Big Fat Sam Posted August 22, 2009 Posted August 22, 2009 BFS, I understand where yo are coming from here but I simply dont see any quality British midfielders who are available, I say Rothen as he has been on trial here and has a wicked left foot and can pass a ball but I really think there will be another one too, who, is anyones guess!! As for the shirts, yes, I do agree, shouldnt sell shirts with names on if the player will be transferred in the August window, should be a refund!! I do not want to see a rovers team devoid of british players. Since british players reach such a premium and cost the same we'll never see any soon. if we're lucky two players come in, if we're robbing the honey pot, it will be one. Hands up who thinks the honey pot??? I've always felt Stevies efforts go un-noticed and judging by peoples reaction most see Givet as our new left back. A defensive one, a slow one and judging on some performances, I'm gonna stretch here and say he's our best centre back (so why play him left back??). Givet will be up against pace week in week out so will sit back. It may free gamst to attack more, but you'll never convince me a man with none of the attributes of a winger should play wide. We will sorely miss Warnock. I would never have signed Salgado if I knew this was the outcome, because sorry if we can afford his salary over two years surely thats enough money for a loan player who can play central midfield. On the subject of the shirts, I'll think I'll just follow the clubs lead and sell them!!!!!!!

Grez Posted August 22, 2009 Posted August 22, 2009 Good manoeuvring by sam on warnock. I would like to see Kranjcar (Or however you spell his name) from pompey. I suspect though that we will be seeing joey barton and alan smith
Brfcrule1 Posted August 22, 2009 Posted August 22, 2009 I have to say very disappointed if true we cannot keep selling our best players then expect to survive in this league. I agree we need a ctrl M/Fielder but not at the expense of another quality first teamer & he was our player of the year last year. If true will be absolutely gutted! & he hasn't even thrown his toys out of the pram. This is a big mistake.
ace Posted August 22, 2009 Posted August 22, 2009 Good manoeuvring by sam on warnock. I would like to see Kranjcar (Or however you spell his name) from pompey. I suspect though that we will be seeing joey barton and alan smith Have great sympathy with the view expressed by Paul..and IF we do take on the lunatic Barton I feel I will be following Derbyshire, Gallagher and Warnock out of Ewood.
imy9 Posted August 22, 2009 Posted August 22, 2009 As I have said previously when everyone is fit I could not see where Warnock would fit into the team. Givet is a far better defensive left back and Warnock is not a good midfield player, so where does that leave us? It leaves us with a player on £40K a week and worth £8 million pounds not providing a great deal to the team. I think Olsson will be a player to watch this season and Salgado can provide cover there too. I am FOR the sale of Warnock as long as we sign a quality central midfield player, we have been crying out for one for years- here is hoping Sam can pull something out of the bag.
RoyRover Posted August 22, 2009 Posted August 22, 2009 can we not have both :/ Most Premiership teams would go for that option. But we are total skinflints, who get no backing from the trustees, who sell their best players for big money, but then only re-invest a fraction of it in bringing in second rate players. I was really excited about the season ahead. Sam had a whole summer to bring in some players and really get the team playing like he wanted. We bought in some exciting players, like Kalinic, Di Santo and Salgado, but now this just makes me feel ill.
I_saw_Batty_score Posted August 22, 2009 Posted August 22, 2009 Don't mind Warnock leaving if the money is right. Whilst he is a hard worker he is prone to mistakes. Don't think the timing is good though. Don't agree the price till after monday nights game when everyone will see how shakey the Villa defense is this season. A good performance by Liverpool could add a million or two to Warnocks value. Quality midfielder though please. I'm afraid it might by Faye - he's a big Sam favourite isn't he and in his last year at Stoke.
Fife Rover Posted August 22, 2009 Posted August 22, 2009 Good manoeuvring by sam on warnock. I would like to see Kranjcar (Or however you spell his name) from pompey. I suspect though that we will be seeing joey barton and alan smith Thanks very much Grez! You have just ruined my day. I was just coming to terms with the losss of Warnock and comforting myself with the hopes of us signing a decent to good attacking midfielder with the cash. Then what happens? You come on with the very antipathy of any football fans dreams; the two worst nightmares that are playing today. I cant even bear to print their names, but you have already done it in your last sentence.
67splitscreen Posted August 22, 2009 Posted August 22, 2009 Great yet another bloke from some other country. I've always liked the fact we've had english players in our team, guess we're purging that this summer. What will this sale take us to a 15 million pound profit in transfers?? Yet another player who can cross is leaving the club, I smell Sam's 451 coming. PS yes I want a refund on both my shirts now, how can you use him for the adverts and then flog him???? Home and Away now have a Villa players name on, great!!!!!! This moves been in the offing for ages. There is a big sign in the club shop above the shirts, warning you of these situations, they will not do it even if a players squad No. changes/is transfed. Should have ha Andrews, safe a houses. No I didn't before you ask.
RovertheHill Posted August 22, 2009 Posted August 22, 2009 Yes but what "quality midfielder" will we get for less than £8M? And if Givet gets injured then it's Olsson...

greco Posted August 22, 2009 Posted August 22, 2009 Yes but what "quality midfielder" will we get for less than £8M? And if Givet gets injured then it's Olsson... exactly my thoughts. Considering we forked out 6 for kalinic, who might be good, but yet unproven, im too wondering, who can be bought for 8 in todays market, with the qualities necessary.
tcj_jones Posted August 22, 2009 Posted August 22, 2009 OMG in a market where Glen Johnson is worth £17m, Lescott £22m and Upson £10m, then the club would absolutely crazy to let a player of Warnock's ability go for so little. We need quality in CM, but not at the expense of our second best player and one of the best LBs in the league outside the top four.

