I wonder what the top 10-20 would look like for the 'lost years' ie 1970-1990. Anything over 20,000 was a big thing for us regulars back then. From memory, we used to get big gates for the Burnley games (Xmas and Easter) in the old Second Division.

Well, i`ve done the business......

Here`s the top 20 attendances at Ewood during the 70s......

v Bolton (26/4/78).................27,835 (div2)

v Bolton (8/11/75).................24,430 (div2)

v Bumley (27/3/78)................24,379 (div2)

v Preston (26/12/74)..............24,007 (div3)

Saw all those games apart from the Hudds and Villa games in 70 and 71.

The Sunderland games were special as they brought thousands down. The amount of coaches that snaked around Ewood on those match days always impressed me as a kid.

Plymouth game.... one of my all time favourite games, covered well in other topics on this board.

Feeling old!

Think thats the game when Bolton went up to the 1st Division, Allardyce and all.

Bolton brought around 20k to Ewood that night.

What were the change of circumstances that led there to be a drop from 24.5k down to 14.7k for the Rovers vs Burnley games from March 78 to April 79 ??? Anyone provide any insight ? Maybe the '79 game was the one that 10k Burnley marched from Accrington and got lost en route ?

In 77-78 we were challenging for promotion to the First Division. Jim Smith had assembled an attacking team but left to join Birmingham City just before this meeting with the Clarets. Burnley won 1-0 and our promotion hopes had all but disappeared at that point.

The 78-79 season was another relegation campaign when we slipped into the Third Division. Burnley won 2-1 but interest in the Rovers was on the wane. The remaining home games that season brought attendances that were well under 10,000.

Whats the bottom 20?

Plymouth in '75 was the 5-2 game. Went 2-0 down to our biggest promotion rivals and missed a pen. Won 5-2.

Did them 5-2 again in King Kenny's first game 16 years later.

Was playing football on Plesi Fields that day. Big promotion game, goal a game men Rafferty and Mariner up top for them. We kept hearing cheers from Ewood in the latter stages of our game and I assumed that we had won by plenty so I enquired from some bloke walking his dog who said that the last score he'd heard was 2-0 to Plymouth! I was mighty glad to hear the true score when I got to the changing rooms I can tell you.

Not sure but I think that may have been when the entire Riverside was condemned by the LCC and closed off.
