[Archived] Sam's January Targets

Recommended Posts

DINDANE...too many agents, too little time.

BENJANI...didn't his medical take so long when he joined Man City that old Thaksin extended the deadline and broke the rules to get him?...surely you are not going down that road.

BEATTIE...other clubs in, no-one agreeing a fee.

Farce.

Is this really what 32 days of Transfer Window activity has boiled down to? Personally I am hoping that we are more frugal in the next 3 hours.

Am I the only one hoping we don't sign anyone today?

Looking at our targets yes though its a big gamble. Basturk hasn't played much and has been injury plagued, if Kalinic gets injured that just leaves us with Roberts and Di Santo and there are questions over Dunny's fitness as well.

We probably could survive until the summer with what we have got, a few injuries or a few bad performances could put a lot of pressure on us though.

Frugal!?

economical in use or expenditure; prudently saving or sparing; not wasteful

Isn't that what Blackburn Rovers are all about?

Isn't there an argument that if we sign a striker likely to bang a few goals in, even on a short term deal then the resulting league position will more or less pay the salary of that person? It seems to me that a lot of people are saying "If we don't replace Mccarthy then we'll still survive." Don't our finances depend on reaching a certain league position?

Not bothered if we don't sign anybody now as they are probably not worth wasting what little finance we have in the pot, we got some personnel in for the midfield which we have required for a couple of seasons at least, I say keep the money in the pot and wait till the Summer...

Rovers keeping money in the pot is akin to keeping water boiling in a pot on a hot stove: it evaporates.

Exactly.....We should have kept Benni, he is a proven goalscorer.

The money we got for him will never be seen again, it will go to wages.

We were struggling for goals before Benni went, An injury to Kalinic and

we are pretty much screwed!

Id like to think that is what Rovers are all about. A loan signing wouldnt be the end of the world because it allows us to trial a potential option without staking capital risk. Personally, I think the worst thing we can do is be rushed into throwing £3+ at a journeyman striker to replace Benni.

Dunn and Di Santo were getting a pretty good partnership going at one point, although it did go off the boil. Still wouldn't say we're screwed if Kalinic does get injured.

Not really possible in today's world though was it? You can't keep players who are determined to leave unless you are a very big club indeed, and even they sometimes decide to cut their losses and get rid for the sake of dressing room harmony

Even a loan signing would cost us at least 500k in wages plus signing on and agents fees etc until the end of June.

As I've said before, imo rather than just fritter away "dead money"on (never) has beens we need to be looking at spending more initially if need be on players who have sell on potential if required.

This is what I have been trying to say.

I shall (I won't say enjoy) dig this thread out at the end of the summer when we've spent peanuts again, sold our best players and been told that McCarthy's exit back in January was to "balance the books".

We're pinning so much hope on young shoulders in Niko here. If he gets injured or goes on a barron spell, I cannot see Di Santo or Roberts getting the required goals. We'd need Dunn and/or Basturk to be fit and firing in that case.

Big ask.

If that's where it needs to go that's where it needs to go. We need to pay wages and the money has to come from somewhere. Does nobody on this forum understand the concept of money!

He didn't want to be here and the manager doesn't want him here. Simple as.

I don't know, I think three quid is a pretty fair deal for most experienced Premiership players!!

But what if that loan signing scored a game winner, thereby earning us close to a million more because of finishing 2 places higher in the table? Or what if Roberts got a red card and a 3 match ban at the same time Niko was injured and we were due to play Chelsea, thereby relegating DiSanto to the dressing room?

Exactly, I was going to say the same. If it goes on wages, then at least we won't be forced to sell someone in the summer purely to pay for the wage problem!

Equally, what if that loan signing got a red card, injury, or missed an absolute sitter or ten? Or kept Kalinic out of the team unfairly? A loan signing can weaken you too, keep in mind. No point playing these what if games.

Really? Thats sort of logic suggests that if we'd kept him we'd not have been able to pay the wages of the others.

Damned good job he went then if thats the case eh?

I completely agree, I'm not saying Benni shouldn't be replaced, I'm saying he shouldn't be replaced by Beattie or Benjani.

Let's be honest we've known Benni would be off this January for several months and his replacement should have been sorted out long before now.
