bobsterbrfc Posted September 24, 2009 Author Posted September 24, 2009 When the Iron Lady does pop 'er clogs, the news coverage will make some interesting footage if the Beeb have the stones to send cameras up to Barnsley, Liverpool and other towns and cities where the Saturday night after the passing might be just a bit livelier...

Ozz Posted September 24, 2009 Posted September 24, 2009 Thatcher was responsible for me and many others suffering an extremely tough period during the 1980s, but none more so than the poor @#/?s who were fighting the fight against the evil right wing government during 1984. Thatchers determination to break the Unions, and crush the last remains of British Socialism caused suffering and heartbreak she would never believe possible. Orgreave Documentary-A must see film.
stuwilky Posted September 24, 2009 Posted September 24, 2009 As an American in Arizona, I can tell you that Margaret Thatcher was and is very popular in these parts. You lot also voted for George Bush.
London_Rover Posted September 24, 2009 Posted September 24, 2009 I recently came across this (Thatcher being hon vice president) and I was quite disturbed by it. I’m glad it had nothing to do with Uncle Jack
adopted scouser Posted September 24, 2009 Posted September 24, 2009 Heseltine running question time right now. Terrific performance, made Harriet Harman look like a right kn*b (although that's hardly an achievement)
Steve Moss Posted September 24, 2009 Posted September 24, 2009 You lot also voted for George Bush. Twice. And McCain is our senator. And Goldwater before him. So? This right wing area is building football fields left and right for the kids. We'll have 24 fields concentrated at Rotary Park by the end of the year, doubling the number currently in place. The current expansion will only barely contain the demand. Now if I can only convince (and I am working on it) my local bar to subscribe to Sentanta and the Fox football Channel (obligatory Rupert Murdoch right winger warning), I'd be able to watch Blackburn on the weekends with a beer in hand.
CaliRoverNYC Posted September 25, 2009 Posted September 25, 2009 Thatcher would fall right in line with this... And there are plenty of states further Right than Arizona, I mean McCain isn't exactly Strom Thurmond. I'd also be shocked if more than 10 percent of Americans knew who Thatcher is.
Steve Moss Posted September 25, 2009 Posted September 25, 2009 ^ Is that a legitimate photo? Pretty cool. And Arizona is known for being fairly unpredictable (a very cowboy like trait) politically. Currently, we have more Democrat Representatives in the House than Republican, though that is very likely to change next election.
wilyrover Posted September 25, 2009 Posted September 25, 2009 Thatcher just happened to be visiting Blackburn in 1978, or thereabouts, as I remember. Rovers board invited her to the ground and bestowed the title on her. This was 10 years before JW was involved in the club. She has never been to a single Rovers match. On the other hand, JW made Jack Straw a VP.
jim mk2 Posted September 25, 2009 Posted September 25, 2009 I'd also be shocked if more than 10 percent of Americans knew who Thatcher is. True. I'd also be shocked if more than 10 per cent of Americans know there is a world outside the US.
Neil Weaver Posted September 25, 2009 Posted September 25, 2009 Yep that's a kosher photo of Condi. From about 3 years ago (?). The bloke on the right is Jack Straw, Blackburn MP and at the time was Foreign Secretary. He'd been invited by Rice to Birmingham (Alabama) where I think she's from so he returned the compliment and invited her to Blackburn! By coincidence he got a new job in the Government shortly afterwards .
rebelmswar Posted September 25, 2009 Posted September 25, 2009 Completely off topic I know.. But I just saw a guy in a rovers shirt getting arrested in Pittsburgh at the G20.
OscarRaven Posted September 25, 2009 Posted September 25, 2009 Completely off topic I know.. But I just saw a guy in a rovers shirt getting arrested in Pittsburgh at the G20. Don't be so sure its so off topic, we are defintley missing some of our usual members .. this thread would be like rocket fuel for them normally.

Ozzie - you mean - that was Thatchers Britain - in the seventies.............? Nah mate, couldn't have been.
mellison24 Posted September 25, 2009 Posted September 25, 2009 Hope she ain't a rover. I'll be dancing on her grave along with the rest of my family when she finally chokes on her earl grey!
Roversider Posted September 25, 2009 Posted September 25, 2009 Bill Fox saddled us with the divisive old bat. Mind you she has the same knowledge of football now as she did then. Horrid period as she 'broke the unions' and those who celebrate that should note how it was done. By destroying the manufacturing industries they existed in she effectively removed the heart of the union movement. Bit like saying we need to get rid of those man-eating tigers so lets burn all the forest down. Bit of a pain for everything else that relied on the forest but it did get rid of the tigers. Collateral damage was her contribution. She also started the financial sector dominance of the UK economy (continued by successive governments). Her legacy continues to leave problems in its wake. Wish we could remove her from our club.
berkshireblue Posted September 25, 2009 Posted September 25, 2009 Time is a great memory eraser...but dont remember union dominated days being great myself I remember the 1970's when union dominated strikes brought this country to a standstill and we were in a mass depression with blackouts and powercuts
CrazyIvan Posted September 25, 2009 Posted September 25, 2009 Time is a great memory eraser...but dont remember union dominated days being great myself I remember the 1970's when union dominated strikes brought this country to a standstill and we were in a mass depression with blackouts and powercuts Frankly, the truth lies somewhere in the middle. Thatcher gets blamed for a lot of the ills of society even now, some deserved and some not. The Trade Union movement was slowly killing the country and it needed changing. Unfortunately, breaking that power broke a lot else and people have suffered as a result. Anybody thinking that life under the Labour government before Thatcher has a short memory (Winter of Discontent anyone?) and somewhat selective. Thatchers government got the country back on it's feet but the long term effects of some of the poor choices made by that government are still being felt now. That she is associated with the club is neither here nor there for me. She was a remarkable person though.
Tyrone Shoelaces Posted September 25, 2009 Posted September 25, 2009 Time is a great memory eraser...but dont remember union dominated days being great myself I remember the 1970's when union dominated strikes brought this country to a standstill and we were in a mass depression with blackouts and powercuts Don't remember there being much in the way of manufacturing in Bourton - on - the- Water last I was down there matey, plenty of tea shoppes though. Come to think of it . there's not much manufacturing in my home town now. Wonder why ?
martonrover Posted September 25, 2009 Posted September 25, 2009 Completely off topic I know.. But I just saw a guy in a rovers shirt getting arrested in Pittsburgh at the G20. Maybe he was angry about the effects of the global recession on the Trustees' wallets?
rebelmswar Posted September 25, 2009 Posted September 25, 2009 Maybe he was angry about the effects of the global recession on the Trustees' wallets? You could be right, certain members of this board have been quiet today.
Ozz Posted September 25, 2009 Posted September 25, 2009 Ozzie - you mean - that was Thatchers Britain - in the seventies.............? Nah mate, couldn't have been. Not getting you Den?
den Posted September 26, 2009 Posted September 26, 2009 Not getting you Den? Sarcasm Ozz. Never was very good at it. Thatcher's Britain was superb wasn't it? The police couldn't have been attacking innocent miners, with the backing of the government, could they?
Ozz Posted September 26, 2009 Posted September 26, 2009 "Fatchers blimmin` Brrritain eh! " Sorry Den-bit thick there me.
soul boy Posted September 26, 2009 Posted September 26, 2009 Never mind the union thing, she strangled the working class with the intrest rate running at 22 % slimy old cow.
