RibbleValleyRover Posted January 20, 2010 Posted January 20, 2010 I'm a big Samba fan, when he is fit and in form he is our best defender. But i can't deny he has been poor in recent weeks, whether that's down to wanting out, small tactical reasons, or something else who knows? I'm not at the point where i want us to sell him, but he needs to snap out of it.

If not the villa player was one on one with Robinson. Samba tried and failed in that tackle.
LeChuck Posted January 20, 2010 Posted January 20, 2010 quite frankly idoitic! I've thought for a while that Samba has been a liability. I should have probably qualified it by saying 'if we can still get a big fee'. Anything from £5 million upwards and I'd be happy for him to go. Lets be honest, Samba had to try to make that tackle - sadly it didn'y come off - but he had to try to get the ball. If not the villa player was one on one with Robinson. Samba tried and failed in that tackle. He didn't have to try going through the back of the player. Even if Agbonlahor scored (he's not the best at one on ones so it's not a given) we'd still have a chance at coming back with eleven men.
Backroom Tom Posted January 20, 2010 Backroom Posted January 20, 2010 Anything under £10m I'd be disappointed with considering his age. I think he is more use to us as a Rovers player than as a cheque that Sam would see half of though

I think the three games on the sidelines will do him good and he'll come back a better player.
Torgeir Posted January 20, 2010 Posted January 20, 2010 I haven't seen the tackle so I won't comment on today's sending off. But he was excellent on Saturday along with Nelsen and also grabbed a vital goal. How easily we forget...
Fylde Coast Fan Posted January 20, 2010 Posted January 20, 2010 I've always said Samba is overrated by most Rovers fans. He's got his positives - he's huge, obviously, he's a real threat on set pieces and he's very good at man marking players who lack that extra yard of pace, but I question his decision making and Nelsen seems to forever be screaming instructions at him. If you could put Nelsen's footballing brain into Samba's body you'd have one of the best centre backs in the world.
joey_big_nose Posted January 20, 2010 Posted January 20, 2010 Top of the shopping list: REPLACE SAMBA Don't be daft. He is having a dip in form but still over the season our best defender. Six weeks ago he looked like one of the best centrebacks in the division. Massive player for us both literally and metaphorically. If you took him out of the back who would we have with pace? Will also get better as he ages. edit - To my mind the only signings we need to really think about is a top class midfielder and, as a lesser priority, a left back.
magicalmortensleftpeg Posted January 20, 2010 Posted January 20, 2010 He is one of our most effective players at set pieces at both ends of the pitch. Be madness to let him go. If he had made that tackle he'd have been a hero. Some people need to get a grip.
Paul Mellelieu Posted January 20, 2010 Posted January 20, 2010 Samba is the first name on the team sheet. All defenders make mistakes from time to time and have dips in form. Few dominate in the air, and have the pace that Samba posseses.
onlyoneDuff Posted January 20, 2010 Posted January 20, 2010 sell Samba but keep Nelsen...you must be mad
Miker Posted January 20, 2010 Posted January 20, 2010 Samba is a goal scoring defender, who dominates in the air and is the only defender with any sort of pace. Selling him would be daft, good thing the fans aren't in charge of the club.
Hughesy Posted January 20, 2010 Posted January 20, 2010 SELL SAMBA?? FFS iv heard it all now - our best defender, possibly our best player and 1 mistake and he should be sold? Im sorry but there has been many a game where Samba has saved our asses and our other defenders..... People seriously under-estimate the importance of Samba to our team.....Nelsen & Givet would go before Samba for me! Samba is the first name on the team sheet. All defenders make mistakes from time to time and have dips in form. Few dominate in the air, and have the pace that Samba posseses. Spot on
Blue n White Rover Posted January 20, 2010 Posted January 20, 2010 He has looked shaky recently but after he went we really did miss his height and that little bit of pace he has. He would have cleared the corner which led to their 3rd goal, and maybe would've stopped Ashley Young for the last goal. We look less dangerous on set plays as well when he isn't around. His height is a major factor in him being one of our better players.
Guest andrewpickup Posted January 21, 2010 Posted January 21, 2010 He has been shaky of late but I would not swap him for any other centre half in the cup semis especially that hapless potato c##t dunn
JAL Posted January 21, 2010 Posted January 21, 2010 Getting back to forwards, could Rovers not pull the Croatian forward out of Bolton to partner Nikola. Is he not on loan with a £1.4m end of season price ,would have thought this would represent good value and withing Rovers budget.

Cant see us getting him now - Playing regulary at bolton so not likely that he will become available again

If you could put Nelsen's footballing brain into Samba's body you'd have one of the best centre backs in the world. Actually, Nelsen is more prone to academic mistakes than people credit. His positioning for Villa's goal at Ewood was shocking, he just let Milner drift by when he was the clearest threat. Samba is at this moment our most valuable asset, and if we sold him for less than ten million it would put me in a rage for days. Yes, his form has dipped lately, but jeez, am I the only one noticing that he looks TIRED?! He had swine flu and has played every game since recovering, but most importantly, we play him at BOTH ends of the pitch! He has to leg it from one side to the other, and it was very clear to me against Sunderland that this tactic was slowing his legs. Like someone else said, I think three games out will do him the world of good. He was unlucky with his challenge, doesn't deserve to be banned for three matches for it. Ref had to follow the letter of the law though.
Steve Moss Posted January 21, 2010 Author Posted January 21, 2010 Holden still a possibility with Bolton. http://www.clicklancashire.com/sport/bolton-wanderers-fc/125044-bolton-wanderers-deal-for-houston-dynamo-midfielder-stuart-holden-still-on.html
