He said he wouldn't sell Benni until the financial and footballing side of things were right.

Den, a man who goes AWOL and has no respect for his employer or manager deserves to languish in the reserves; but at what cost in wages?

We had to get rid of him off the wage budget.

There was no suitable replacement. End of story.

I'm happy with this, especially NOT signing average players who would drain the finances for little return.

Besides Pedersen is a revelation in centre midfield. He can score goals from here.

We need to get Pedersen and Hoilett signed up before summer, just to stop them leaving for free in summer. Maybe we could offer better terms with Benni and Treacy off the wage bill.

I'd bet that Big Sam has made sure that the £2m from Benni is his to spend at the end of the season.

I'm glad we didn't just spend it for the sake of it, will be interesting what BS says about it.

Fingers crossed for Basturk coming good and not just being some company for Salgado on the bench,

PANIC PANIC PANIC!

We have exactly the same squad that beat wigan and performed very well at west ham and benni`s move paves the way for our bright young talent to get a chance. i am delighted. how anyone can beleive beattie would have added anything at all to our team is beyond me, i`m so glad sam saw sense and he wasn`t even in the running to come to rovers in the end. i`m sure that`s the case as `beatts` was doing everything but hang a neon sign on his head to attract rovers, including imo getting dunny to openly ask sam to buy him via the press.

Of course it just could be about the money? I bet the Benni fee magically disappears come May ....

Working under such conditions yet still having the club well away from the relegation zone and in a semi final after coming in when we virtually down shows that Sam has actually done a pretty damn good job so all told.

Certainly not perfect and there is a long way to go and to improve...but it makes ceaseless criticism of him by some seem unfair.

Think we need to realise that even compared to a couple of years ago our financial situation has changed. We really are a selling club. Whatever we sell we won't be able to invest anywhere near all that amount on replacements.

Oh...and what we could do with an extra 3million a year...a seemingly small amount but it wouldn't half help every year...

Our financial situation has DRASTICALLY weakened over the last 2 years. Unless something changes, and I dont mean a billionaire buying us, in the medium term future it will catch up with us (at the latest).

17 goals which ever way we look at it.

I'm gonna leave it here, but at the end of the day [ :( hate that saying :D ], we have weakened the striking department. That's gross bad management.

den, he got 10 league goals last season, 1 in the FA Cup and 2 in the League Cup. I'm not sure how many of those were penalties. rovers.co.uk - Benni page.

Weakened the stiking department? Just about. That's debatable. Maybe he'll turn in for training and get fit now. That'll be good of him. £35K of our money a week he was taking.

As for not getting a replacement. It's 4-4-1-1 from here on in. Why pay over the odds (or money we don't have) on the likes of the three we were linked with?

Not sure if your geuninely shocked at my response or misunderstood... we certainly needed to replace any striker we sold, due to not having any goalscorers in the squad but there was no way we'd pick anyone up better than what we've already got for the relatively small amount we got for Benni. And by the time summer comes round that measly pot of pocket money we got will have spent on subsidising the cheapest tickets in the league in order to maintain players' wages. Financially we are fighting a losing battle. We truly are small fish in big pond. I would try and pick out some good examples of small town clubs with sustained premiership status but we are the best example!

My first contribution on this thread because I knew how it would eventually pan out - just as it always does. Next time one of these threads gets started in the next window - do yourselves a huge favour and abstain from posting, there really is no point.

By the way, I cannot see any positive in selling a striker and not replacing him, unless it's all about keeping our powder dry.

Well,in two seasons we've gone from 7th in the league with talent such as Tugay, RSC, Bentley to not being able to attract the likes of Benjani, Dindane or Beattie. Is that down to bad luck?

Unfortunately, when you sell your best players so often and so readilly, the rest see you as also rans and the outcome is inevitable. At times it seemed as though half of this m/b were in favour of reaping the cash as well.

Seems like the cash has to be got from somewhere den. It seems isn't just about keeping players...we see to be having to make money through transfers as well.

Not the manager's fault. If he had been given a decent wedge of money surely he would have loved to improve his options.

I agree LDRover. Nothing really to panic about though. I'd rather not sign a potential waste of space and save the money. After all, who knows what will happen to Pompey in the next couple of weeks... This transfer window has been utterly disastrous for them and long may we stay away from a similar fate and similar activities.

The scary thing is, if the club actually came out and said there was a distinct lack of quality out there so we weren't bothering then you could ..perhaps understand

them not buying anyone.

However, if all the reports were to believed they expressed an interest in all 3, which is absolutely ridiculous.

Shambles!

They expressed an interest but likely even those players were far more than we were willing to play.

Not a shambles as such...just skint!

Megson was on Football Focus a few weeks back saying at Bolton he had the least amount of money in the league. Rollocks! Try casting a glance over Ewood way...

Yeah but even if we did have a decent wedge of cash, who would want to come and play for us? Someone better than Benjani??
