Well imagine away. As it is, a single internal drive which can read both Bluray and HD-DVD can be had for about £135. The fact it's in a PC means that at least I'm not constrained by the BDA's archaic Region coding and upgrading the software means I will definately have a profile 2.0 player when again the BDA finally gets it's act together. And it's only been clear since just after Christmas that Bluray would win (if 2% of the global DVD/ HD market is winning) remembering that the formats have been out for nearly 2 years now.

You do realise that the PS3 also dowloads new profiles. The last update, in December 2007 upgraded the PS3 profile to 1.1 with a further upgrade due in summer 2008 that shall take the profile upto 2.0 (ready just in time for Blue Live). The only combined blueray/hd dvd player I can find in that price range is an LG Super Blue and I really hope that you havnt bought that.

Again, assume away. My motherboard has an optical, HDMI and analogue 5.1 outputs, the software (PowerDVD) does the audio decoding of TrueHD over the analogue outputs. I'm taking it that if you are using an optical output then you don't realise that you are actually getting a down mixed Dolby Digital signal to your amp. Dolby TrueHD can only be carried by HDMI 1.3 on external audio equipment.

Yes, I am quite aware that TrueHD cannot be carried in an unaltered form over an optical audio input/output. I was referiing to the flexability that the PS3 offers the end user straight out of the box i.e connection into an off the shelf 'home theatre kit' albeit not in HD sound.

For those who want to take it a step further, the PS3 also offers you a pre fab. HD decoder (as mentioned previously). Again, cattering for all markets.

Me too!

I know five people with Xbox 360's.

All 23 and over who ONLY use them to play games (and Xbox Live)

I don't know anybody with a PS3. (I know one guy who traded his 360 in for a PS3, and then a few months later traded it back)

Funny that.

My aunties, uncles, next door neighbour uses his XBOX as a paperweight.

I said it was a drive in my Media Center PC, in fact they are cheaper now. Link. Yep, I know the PS3 is king of the "standalone" bluray players and will be upgraded, marvellous.

Straight out of the box, after you've bought an HDMI cable.

and why use 1 post when 5 will do!

My ideal console would have the PS3's hardware - Blu Ray, HDMI, built-in wireless, quiet, reliable, big hard disk, no massive power brick

plus the Xbox 360's operating system - Xbox Live, achievements, cross-game chat + invites

and the Xbox 360 controller - bigger, more comfy, analogue stick in the right place.

There you go. You can't possibly argue with that, although there's no chance of getting anything like it (until EA buy Take 2 and dominate everyone with the EA Uber Console)

Back on topic, does anyone know if it's possible to chip a PS3 to make it a multi-region Blue Ray player?

No it isn't. And worse is that it's region coded for standard DVD as well.

I don't think anyone has really worked on it as, as stated above, the final profile for Bluray is 2.0 (PS3 is currently at 1.1). Until the final profile is released in a firmware, people won't want to / shouldn't mess with the PS3 hardware.

Either way, it's a semi moot point as there are loads of region free films from the US. Warner are still region free even after dropping HD-DVD but we need to wait and see what Paramount and Universal do. Hopefully they will stay region free as again they were on HD-DVD. That leaves only Fox and Disney with region coding and I'm sure only the new Fox titles are region coded.

It's still an annoyance factor of having to check every single release. A good rule of thumb is to not even bother checking Disney/Pixar.

It's only a matter of time before some sort of region free software is released.

Anyhoo, I think some PC's can look great as media centre's and aren't as expensive as they used to be. When the TV tuner comes out for PS3, though, it will become my proper media centre, taking over from the old desktop that's whining away currently...

Just downloaded a mammoth update for the ps3. Anyone know what it does yet. Taking ages to install, must be a big one.

By reading other sources, looks like it mainly adds Profile 2.0 to the bluray player which is excellent news.

I'm suprised all the other manufacturers don't slap sony though. They are just bringing out profile 1.1 stand alone players retailing at £400+ and at the same time Sony upgrade the PS3 which costs at least £100 less. The PS3, the only BluRay player to buy.

There must be more rolled into the update as I wouldn't have thought that would have been that big a change.

EDIT - Looks like they have fixed "Stability Issues" whatever they were and in browser streaming amongst other little bits and pieces.

You do know that it tells you what its going to do before you install it dont you?

lol nope. Im too lazy to read through all the infomation and terms etc that come with updates. I shall start now I know though.

What effect does profile 2.0 have on the blue ray player over profile 1.1?

Just bought a PS3 today from Zavvi.

The offer was:

PS3 40GB, GT5, Any game of my choice, Blueray film of my choice & 2 controllers

I chose Call of Duty 4 & Blue Ray DVD called Earth which is absolutely breathtaking in HD.

All for £335 which I thought was a bargain.

The opening movie to GT5 is out of this world. It literally looks like a real life movie.

Gran Turismo 5 - is only £20 in blockbuster for anyone interested.

Is the RSP not £17.99 though?

What I find amazing though is that on the PSN its £25 (yep it got put up yesterday rather than today plus there is a demo of euro 08 - for the first time ever we have a better store update than the yanks - not that it matters with us being able to download from both anyway)

Anyway, I thought as with the Warhawk case that it should be cheaper on the store because you don't have the packaging and instructions to bump up the price.

What gets me further is that this is still a demo after all and for a few more quid I can get GTA (which I have already paid for but you know what I mean). Not that the final Gran Turismo will be a totally different game anyway but I am led to believe that finally there will be car damage too - think I will wait for the real game to come - unless any of you can tell me otherwise.
