American Posted July 30, 2009 Posted July 30, 2009 Now we have the PL money we will be able to pay off debts, and sort out our club so we can build for the future. This promotion will do wonders for our club, even if we struggle and go down we have the para payments and the manager to come straight back up. I think the season you had last year, even without the promotion at the end, shows how exciting it can be to support a lower league club - 2 good cup runs, including some good away days, a trip to Wembley. I actually envy the season you had as a supporter (except the whole supporting Burnley part of it.) I'm betting you have better away followings against the bigger clubs - I know I wasn't willing to spend 48 quid for Chelsea last season - right down the road, knowing I could go this season instead, when we at least might put up a fight. Playing the big clubs year after year has gotten us cynical in some ways.

FourLaneBlue Posted July 30, 2009 Posted July 30, 2009 Trucking hell you must be one if not the oldest supporter on here, using a computer as well, hope for the young un's yet. I think Fife Rover once said his first game was before that. There is also Bazza and Al who have been going for many years. Some others as well. Quite a few old schoolers on this board. Wonder who on this board can claim to have been to the earliest game?
mhead Posted July 30, 2009 Posted July 30, 2009 I am sure Jim Mk2 saw the great Bob Crompton play. I only saw Tom Finney and Stan Matthews play(of course cannot remember a single thing about it!) Now what was this thread about?
Claytons Left Boot Posted July 30, 2009 Posted July 30, 2009 Quite a few old schoolers on this board. Wonder who on this board can claim to have been to the earliest game? I was at the Glossop North End home game on 15 November 1893. My mum wouldn't let me watch the second half. We won 7-4 and it was snowing. Edward Higginbottom scored a hat trick and the ball was a case and bladder. See, I was there.

Now what was this thread about? Entirely appropriate for Burnley's reappearance in the top flight to be discussing the 1950s and start of the '60s. After all Rovers v Burnley this season will be the first top flight meeting for 43 years.

Ray-Von Posted July 30, 2009 Posted July 30, 2009 Amen brother, the worst day I can ever remember supporting Blackburn Rovers Must say also that the FA Cup defeat by Brentford at home also came close for some reason? Think it was 5th round at home, in the days when making the 6th round would have brought 20k to Ewood instead of the usual 7 - 8k. How times have changed, I'm moaning about not spending 9 million on a striker We played Brentford the same season as the Palace defeat. Gary F***** Blissett. They drew Liverpool away in the QF and got stuffed 4 or 5 nil.
FourLaneBlue Posted July 30, 2009 Posted July 30, 2009 I think the season you had last year, even without the promotion at the end, shows how exciting it can be to support a lower league club - 2 good cup runs, including some good away days, a trip to Wembley. I actually envy the season you had as a supporter (except the whole supporting Burnley part of it.) The 2000/2001 promotion season was one of the best times I have had supporting Rovers. Not only promotion but a decent cup run too...quarter final defeat away to Arsenal in the FA Cup. During the 80s it was actually a great time to be a Rovers fan. We were far better than Burnley(who were at their lowest point), Blackpool, Bolton and Preston who all had spells in the bottom league so we had local bragging rights. Unfortunately we didn't have many local derbies other than when Man City were bobbing up and down. Despite that some of the away games had huge followings from Rovers fans. Games against Stoke, Carlisle, the Yorkshire clubs, Villa etc could see us taking as many fans as we got for home games. It seemed strange but for some reason certain games took on "must-see" status and loads ended up going down in vans with a crate to sup for the journey down. They were not necessarily against big clubs or all that local or even particularly important. The highlights for me after I started going Rovers at the age of 8 until our promotion were... 1985/86 - Last game win against Grimsby to save ourselves from relegation. We played the game knowing we needed a win to keep us up...think the others had already played. 3-0 at Ewood IIRC. 1986/87 - My first full season. Struggling up to Xmas but after sacking Bobby Saxton (later to re-emerge as Peter Reid's assistant at Sunderland I think) and bringing in Don Mackay we looked a decent outfit. Topped off with a win at Wembley over top flight Charlton...we took about 3 times the number of fans they did even though they were just down the road...Probably still my best day as a Rovers fan. Later successes were great but they do say you always remember the first time! 1987/88 - What seemed to going to be one of our best ever seasons but ruined at the end. Archibald. Ardiles. At Ewood! 21 match unbeaten league run...our longest ever! How we blew it near the end to finish in the play-offs I still don't know. We also went to Wembley again for some bizarre 15 minute game or something against Villa which we lost on penalties. 1988/89 - Loss to Palace at Selhurt in the play-off final. Awful refeering. Think they changed the final to a Wembley one-off the year later. We would have had a fairer chance there. The Selhurst Park game should have been annulled...their fans were all on the touchlines threatening our players etc IIRC. Then of course along came Jack and it all changed. The only thing we missed out on was local derbies in those years. However it was a very different experience in the eighties...there would have been major trouble every single time we played Burnley or Preston or Bolton. All had big elements in their support as did we. Being a Rovers supporter in the second division was great at many times. I would not swap our Prem status for being in a lower league but being a fan of a lower league club can be just as exciting (at times more) than being in the Prem. Anyway...sorry for going off-topic! Back to slagging each other off!
Claytons Left Boot Posted July 30, 2009 Posted July 30, 2009 Game set and match = CLB And the secret to young looking skin is? Drinking Thwaites Smooth at any/every opportunity..........oh and Camay soap.

