Amo Posted October 3, 2009 Author Posted October 3, 2009 I didn't say he was good at it, I just said he was better than Benni would be (which is utterly appalling!). Obviously Di Santo seems a massive improvement over Roberts which is a bloody relief. I think at least with Benni there's the chance he'll pull something out of the bag and won't scuff his one and only chance straight at the keeper.

Tony Diamond Inc Posted October 3, 2009 Posted October 3, 2009 He had two qualities- strength and pace, and it would appear the latter is deserting him!
joey_big_nose Posted October 4, 2009 Posted October 4, 2009 I think at least with Benni there's the chance he'll pull something out of the bag and won't scuff his one and only chance straight at the keeper. Benni wouldn't even get a chance, the defenders would beat him in the air, push him over, do him for pace. Honestly it is hard for me to think of a striker less suited to playing one up than McCarthy.
Presty On Tour Posted October 4, 2009 Posted October 4, 2009 Didn't Benni play as the lone striker in the Porto side that won the European Cup? Admittedly he's aged since then and had some excellent midfielders backing him up but he's knows how to play the position at the top level and was very successful. As for Jase, he wouldn't be in my Rovers team if I was picking the side. His shooting is terrible for a striker which mainly consists of "toe pokes" and the open goal he missed against Sunderland last season when we were in the ###### was unforgivable. He gives away possession by conceding free kicks all the time and his control of the football is shocking for a premiership footballer. He's a nice bloke off the field but strikers are mainly remembered for their goal to game ratio as it's their main objective in their job criteria.
cletus Posted October 4, 2009 Posted October 4, 2009 Roberts is a nice guy off the field & tries his hardest on the pitch, but can be so frustrating to watch. Watching him turn with the ball is like watching a fat bird trying to get into a small car carrying 2 KFC family buckets whilst trying to take a slurp of her milkshake
Mike Graham Posted October 4, 2009 Posted October 4, 2009 He is a nice guy but he plays like a burnley fan trying to count to 10...he never completes the action.
thenodrog Posted October 4, 2009 Posted October 4, 2009 He had two qualities- strength and pace, and it would appear the latter is deserting him! Correct and a point that I have made previously. Also he is so musclebound that a full 90 mins is really beyond his stamina level. However imo JR can still be mighty effective coming on as a sub with 25 mins or so to go. Most centre halves hate the introduction of that type of player when the match has settled down into a nice comfortable pattern for them. Bit psychological but if he could be mentally convinced that being sub is not a slight on his ability but rather that the role of specialist super sub is the really key position in the entire team he could be a real asset.
Al Posted October 4, 2009 Posted October 4, 2009 Sorry but McCarthy is so slow and lazy these days that it's like playing with 10 men. (9 if Andrews is in the same side).
philipl Posted October 4, 2009 Posted October 4, 2009 Can we mark JR's absence from the Rovers team by unpinning this thread please?
Exiled_Rover Posted October 4, 2009 Posted October 4, 2009 Would you rather a real trier who 9.99/10 times will fluff his golden opportunity? Or a casual player who can find the back of the net? Joey - Since when can Roberts function as a lone striker? Against a miserable Wolves side who are so bad they lost at home to Pompey today? Di Santo showed Roberts what playing the lone striker is all about. I think he's ######, I'm just stating why in a one up front system he gets chosen before McCarthy.

He was a sub in the final anyway. 2) He played against European defenders who are nowhere near as physical as English defenders. Benni struggles with the physical side of the game. If he is on his own looking to retain the ball even the most average of Preniership defenders will eat him alive jsut through physical presence. 3) He must weigh two stone more than he did five years ago. And that is not muscle.
Hughesy Posted October 5, 2009 Posted October 5, 2009 Can we mark JR's absence from the Rovers team by unpinning this thread please? Yes please - dont get why this is pinned at all.
brfcs5359 Posted October 5, 2009 Posted October 5, 2009 Jason gets trams relegated. He is picked to score and misses them, conceding te most important aspect of any team. Ball in net. In stitches about the fat bird in small car above!!! LMAO
Shabani Posted October 29, 2009 Posted October 29, 2009 Roberts should be forced to watch McCarthy's goal from the Pboro game over and over and over until it is stuck into his head how to finish when one on one
thenodrog Posted October 30, 2009 Posted October 30, 2009 Roberts should be forced to watch McCarthy's goal from the Pboro game over and over and over until it is stuck into his head how to finish when one on one Trick is don't think about it. Benny won't do, it's as easy as falling off a log to him. Like hitting a golf ball, the more relaxed you are the farther and straighter the ball goes. In his own mind Roberts has missed before he shoots, as can be borne out by the amount of chances he misses being related to the amount of time he has to think. His best goal last year was away to Fulham which was a superb snap shot on the turn when he never had time to even look at the keeper.
