Tough break dude - did you try saying that it's actually for the baby? Hand/eye coordination...

Didn't work for me but we agreed a trade off instead - she gets to spend money on pampering herself later on in the year!

Congratulations on thebaby news mate.

As for the PS3, don't be too jealous, it isn't as if there are too many really good games out right now, and the PS2 games I have wont work online yet...

The machine will be cheaper and have better software and hardware by the time you get to order one...

Got mine at 12 midnight last night. Got the Tennis Game and also Call of Dtuy 3. Both games are much improved and im already loving the PS3.

Call of duty is class on a HD TV

Yeah it is, us 360 owners were playing that 3 months ago ;) hehe

Is anyone using the HDMI cable? Is 1080i(HDMI on PS3) any better than 720p(that the 360 uses with component and vga)?

I am using it with the HDMI cable ad the 720p and 1080i on the PS3 are the same as on the 360. From what I can see at the moment the grpahics quality of the games is no different than the 360, Motorstrom is the standout title. What is impressive is the Blue Ray playback, I was watching a movie (X-Men 3) on 1080i and it is truely awesome, the picture quality was better than the HDDVD equivlant on the 360.

At the moment in terms of games it is probably hard to justify the £425 I have paid for the machine, but definately worth it if you are movie fanatc like me because of the blue ray playback. Also around Christmas the games will also improve with the release of Little Bg Planet, Heavenly Sword, Warwark and of course the implementation of "home" in October which is going to take community interaction to a dfferent level.

 That was one of the first things that came out of my mouth. To be fair though, you do have to change your priorities though dont you. However, last night I did have a dream that I pushed the pram into the office and when everyone came to look there was a PS3 in there wearing a little Rovers kit - no joke that was my dream)

How have you made that judgement? Did you have the HD-DVD add on for the 360? I personally think it's impossible to judge as both formats use the same codec VC1 (apart from the original Blu-ray titles which used mpeg2) and therefore are identical for picture quality. The only difference between the two are physical storage size and potentially films may have been encoded at different bit-rates.

From all the reviews I've read, there have been some shockers on Blue-ray and on HD-DVD as well as some real stunning outstanding titles.

I personally had my first taste of HD-DVD the other day and I wasn't overly impressed. Yes, the picture quality is a lot lot better than broadcast but it's not that much of a difference to DVD (to the avergae person anyway). I've watched plenty of downloaded HD tv shows and films and never been stunned by any of them. I was hoping the extra bit-rate of Blu-Ray and HD-DVD would take it to that next level but it just doesn't. I think you need a 60" plus TV to notice the difference. At 42", it's not that special.

The only HD material I have been stunned with so far was Planet Earth on BBCHD. For some strange reason that is coming out on HD-DVD (and Blu-Ray) in the US soon so I may just have to buy that.

I borrowed a friend's HD add to test it on my 360. The films that I watched weren't overly impressive, however the blue ray version of X-Men 3 (only blue ray movie that I have) is stunning, much better than the HD-DVD's that I saw on the 360, I will have to watch a few others to judge the overall quality.

Out of interest, which HD-DVD titles did you watch and where were they from?

I have so far watched Superman Returns (UK) and The Mummy Returns (US) and neither were overly stunning. Very clear in open bright scenes but grainy in darker scenes.

I watched the Chroicles of Narnia on a download (from US satellite) through the 360 and that was stunning. Probably because everything is out in the open in snowy and mountain scenes.

Who gives a toss about bloody films when I've got GoW multiplayer and you PS3 suckas have got....... errr wot exactly??

Not really bothered with HD/Blue-ray as I just download 700MB avis, convert to WMV and stream wirless to my XBOX. Works fine for me. Why would I want to buy a disc for £20-25 when I can watch at cinema or download? How many times can you watch casino royale?

Haha i love these die hard Xbox fans that feel the need to big up the Xbox whenever anything new comes out! How long has the ps3 been out? less than a week, there obviously arent gonna be as many games as Xbox which has been out over a year. A chimp could work that out you idiot.

lol that is v. funny!

I am a bit addicted to GoW but .....

Why the hell would I pay £425 when .............

- I am not really interested in watching blue-ray films? At least I have option to buy/not buy HDDVD on Xbox

- Graphics are certainly no better than Xbox

- On-line gameplay is better on Xbox

- There are more games for Xbox

- PS3 does not have Gears of War!!!!!!!

- I can stream content wirelessly from my PC saving me the trouble of an extra media-centre PC connected to my TV that I always wanted!

Methinks some people still have an anti-microsoft thing going (like sony have never tried to illegally install software from music CDs onto my PC!!)

