[Archived] Sam's January Targets

Agree with Theno on Samba, if things get desperate then Samba can go upfront and cause problems for other teams. The club need to step back and think about if Beattie is really what we need.

It's about time the club formed a proper policy with regards to signing and renewing the contracts of older players. Signing Beattie would be another drain on our resources to go along with with Roberts, Grella, Nelsen and Diouf.

I hope JW and Sam see this and look elsewhere...

I don't get the whole "there's no other option talk" - of course there is! It's not our job to mention players on here the club should sign, we have a scouting network which should have witnessed hundreds of decent strikers that could potentially do a job for a similar fee and wages to Beattie, be it from abroad or home.

I just can't get my head around that Beattie is the "only option". As I said yesterday you have to wonder if our shortlist can only contain one striker at a time.

Your absolutely right. There will be tons of strikers around Europe who could do a job and I am not sure we really need to replace Benni anyway. I would prefer that we sort out the midfield and give Kalinic a run. I think Di Santo could also benefit from having been dropped.

Over the last few years the club have not only sold all our best players but have had a wasteful and seemingly random buying policy. Grella, Andrews, Salgado, Diouf, Vogel and Fowler have all been bought without any thought to the future. Beattie would be another to add to the list.

Sam and JW are always pleading poverty and so did Ince but their scatter-gun approach when buying players hasn't helped...

New reports suggesting Beattie is injured anyway, at least a fortnight, so may not happen at all.

There is a report about David James being out fornight which will delay his move to Stoke but I haven't seen anything about Beattie being injured ?

I would rather see us stick with what we have rather than sign Gudjohsen or Beattie etc....For me neither of them justify the wages/ fee they would demand.

I would rather we kept the money and spent it in the summer in a better market....We have Di Santo, Kalinic & Roberts and if need be we have the likes of Hoilett, MGP or Samba who could go up top if we were short through injury!

We need to be looking at players who are no older than say about 28.....at least then they will have some sort of resale value and wouldnt be a risk (injury wise).

Benny has been playing the old inside forward position as was Dunn before he got injured. The finest player for that position that we should be absolutely hammering the door down for a loan deal is Bentley imo.

We are limited to who we can sign on a number of counts, we cant afford the best, we cant pay better players the wages they are wanting, players who are pure footballers wont want to play our style of football and managers such as Wenger wont want their players on loan playing games where the long ball is prominent as it will hamper their progress and defeat the objective!!

Finally, I think Sam is a bit out of touch now with the young players from other clubs and is following the route he has taken over the years, I think we should try and make do with a couple of loan signings as I honestly dont think Sams tenure at Ewood will be for much longer!!

I would love us to go for Bentley but I don't think we have the ambition. He would be great playing off the forward instead of Dunn or on the right (where I think he is more effective).

If we are going to continue playing Dunn off the striker then I really see no need to replace Benni, if Dunn gets injured we can go 4-4-2 with Kalinic next to Samba or Di Santo.

We should concentrate on getting a good all round midfielder, not Basturk.

Absolutely. Stick with what "strikers" we have and get Dave back.

Imagine this:

Holliet------Bentley-------Olsson

--------DiSanto------------------

-------------Kalinic-------------

Get some.

Stick with what we've got & then buy quality in the summer?????

We need quality NOW!!!

OK we beat Fulham and put up a decent show against Villa, but still lost....

If we lose against Wigan we can soon be dragged back into the mire & with the light weight squad we have I think we would struggle to pull away from the mire.

I would agree with sticking with what we've got if we were in Birmingham's position, but we ain't & until we reach a secure number of points nobody should be sitting back & resting upon their laurels.

We are in a precarious position and to do nothing during this window, except letting McCarthy leave, would be a big mistake.

We all know where we are weak & to just ignore these areas would be foolish.

The fact is we only score one goal a game & our leading scorer hasn't scored for something like 8 weeks.

Goals win games & unless we start finding some from somewhere we are in for a desperate struggle.

Kalinic is starting to fulfil some of his potential, but 1 goal Di Santo???? Ever wonder why Chelsea weren't in a rush to bring him back from loan??

