It's like someone said in this topic, Salgado could have stayed at Real Madrid and been an ambassador for the club - but he decided to come here and ply his trade. It's a privilege to have such a great professional at the club and I'm sure it's rubbing off on the younger players.

Just as long as he gets his mates Guti and Raul to join him this summer!!!!!!

Salgado was written off before he came here, at the time I thought we were pissing our money down the drain. Which we did for a while but he's done well recently and hopefully can start like he finishes next season. With reference to his options last summer I believe it was us or spending some time in the middle east for the reason stated in the first sentence.

Guti and Raul, maybe or someone of similar qualities, reading between the lines from one of his latest interviews in this article with regard to Reidy.

"I can advise players from Spain to come here and to enjoy a different league with a good style of life, a good private life for players, much different from Spain.

"You can work easily here at the training ground with no distractions, it is a professional environment.

"Maybe we can sign a player for the next season, I don't know."

We are in need of a good PR person at Rovers, I'm liking Salgado more and more.

Seems like a top bloke. Its seems like forever since someone of any note gave us such credit. He seems to be loving life in Lancs. Who knows, he may even end up on the coaching staff. Perhaps we have learnt our lesson after letting Tugay slip away.

Without wishing to get into an argument with Den about this (again!), he does have a tendency to write young players off based on a few performances. Bale is yet another example of how much a young player can progress in a relatively short space of time.

Sorry to stick the boot in cos Den's a great chap but this made me chuckle as I do agree. Lennon is a big example, written off as being all pace with no end product, and that is not something you can improve in a player apparently. Lennon is still hit and miss at times but he's clearly a much better player that can destroy a team on his own but was bizarrely rejected by many on here when we were linked as a waste of time.

Oohh you bitches. :)

Le Chuck, I haven't written off any youngster after a few performances - without being right. :D

Listen, I started all this originally, when I said that Gally [who many were saying would still come good] wouldn't improve much at the age he was and wouldn't make it at Ewood. He was 22ish at the time, where is he now?

I said pretty much the same thing about Derbyshire. I said that if he wasn't playing regular football by the time was 23 [he was 22 at the time], then he wouldn't make it here either. Where is he now?

I was one of the first to say that Carlos looked too small and too slow - after the Grimsby cup game, when many said he was the bees Knees. Where is he now? I said early on that Danny Simpson wasn't up to it, what happened to him? I said KA wasn't good enough - is he?

Oh, and as for Bale, I said he was suspect defensively, which he is. I made no comment on his attacking abilities, which to be fair have been excellent.

Ermmmmm, where did I get one wrong? :P

What's your assessment of Bale's pace? (cheeky question)

Have you changed your opinion of Kalinic at all? Do you still think he's very poor aerially and holding the ball up? Will he score goals at this level? (serious question)

Quick. ...going forwards. :)

Haven't changed my mind Bellars. Yep, poor in the air and falls over far too easily. Rarely looks like he's in control of things. I don't rate him and two tap ins for all his games to date doesn't show much does it?

Now then, your turn. I've put my tarnished reputation on the line - what's Niko's strengths?

Oh and I've edited my comment on Bale's pace.

I'd say his positioning and workrate are excellent, as is his instinct in the box (in terms of getting into goalscoring positions, which is about the most unteachable thing a striker can have). He brings others into play well too and has a good touch.

His hold up play isn't great but is better than it was at the start of the season - he's undoubtedly not ideally suited to being a lone striker and I doubt he ever will be.

His heading is probably better than you give it credit for. Ironically his header that went in against Wigan was a complete shank but the header which hit the post against Wolves is a better example. Also had one cleared off the line against Brum. I think he'll score his fair share.

Weaknesses are currently his composure - 3 examples spring to mind (last minute against Sunderland, same against Liverpool when he could have rounded Reina, and a miss from close range against Hull at the KC). I wonder whether this will improve with confidence or whether he'll always be a player who misses seemingly easy chances. Hard to say at this point but I won't write him off.

I also don't like that he dives a lot.

I think if he stays in the Prem he'll score goals. Hopefully with us.

That's something else I got castigated for on the Niko thread - daring to suggest early on, that he couldn't play the lone striker. But hey, we all get a bit of stick on here.

For the most part of the season he looked like he might have the awareness to get onto the end of things in the box. I think everyone must agree that for the last - I dunno, 7 or 8 games, he wasn't even doing that. For whatever reason.

I recall that Salgado said he had a year left on his Rover's contract, then was thinking of heading to the MLS for a year or two. I have the distinct impression that he loves playing the game and won't quit until they kick him off some pub team at age 75+.

That being said, I can easily see Salgado converting to coaching as he ages. He has presence, brains, discipline and seems completely dedicated. Unlike some (Ince), I doubt that getting his badges will be an issue as he seems the type that takes pride in working the job.

On the issue of Tugay, has he really slipped away? I read the occassional article that he passes information off to the Rovers, he's appeared at matches this season, and he seems to have a very positive relationship with the club. I think at one point he was working for Hughes at ManC and at another was doing something in Turkey. Is he being serious and working on his badges? If so, I could see him coming back to the Rovers in a decade or two, with some managerial experience under his belt.

Can you imagine a Tugay-Salgado management team for the Rovers? We'd win the league with mere presence. :rover:

Kalinic will come good. We've seen it already. We should keep in mind he's 22, on his own up front, in a strange land. He can't be expected to be a 15+ goal machine out of the gates. Next year or the following he'll start banging them in.

I must say I got all nostalgic watching Gallagher playing for Leicester. He still has great technique. Controls the ball, great passer and takes a great corner-very rarely hits the first defender (unlike Pedersen!) Shame about him, he's sort of halfway between Championship and Premiership ie there's no league for him!

Hey, got an idea, can we teach him how to take a long throw?? :glare:

Havent we scored something like 65% of all our goals from set-pieces this season?

I can remember a fair few Pedersen corners we have scored from....

Since he's taken just about all of them that does not surprise me! Still hits the first defender too often though.