The 360 is the first console I have had since the SNES!! I am really a PC gamers so the online stuff was a must for me and microsoft will win big in this area no doubt about it. Apparently the PS3 launch has been a bit of a flop - the Wii was much better and that is a cartoon-console! :P

I am not going to get into a "fanboy" debate with you as the 360 is very good machine, but it has been proven over the last 18 months that Microsoft took short cuts in the development process with the number of people whose machines have broken down (check out the offical 360 forums on www.xbox.com)

In relations to your questions above I disagree:

- I am not really interested in watching blue-ray films? At least I have option to buy/not buy HDDVD on Xbox - TRUE, but there are lots of people who are interested in blue ray, but agree you have the option not to with the 360.

- Graphics are certainly no better than Xbox - Compare the launch games of the 360 with the PS3, particularly the first party titles (Motorstorm, Resistance and F1) they streets ahead graphically of the 360 launch titles.

- On-line gameplay is better on Xbox - NO - The online experience is better on the 360 with the live features, the physical act of playing a certain game online is the same on both consoles. PS3 is due to take online functions a step forward with the launch of "home".

- There are more games for Xbox - Yes but it has been out for 18 months.

- PS3 does not have Gears of War!!!!!!! - 360 doesn't have Heavenly Sword, MGS4, Motorstorm, Final Fantasy, God Of War to name a few.

- I can stream content wirelessly from my PC saving me the trouble of an extra media-centre PC connected to my TV that I always wanted! - I'll give you that.

Anyhow in the end the winner is us the gamer, the more competitive Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo are the more we will benefit. Like I said i owned a 360 for a year so and it is a machine with lots of potential but at the moment it is just to damn unreliable with the constant hardware malfunctions.

I saw a PS3 for the 1st time today in Dixons. Very sleek and stylish. Could blend perfectly into any decent tv cabinet. Had a demo running, looked quite impressive but it was a pre prepared video demo, so dont know whether this compares to in game graphics. That jelous Xbox fan seems to have done a runner!

Xbox Elite is due out at the end of this month.

It's is in black and has a 120gb hard drive.

It also includes HDMI port and cables.

HD Player is extra, but still comes in at about the same price as a PS3.

It depends on what you think will be more successful.

Will HD follow on from CD and DVD or will Blu-Ray take over?

We will see.

No I ain't. I'm still here laughing it up! :wstu:

Seriously I don't really care which is "better", I just like my 360.

Don't know about others but I have had no techiee problem, however I do have a criticsm in that is is quite noisy due to fan running so I can see how it might overheat with poor airflow. Enjoy Resistance but don't expect me to be joining you. One console and my PC is enough.

Until this thread I'd never heard of "fanboys" so thanks for the link Cocker, seems like there is a war going on out there. Quite funny really.

Having the benefit of having both machines (as well as a gaming PC but thats irrelevant) I have to say in terms of quality the ps3 beats the 360 hands down. If you put them side by side the 360 looks like a plastic games console, where as the ps3 looks and feels like a proper home entertainment system. Its got some way to catch up with xbox live (the playstation store is very poor in my opinion) but give it a year and with the advent od PS home it will eventually catch up. Having had the benefit of using the 360 and PS3 on a HD tv i'd say the ps3 has the edge...just and thats because of the built in HDMI port.

Do MS really think that bringing out a new console with HDMI now is going to endear them to current owners. I'm going to be extremely annoyed if that happens!

I cant find a wii for love nor money anywhere, but you cant compare that to these machines!

It is approaching a week now that I have had my shiny little toastie maker lookalike, and here is what I am thinking:

Love the sixaxis controllers. I thought the loss of rumble would be a bad thing, but wireless more than makes up for it.

Love the downloads - GTHD Concept in particular and the fact it's free makes it even better. I may plump for Lemmings which seems cheap enough.

Really anticipating Singstar with the new online features.

Got Resistance: Fall of Man, Motorstorm and Call of Duty with it, haven't even opened CoD, had a go on Motorstorm but I can't see what the fuss is about - there were far better games on PS2 to be honest, such as Burnout Revenge. As for R:FoM - WOW! I usually hate 1st person shooters, but this game is very good, so fans of the genre must be creaming...

Just played it online and as long as you play with players of similar ability it is very enjoyable.

A few gripes though. The PS2 emulator is a bit dodgy. Burnout still plays well and you can still go online, but Fifa 07 will not work online. Even offline, the graphics are patchy and the game freezes. A similar experience with Canis Canem Edit too unfortunately. However, Sony are due to rectify these qualms in a future firmware update.

Also disappointed that my PS2 game saves can't be directly transferred to the PS3. Instead I have to get a converter which seems expensive to say I am only going to use it the once...

In fact, now I come to think of it, my only gripes are related to backwards compatability issues, so as a machine, I think the PS3 is great.

Not too bothered by Blu Ray or HD DVD to be honest. It is nice the PS2 will play Blu Ray, but despite owning a PS2 and a PC, I still had a DVD player. Whichever format wins, the player will ens up in ASDA for £19 won't it?

Interesting that you say that. It was announced recently that a Chinese company called Venture (who make the cheap ASDA DVD players) are releasing a HD-DVD player. This should be the start of the cheap Chinese imports whenever it gets released.