To me loanees are the best option to see us out of this situation and THEN look to get some quality in at summer.

In blackjack terms, if we didn't bring anybody in it would be like sticking on 15 in the hope that the banker and everybody else arounds us busts... a risky move that rarely comes off!!

I do think that another striker is required. Kalinic has really improved over the past couple of weeks and looks like he can cope with the Premiership, but he has still struggled to score goals. I've been disappointed with Di Santo, I really thought he would have scored more goals. Jason Roberts tries hard and is a handful, but he really isn't good enough. I suppose you could say that we have four strikers, because David Dunn has been playing that role this season. If we don't get another striker, I'd be a little concerned about the ones we have being able to score the goals to keep us up. Then again, if we manage to sign the likes of Basturk and Ibricic, then we would have more creativity in midfield to make the chances for our strikers to score.

Also, Sky Sports are reporting now that we are in talks to bring Basturk to the club.

Bloody hell! Who's going to defend? My nerves wouldn't stand it, we'd be losing by the odd goal in eleven!

Thats what I was thinking too!!

Had a big impact at all his clubs, then he went off the boil at them all, except Sheff U

He performed pretty well at Southampton to be fair over a number of years. Everton paid what was then a big fee for him.

Beattie's rubbish though and even in the ridiculous world of football he's earning twice what he should. If we can't find a ready made top class replacement I don't see why a young, hungry kid who's willing to run his socks off wouldn't be a much, much better option. Failing that a journeyman who wouldn't cost money to acquire and would be on at the most £15k a week. Beattie doesn't tick any of those boxes for mine.

To be honest if Rovers want to go down the younger route, then Moses at palace is worth a shout imo.

0.09 We've had a number of emails in to suggest Victor Moses has been spotted at Sunderland. Is this another cock and bull story or has the Eagle really landed in the North East?

Agree with regards to Bentley - but doubt he would want to return or rovers could get him on loan. Pity though.

Lack of ambition to go for Bentley? or perhaps the fact that we couldnt really afford him plus that HE'D NEVER COME BACK. I dont think a player like David Bentley would swallow his pride and rejoin the club he publicly said he was too big for.

A good all round midfielder is hard to come by. Basturk at anywhere near his best is a class player so we could do a lot worse provided he stays fit and can recapture any of his leverkusen form.

To those who are saying that there must be better options then Beattie - well Beattie is proven in the premier league, he is relatively low risk and would cost in the region of what we got paid for Benni. I cant think of many European strikers who we could afford with that kind of money who would do as good a job as Beattie.

Thats not saying by any means that Beattie is a great player, he's not, but when you are dealing with £2/3m, unless you find another Roque Santa Cruz out there, ie. the deal of the season, then you're not going to get much out of it.

South Korean ace Koo Ja-cheol will not be moving to Blackburn Rovers during the current transfer window.

According to sources in the Far East, negotiations between Rovers and Koo's current club Jeju United broke down after a renewed trial offer for the player was turned down.

Despite the setback, Rovers' boss Sam Allardyce will continue to monitor the highly-rated youngster and potentially renew their interest in the summer.

Sorry, but no. I don't think it's the greatest signing, but there we go.

Been sulking for much of the day. Heard about Man U trying to hijack Smalling's move to Arsenal on Monday and didn't write it.

Must be losing my edge. Not happy.

Part of life's experience - but when everybody thinks you have lost it, that is the time to strike back and prove them wrong.

Played orthodox right-wing last night. Is there a better crosser of a ball in the English game?

Could we then sign him on a 6 month contract.

If we sign him on a longer one, I fear he will become just another Diouf.

Replying To Sam's January Targets - BRFCS.COM[/url]='872448']

We should really be fighting with wham about bringing bentley on loan.

For me if the transfer window shut today I would be happy. Get on with what we have and then buy something of quality in the summer.

After Aruna Dindane.

Aruna Dindane

Dindane would be a decent shout. A bit of experience to compliment the younger lads. Better than Beattie imo. Sam has also said he was a player he was looking at in the summer.