Excellent post and agree with this We have seen some awful past performances and depressing away days and concur on Palace. One that sticks to mind for me also is a 2-0 defeat at Port Vale after they had already been relegated to the old Div 3 - can't remember which season and for some reason I seem to think it was a Friday night (could be wrong on that bit though). The Crewe game was unbelievable if not frustrating for the amount of gilt edged chances we had
berkshireblue Posted July 30, 2009 Posted July 30, 2009 Back on topic, but carlisle( fan killed ) and bury away to wim promotion were great followings I have it on good authroity from my lawyer friend that a key scumley shareholder's main company is in dire financial straits and there will be consequences for them...
cletus Posted July 30, 2009 Posted July 30, 2009 Does anybody know if Kilby is still involved with Bumley? I saw a big silver bentley-type car up billinge today with a reg plate K1LBY. I`m not sure whether it was him, but i gave him the finger.....just incase it was ....I also saw a hugely obese dingle in a dingle shirt waddling out of the Royal Blackburn Hospital today (with his mum) ......he got the same treatment.

Yep. That was Barry Kilby's car. He is still well involved with Burnley. By the way my first match was in 1948. All I can remember is a winger called Jackie Wharton. He was my hero at the time.

This last part got me thinking, are we missing a trick here? So, correct me if I'm wrong but if you're a dingle there's a good chance you could be born and die in your beloved Blackburn? Must be some songs in this...

Top marks Cletus. Bravely 'flipping the bird' to a family visiting someone in hospital. That's what football rivalry is all about I guess. Re. Kilby, he's still our chairman and saviour. Good old Agent Kilby eh?

thenodrog Posted July 31, 2009 Posted July 31, 2009 All that glisters is not gold http://www.lancashiretelegraph.co.uk/sport...collapsed_firm/ Now that the financial tide has turned and a plethora of 2bob millionaires like Burnleys answer to Jack Walker Brendan Flood are now ha'penny ones it surely serves as a reminder of the lucky let off we had with Dan Williams and his ambitions to own a Prem club based on corrugated shacks in Africa. Rothschilds and the trust will have earned their fees and more I'd wager.

The Prof. Posted July 31, 2009 Posted July 31, 2009 Haahahhahaahahahah! Ideal replacements for the Toon! We needed these jokers to fill the 'incredulous gap' £3m quid "but we won't miss it!. Haha! I bet. They'll be watering the tea down a half time. Was it Flood you signed all that worthless land over to in Padham? Or was that Ingleby. You've been had.

Must be some songs in this... You are wrong. In fact Burnley is to be developed as the main maternity unit - so Rovers fans will be born in Burnley. Are you sure Kilby lives in Blackburn? I was fairly sure it was Preston way he lived. As for the loan, did you read the article? The loan was only due for repayment IF/WHEN we got promoted. Had we not been then the loan would not have been due for repayment. That said we would have had other financial problems thugh these would have been covered by player sales (notably McCann, Paterson and Eagles I suspect) which would have ripped the squad apart but would have ensured our financial stability. It actually looks like they had the plan right, buy young players that will increment in value. It is still a gamble but very much hedges your bets. Also a gamble that gave us our amazing last season. Looking forward to the prem but not sure (after the novelty has worn off) it will ever provide the exciting kind of season we had last year.

I think it's a joke having the maternity unit there, as is having the A&E for B*rnley in Blackburn. My kids won't be born in B*rnley, I would rather my partner have a home birth.
SamDingle Posted July 31, 2009 Posted July 31, 2009 Yes Sam, you can count your lucky stars.Just like '87 you scrape through on a wing and a prayer......your clubs 'luck' will run out one day!!! You know, you might be right there. The 'must win' games of recent times, as opposed to 'would like to win' games in derbies etc, we have won. Orient in 87, Plymouth in 98 and Wembley in 2009. All played against a backdrop of impending financial disaster. If we'd lost any of those, god knows where we'd have ended up. Our next home game wouldn't be Man Utd anyway. Hopefully our luck will hold next season when we need to clinch the Champions League spot on the final day.
