[Archived] Sam's January Targets

Recommended Posts

Sometimes the market place does tell the truth.

Moses has been available for weeks.

Three Championship sides want him.

A pal of mine played with him and says he is a luxury player. Can Rovers afford that in their style?

His agent is Tony Finnegan who some will recall is not a major Rovers fan.

It seems Finnegan is touting him about for the region of £1m or £2m then he can get excessive wages for the kid.

Bookies are linking Man City with him, but Man City are liked with everybody who could be moving club. I think he's holding out for Premier League football, at this stage of the transfer window it could be first come first served.

I think if we are to sign a striker we need a strong experienced player to help the development of Nicko and Di Santo.

Nicko, do you think its likely we won't make a 'solid' move for a striker until Benni has actually gone? Sam reckons Benni's transfer will be completed in 48 hours. If that is the case then its not leaving us much time to get a player in to take a look at, medical, discuss terms etc.

I think you'll find that terms etc will have been agreed. Maybe it's Rovers playing the game with Big Mac now and making him sweat (for the first time in a while). We could be dragging it out until later today so it's too late for him to play against us. In the mean time, we could be talking to various suitable replacements and when the time is right we can release Big Mac and sign whoever else. We'd be crazy to publicise who/if we are talking to anybody at this point.

As posted previously, lets hope the medical doesn't include a body mass index calculation....

Bloody Hell, the Pedersenettes are out in force today. ;)

He's had 2 good games on the trot and all of a sudden he's Pele. IF he can understand that he has to play like that every game then he MAY have a future at the club. However, the odd occasion he's raised his game since 2007 always seems to coincide with a transfer window or talk of a new contract. Is that REALLY the type of player we want to keep? I fear that if we offer him a new contract he will slide back into mediocrity again.

The sad thing really is that he's proven over the last two games he can be a decent player when he puts his mind to it, so that leaves a question mark over his motivation and application over the majority of the last 3 seasons?

I know there is a striker lined up. The expectation is that Benni will get his permit - probably today. So it would then be a case of flying the target in [yes, I think he is foreign]. He may even have had a medical, you never know. ;)

I don't think the picture will become any clearer unitl we see Benni being paraded at Upton Park. JW will not allow Sam to spend a penny until he has that cheque of Sullivan & Gold in his hand. Sam is bang on when he says that this transfer window is a pain in the rear end. Why why can't the trustees dip in to their coffers and give Sam the money that we need to bring in a decent forward.

He's actually been good all year (and since the Sunderland game). 4 goals, a few assists. Not to be sniffed at. I don't think we should get rid (as I've said) purely because if his form continues (to impress suitors) he'll make up the missed transfer fee through league position.

For us to invest in somebody like Moses or Beckford Is a gamble. However for the future of the club it is well worth taking , it would be a dream come true if we signed the pair of them. If we look at our current squad we do seem to have an older squad compared to most teams in the league. At a guess the average age of our current squad is about 30-31.

I think you'll find most posters in favour of keeping MGP have given him a fair bit of flack over the last couple of seasons.

Nobody is saying he's 'Pele', what we are saying is that present form warrants a new contract and in the new position he has been a success. Letting him leave, especially in this transfer window will only weaken our squad and it will be almost impossible to replace him. If he gets settled in his deeper position, working with Ollson on the wing, the future could be a lot brighter than some are making out.

I don't agree with the pattern of events that you mention, I don't recall his form picking up to earn a contract or to put himself in the shop window, I don't recall him saying he wants to be anywhere apart from at the Rovers. It is reported that he is flattered by interest from Fenerbache but who wouldn't be? I'd be flattered if another company offered me a job, so why shouldn't he?

It seems your putting him in a similar bracket to that of Big Mac, I think that is far from the truth and very unfair. It has been easy to blame certain players for our dip in form and certain players have suffered from our dip in form more than others but things seem to be coming to a little now and we need to keep our main squad members on board.

If Rovers put a fair contract on the table I think he'll sign straight away and get on with his job.

Nah, if you take a look at our first team squad quite a few were born in 1979 or before. The likes of Robbo , Nelson, Jacubson, Roberts, Chimbonda,Dunn. We do have a few that are under 30 with the likes of Givet and Samba even they are more closer to 30 than 25.

That wink is such a tease!

If he's had a medical then presumably we've either had a bid accepted (on the proviso that Benni went) or he is a free agent? Nonda!?

Samba is 25, yet he is closer to 30 than 25?!?:lol:

As for Stats on the squad make-up, based on players used this season....

22 - different players who have started

1 - Just been a sub

97% - % of sub quota used

5 - Under 21 years old

10 - Over 30 years old

4 - English

Ave Age - 28

It sounds like somebody else has been listening to the commentators from the Vila game...

We had an average age of 27 starting the Wigan game. Quite acceptable I'd say? Our 1st choice goalkeeper is only 31, we could see a good few years out of Robbo yet. With only Nelsen, Diouf and Pascal over the age of 30.

Include 3 22yr olds and a 20 yr old in our starting line up with others soon to be vying for places and the future looks good.

To me Beckford would be a crazy signing from what I've seen of him and Moses looks to be going to a Champonship outfit.

A Leeds ST holder that I work with says Beckford looks good in League One from time to time but would be well out of his depth playing in the top flight.

Sounds interesting.

I'm guessing it's the fella who you said was "interesting" or words to that effect when somebody mentioned his name yesterday.

Would be a great move.

When is he due to sign for Spurs then? ;)

Well not really rumours, news reports & his agent....

His agent telling the media Prem clubs wanted his client - then the press reporting it?

TBH Hughesy, I think there are very few posters on here who have seen enough of any player from the lower leagues to know that they're good enough to play in the PL.

Putting name after name forward as one that we should "sign immediately", even though there is no link whatsoever to BRFC, is just a waste of reading space and frustrating for people who want to read genuine Rovers talk.