Lescott is a fantastic centre half who Man City want- explains the overinflated price. Johnson is a brilliant right back who is England No 1. Warnock is a liability at left back- only need to look at the first goal we conceded against Man City for that- we need a central midfield player of quality that is what will define our season.
PMT Posted August 22, 2009 Posted August 22, 2009 I wrote one post, pressed the wrong key and lost the text, still at least I vented my anger at this news. Now I'll try to be more considered. I like Stevie Warnock, he's a good footballer, he'll get stuck in when he has to, he's English, he puts in a shift, yes he makes mistakes but he tries hard every match. Steve Warnock is an honest footballer. I can identify with this man. Sadly he's the last in the outfield squad who means anything to me, so I'm unhappy at his transfer to Villa and it raises many questions. Lets look at the midfield. We have four players injured and / or poor, who should have been shipped out ahead of Warnock. The problem is they're injured and well paid. What is the future for these players? Dunn - ravaged by injury and lack of overall fitness. When did we last see a full 90 minutes from him? We can't rely on anything from David again Grella - I've seen one decent performance from him and that was in the same midfield as Dunn. Ho hum. No expectations here Reid - what is it now, two years since he made a contribution to the squad? Not the player's fault so anything Reidy brings to 2009/10 will be a bonus Emerton - I never really liked Bert on the right side of midfield. Now we've signed the son of God to fill the right back slot for two years I suppose we'll be watching Brett run very fast down the flank before cutting inside 15 yards from the touchline. Usually creates a goal a season with this. I truely hope Allardyce / Williams have something lined up and ALL the money (up to £8m is insulting) will be available to solve the midfield problem. If not I shall begin to question John Williams policy and judgement. We cannot continue to sell our best players and replace them with the second-raters we've had to date. The money must go into midfield, but I suspect if any of the above four give hope of returning to the squad before the transfer deadline the cash will go the bank. waggy posted we'd be lucky to get 20 games from Dunn / Grella, I think he meant combined for the season? I'll go further, 20 to 25 games (full 90 minutes) from Dunn / Reid / Grella. I'm constantly asked to appreciate the club's position, I do, I've defended it and I still appreciate the financial reasoning behind the management decisions. This morning I'm bitterly disappointed and moving towards the views expressed by den and a few others over the lack of investment in the team. This is a step too far so the pay off had better be good. Lastly, and this is very important to me, Warnock is the last outfield player with whom I could identify. If I wore a shirt, it would be his name on the back. Other than Samba, who is the only valuable player left, we could sell the squad tomorrow and I wouldn't worry. Please can we have some footballers, real ones, not some bloke we've never heard off and will only see for a couple of seasons. Yesterday I came across a stall selling football and other sports photographs. It was the usual sort of thing but with a few gems hidden away. One photograph was of the Liverpool squad circa 1965 - 66. To my astonishment I could still name 9 of them. Who will be able to do that in 40 years time for any of today's squads? It's a sad state of affairs, when your team is a collection of foreign players earning a living. There's very little left to believe in. I need a hero. I agree Paul. I will be really disappointed if we lose Warnock, as he is the player whom I identify with too. His name would be on the back of my shirt. I think I'll watch the Ashes in compensation, hope England can do the business and accept the inevitable annoucement on Sky!!!
Big Fat Sam Posted August 22, 2009 Posted August 22, 2009 His name would be on the back of my shirt. Do you want to buy one??? Home or away your choice, both have his name on!!!
Billy Castell Posted August 22, 2009 Posted August 22, 2009 Assuming Warnock is off, we need a QUALITY midfielder with a bit of ability in passing and attacking. Smith, Barton, Faye are NOT such players. All of the £8m and wages should be budgeted for such a purpose. Cheapo players like Rothen will not be good enough, and our squad will be weaker.
Paul Posted August 22, 2009 Posted August 22, 2009 Warnock is a liability at left back- only need to look at the first goal we conceded against Man City for that- we need a central midfield player of quality that is what will define our season. This is not the thread to debate it but if this is the criteria then Samba is also a liability as he gave the ball away near the centre circle which set up the whole move.
AggyBlue Posted August 22, 2009 Posted August 22, 2009 This is not the thread to debate it but if this is the criteria then Samba is also a liability as he gave the ball away near the centre circle which set up the whole move. Samba is next summers cash cow
John Posted August 22, 2009 Posted August 22, 2009 Samba is next summers cash cow The rate we are going, we will have no one else to sell off
Paul Posted August 22, 2009 Posted August 22, 2009 Samba is next summers cash cow The only one left unless Kalinic proves to be a world beater in which case he'll be looking to further his career with Champions League football.
Billy Castell Posted August 22, 2009 Posted August 22, 2009 I think we'll be relegated within 5 seasons if we're not careful. Selling 1 top player at a time is fine if you keep buying or bringing on other players on the cheap, turning them into prized assets and then flogging them. However, with our ever shrinking budget it will be harder to do. Soon we may have no=one left to flog and a crap squad.
Amo Posted August 22, 2009 Posted August 22, 2009 I believe the majority of fans will accept sacrificing Warnock if we can purchase a playmaker with the funds. As ever, there's the looming feeling that the manager will be fed scraps only from his master's table. Santa Cruz £15m+ Derbyshire £3m Warnock £4-8m Where does the money go? Our only serious signing was £6m for Kalinic. We paid something like £3-4m for Givet, but surely that was covered from the Villanueva money? And what about our transfer kitty BEFORE these departures? None of it adds up.
Big Fat Sam Posted August 22, 2009 Posted August 22, 2009 The central midfielder if we even sign one, is going to have to be someone special for this. I always saw Warnock as key to our future and a eventual captain. We should build a tesco's at Ewood, cause it feels like one these days.
