Nice to have a Burnley fan who can type with his hands, and not with his nose or feet. If last season is any guide, I think you'd have a season like Hull (good start, then a long crap period as you sink closer to the bottom) or West Brom (play nice football, get in decent positions to score, yet lose 3-0). A great manager and team spirit can only take you so far. You need talent too. It could be exciting like Stoke, or a complete mess. What sort of formation do you play, and how would you describe the general way you play?

Team spirit and togetherness will always take you a long way providing you have the players around you, one of the problems they could have is that they think with the cup run, they are really better than they are for week in week out its a different kettle of fish!!

Team spirit and enthusiasm kept Hull up with their fantastic start to the season. However, as seen when the momentum stalls, the trouble really kicks in and there's nothing left in the locker. Having watched both play off finals, I reluctantly have to conclude that the Burnley team that won their play off final was better than the Hull team.

Fortunately:

1) The standard in both play off finals was a long way from Premier League class.

2) Hull had more resources to spend than Burnley do for improving the team.

3) After last season the promoted teams will not be taken as lightly again. I can't see teams underestimating Burnley the way Stoke and Hull were.

4) Burnley play more like West Brom then Hull, and even less so like Stoke. Trying to outplay many of the teams in this division is not going to work with the quality they have.

I agree with all of that. I watched Hull play the Red Rats 3rd team on the final day and they were truly shocking. No ambition, style, pattern of play, commitment, they had nothing. The tank was completely empty. They just hung on hoping for a result at Villa/ Newcastle. Rovers, poor as we were at the seasons end would have beaten both teams convincingly.

Only Reading of the recent promoted teams have stayed up trying to play good football and look where they are now.

I have been saying since about March that Burnley were a decent side and once they got in the play offs couldn't see who would beat them. For some reason people keep underestimating them as rubbish. Sure, it's a big step up and the chances are with no serious cash to spend by Prem Standards they will struggle but it will be far from a guaranteed 6 points. We couldn't beat them at their place in the cup when they were genuinely gaff.

It is worth keeping in mind that they held Chelsea before winning on penalties. They also beat West Brom and thrashed Spurs. I also felt that last year in the league they handled more direct teams like Sheffield United well and it was the more footballing sides like Swansea that they struggled against. That hardly bodes well for us. Early on in the season I would anticipate they will be a handful for anyone.

Like it or not they start next season on a completely level playing field on the pitch with Rovers for the first time in 8 years. Just because we feel that our playing staff and financial position is more Prem standard don't be fooled into thinking it will be easy. We've bloodied the nose of Man U quite a few times over the last 6 or 7 years when everything on paper suggested otherwise. It could easily happen to us.

Don't get me wrong, they are 2 games that I think and hope we will win. However there is a lot of, dare I say it, arrogance and superiority being spouted around by Rovers fans at the moment and threads like this may well come back to haunt us. We've been beat of enough relegation-fodder teams in our time to know better than taking them for granted.

I'm not being arrogant and I don't think anyone can assume they'll definately win any game against any team in the premiership. However I do think Burnley will struggle for the reasons stated. Hull is a decent benchmark to compair them against. Of course I could be way off and they could be a mega (and unwelcome) surprise but I think the odds are on them struggling.

Oh, and Burnley don't start the season on a level playing field with us - in terms of talent or premiership experience, or even financial clout for that matter - which is saying something. Sure we start on the same number of points and have to play the same teams but it isn't a level playing field. By that logic we're on the same playing field as chelsea or manure.

Incidentally I doubt that under Sam we're the type of team that'll go about underestimating any other team. The team spirit and attitude from the last 3/4 home games showed a committed bunch of players with a strong desire to win.

I wasn't necessarily referring directly to you mate. I also agree that I think they will struggle. It's just all this talk of them getting the lowest points total in the Premiership is rubbish. All this talk of guaranteed 6 points is rubbish. We should beat them judging by our playing staff but football doesn't work that way. It seems like some people are viewing Burnley as a sub-standard Championship side given the chance to compete in the Premiership. They're not. They've got there on merit. They've earned the right to start level with the rest of us. If they win and we draw their first game they are above us.

Burnley scored a lot of goals from long rage, cant see that happening in prem

Does that mean they had a lot of pent up anger when they scored?

They did exceptionally well last season and played good football to boot, Coyle is a good young manager, the problem for them is two fold, first the defences in the premiership are meaner and the strikers are better!!

A problem which didn't stop Stoke at home all season and for the first 18 games didn't stop Hull at all !!

I'll stop droning on now as I hope they get battered every week. I just don't think they're the worst team ever to enter the Prem which some people think.

yes, but Stoke have a game plan totally different to all the other clubs. Burnley don't have, IMO based on the few ocassions I saw them on TV, anything that's going to scare the other sides.

we could scrape survival. Stoke City proved that. Whether we emulate them whilst being on the other side of the tactics spectrum remains to be seen.

