deryck guyler's spoon Posted June 25, 2009 Posted June 25, 2009 Indeed. Typical half-arsed reporting. Everyone knows Man Utd are our main rivals now. Which would explain why you're always on here. Isn't it about time you sorted yourself out with a girlfriend/some livestock btw?
longsiders1882 Posted June 25, 2009 Posted June 25, 2009 Still waiting for any sort of explanation? Don't tell me this is firmed up by David Coleman and Kenneth Wolstenholme Not something that can be explained. In all sorts of areas of life people, places, individuals and entities become known as being a certain way and the origins become lost in time. In business it is known as 'brand'. During our period in the top flight we were known as a team that played 'good' football and had a conveyor belt producing talent. For the media we stopped to exist in about 1974 when we dropped out of the top flight - even more so since football really began in 92 (well thats what the media would have us believe these days). Hence all people in the media know of us is what they heard from back in the day and/or last season under Coyle (thank god we were not on their radar when we were playing Cotterball). Rovers on the other hand only came into existence for these people when time threw up a combination of Jack Walker and 1992. Hence you are viewed from this perspective by the media, almost as one of the noveau riche who brought nothing to football before this. They also tend to remember your more aggresive teams and judge you accordingly. For the record I think this is unfair and untrue but I don't set the media agenda. Is either picture fair? Of course not. It is simply another example of lazy journalism allied with a media stance where football does not exist north of the gap unless it is being played by a team from Manchester or Liverpool. You will understand better than I do that today the media have a nice warm fuzzy feeling about 'little old Burnley', David to the Premier League Goliaths. A few months into the season as we struggle to aclimatise this will change to pity and condescension, so I would not worry yourselves to much - we will soon drop from the media spotlight.
Lurid Coat Posted June 25, 2009 Posted June 25, 2009 Got to give longsiders props for that post. Good one.
mhead Posted June 25, 2009 Posted June 25, 2009 "props" ...???....for drying clothing outside or maybe short for prophylactics -now that is what I would like to see!

You're never going to forgive Jack Walker are you - go admit it, you hate him hence the JIB jibes.

Nothing but admiration for Jack Walker and what he did for his club. Of course it hurt but time is showing that he not only invested heavily but was also astute enough to build an infrastructure that could ultimately be self sustaining.

The boast 'Burnley.... the team of the 70's' became a bit of a p1ss take by the mid end of that decade didn't it?

Burnley - Great club steeped in history and a great football tradition. Exactly what I thought, complete and utter b****x then
SamDingle Posted June 25, 2009 Posted June 25, 2009 Burnley - Great club steeped in history and a great football tradition. We've been here since 1882, if we don't have history, not many clubs do. Accrington Stanley have history. Exeter City have history. MK Dons have history, just not much of it yet. A great football tradition - well, we've always played football, good and bad. Thinking about it, this bit doesn't actually mean anything. I'm not even sure I've ever heard it before Gav spouted it. The only bit up for debate is the 'great club' bit. I and my fellow clarets will always believe it is. You and your illiterate chums on here will always disagree. The end.

(champions, fa cup and league cups) they had a few great players in history but spent far less time in the top flight of english football than rovers. Rovers have been here since 1875, and have won 10 major trophies. (6 fa cups, 3 leagues and 1 league cup). It doesnt matter when they were won, they were won and go on a clubs roll of honor. Again, throughout time we have had some wonderful players too. Rovers have the upper hand in derby head to heads too. To end all arguments- both clubs have done remarkable well throughout time, its just one has done a lot better than the other.
yorkyclaret Posted June 25, 2009 Posted June 25, 2009 Now you know how lucky you are to be considered fit to be our rivals.
BlueWhiteDynamite Posted June 25, 2009 Posted June 25, 2009 Couldnt see it whilst quickly looking but have Burnley got a new badge ? http://www.skysports.com/football/team/0,19734,11708,00.html
deryck guyler's spoon Posted June 25, 2009 Posted June 25, 2009 Now you know how lucky you are to be considered fit to be our rivals. I've always enjoyed the rivalry with Burnley although I would have quite happily danced on your grave in '86. I was never one for this Utd stuff in the mid 90's. There's no fun in Manyoo. None what so ever.

Really, I think after a day or two celebrating you would have missed us, think I would had it been the other way round anyway. It has been said that the first phone call, with congratulations, after the game came from BRFC.

I remember being gutted when you beat a select Old Etonians XI to win your sixteenth consecutive FA Cup in 1704.
braddock Posted June 25, 2009 Posted June 25, 2009 Quality! I remember being gutted when you beat a select Old Etonians XI to win your sixteenth consecutive FA Cup in 1704. ok fine, let's discount everything pre premiership if we must oh dear, still lagging behind aren't you
longsiders1882 Posted June 25, 2009 Posted June 25, 2009 ok fine, let's discount everything pre premiership if we must oh dear, still lagging behind aren't you Maybe just pre the 20th century?
unluckymorton Posted June 25, 2009 Posted June 25, 2009 Quality! I remember being gutted when you beat a select Old Etonians XI to win your sixteenth consecutive FA Cup in 1704. And your last major trophy was won against who and when? (the play off final does not count as a major trophy).

yorkyclaret Posted June 25, 2009 Posted June 25, 2009 And your last major trophy was won against who and when? (the play off final does not count as a major trophy). Guess that would be the 59/60 Division 1 Champiomnship (when it WAS division 1) Won at the last game away to Man. City, but as it's a league not really won againnst any one team. That's why we have the retro style shirts and badge for next season, the 50TH anniversarry. Since then we have won Div 2, Div 3 and Div 4 also the Charity Shield and the anglo Scotish cup. F.A. Youth Cup as well
