle-Brigade
Salgado looked like a die hard fan in that shootout, he was practically on his knees. Get the feeling he really wants to win things here.
Neil Weaver
Anyone else spot he was getting a right royal boll***ing from Chimbonda before the shoot out last night? I would guess it was for giving away the free kick that Chelsea scored from right at the death.
roversfan1
There were one or two iffy moments defensively from Salgado last night but overall I thought he was brilliant especially going forward and nobody can question his committment especially when tackling / challenging for the ball. His desire to win stands out for me and I thought last night he showed what an asset he is to us. Anyone else spot he was getting a right royal boll***ing from Chimbonda before the shoot out last night? S15
I think it's pretty obvious Allardyce has scooped the best Right Back in the world on a free, thus making Big Sam the messiah. We need to erect a statue of Big Sam and Salgado hand in hand next to Jack.

Don't forget Jacobsen was free too!! Well done Big Sam. I'd like to see more of Salgado, just because of his legendary status (and the amount we're paying him)