But Stoke spent just under £30 million on players to stay up, no chance of us spending anywhere near that.

Our formation tends to be 4-1-4-1. But i think we look better playing 4-4-2 when Thommo plays up top.

I see your aiming high, modelling yourselves on Stoke City and scraping survival...

Your confidence is rapidly declining, I find that comical.

I don't think any real Rovers fan believes there is ever an easy game in the Prem, We must be confident as we ARE a superior side to the dingles, we have a wealth of experience compared to them and we must approach the games believing we can win them. Every game in the top flight is a tough game.

The dingles had weeks and weeks to prepare for one off games against top flight teams last season, They beat West Brom, that's no mean feat, West Brom were concentrating more on a relegation dog fight. Credit where credit is due, they had a very good cup run but they will not be able to keep that going week in week out in the top flight.

Saying the dingles start on a level playing field is rubbish. Do we start on a level playing field as Man Utd, Chelsea, Arsenal & Liverpool? No. Aston Villa and Man City? No. Fulham, Pompey, Wigan & Bolton? Yes. The dingles start on a level playing field as Wolves and Brum. All favourites to be relegated and the bookies have them at favourites for a reason.

The 'lowest points total' and 'guaranteed 6 points' is banter, putting down the local rivals and wishful thinking. It is what Rovers fans want. Come on Hasta, let us have a little fun.

We all understand what may happen as the season goes on, and I for one way before the season starts am not going to start thinking about what happens if the dingles win the first game and we draw. I couldn't give a dam. If the dingles were above by 10 points or so towards the back end of Jan that would really concern me. However, I'm not too sure that will happen.

Let's have the banter and think positive.

Aye, he's right. To be honest, the league campaign, the promotion to the Premier League, the financial security and first top flight football in 34 years.. that was a minor side issue for us to be fitted around our cup game against West Brom.

The league gave us a 4 week fixture window just to play that game.

You're mistaking last this season with this season. Did Charlton's years as an 'established' top flight club help them one bit when they went down. Or Southampton's? Or Coventry's? It only matters what you do next season.

Come on, Sam. Not even you can be that thick. Surely you know that for a small team (and I include the Rovers in that) there's no security in the prem.

4 weeks is never long enough to prepare for a game aginst West Brom is it, not when you dont have 3 or 4 games against Premiership opposition to plan for too. It must be much harder planning for games against Preston, QPR & Barnsley running up to a big cup game.

You're mistaking last this season with this season. Did Charlton's years as an 'established' top flight club help them one bit when they went down. Or Southampton's? Or Coventry's? It only matters what you do next season.

Charlton's downfall was down to the managerial changes that were made, just like Ince's appointment nearly resulted in the same for us last season.

What I am getting at is that each of your cup games last season was a 'cup final' to you, and as I said credit where credit is due, it's good for football when a lower league side knock's out a top flight side.

We now have a proven Premiership manager, with a proven Premiership squad. The future is bright for us.

If you don't like the banter and don't like Rovers fans knocking your club I suggest that you go back to your own supporters messageboard and waffle garbage with the rest of the claret monkeys.

At this point I'd like to offer a word of caution for the clampetts.

Even by their own supporters admission Burnley played above their recognised potential last season, peaked at the right time and they played an attractive brand of football to do it. All credit must go to the management, however those are these major warning signs for them.

The current set of players cannot be expected to play any better imo and so the level of their performances and results cannot continue to improve. They are not a modern day Wimbledon like Stoke City so if they try to 'out football' Prem teams without a huge investment on the pitch they will get murdered. If they end up as the Prem "patsy's" then their confidence will quickly evaporate and they will quite likely implode as a team all the way back to the Championship with enough money to keep the club debt free for the immediate future. Alternatively they might foolishly try to spend their way out of trouble! That would be absolutely disastrous. The knuckle draggers need to take note of the tale of Icarus and Daedalus!

On a side issue I'm absolutely certain sure that Messrs Kilby and Flood will be looking for a 'draw' too whilst the going is good. Flood's business empire from the smoke signals is in deep sh1t. I'd wager that the return on their personal investment will be first out of the Claret pot .......... just as soon as Sky dump their load on em.

From that link

"For many Burnley fans, the biggest move of the summer might be the one that didn't happen - manager Owen Coyle didn't move to Celtic. But if his team – the smallest club ever to hit the Premier League – are to survive more than one season, then they will need reinforcements."[/i]

What does the word 'smallest' mean in this context? Their combined average height perhaps? Weight? I'd guess it probably means the size of the town itself........ which is completely unrelated to the hinterland of potential support for the club! Why do the media continually support this myth about Burnley's support? Maybe we need to stand outside their turnstiles and conduct a postcode survey of the supporters to nail the truth.
