den Posted February 2, 2010 Posted February 2, 2010 No, I didn't. I just said I'm happy with what we have done this window and can't see any reason to be despondent. Yet you seem to think we had a poor window and I can't understand why. Your explanation seemed to revolve around using samba......when we have 3 strikers for one position. I don't really get you, that's all. Mellison. ada2020 said that there are no good players available in the Jan transfer window. I said he's a clever lad if he knows that. You come in and say "And you do, don't you den? You know everything about football and are above us mere muggles" John said he thinks Samba is possibly our best striker. I said I didn't think he is. You said we have "Brought in Basturk (who will be great according to history)." and We have "Brought in Linganzi; a young player with plenty of potential; spotted by the same scouts who brought us NZonzi. So what don't you follow?" I said "Your knowledge of football goes unsurpassed Mellison" -------------------------- It went something like that Mellison. Never mind mate, you've a good heart. Don't get dismayed by old miserable geezers like us. Plus, we're probably annoying a few other miserable old gits.

mellison24 Posted February 2, 2010 Posted February 2, 2010 I wouldn't discount that happening either to be honest, in fact I'm expecting him to state his desire to move onto bigger things soon So long as he's in the first team, we SHOULD be okay. I think he knows he's our best defender and enjoys being the big fish of our defense. I reckon it'll be at least another season after this if he does state his desire to move.
unluckymorton Posted February 2, 2010 Posted February 2, 2010 I wouldn't discount that happening either to be honest, in fact I'm expecting him to state his desire to move onto bigger things soon Samba may well do that and not many of us will be too surprised. However that is why we have tied him down to a long term deal. I can't see him using dirty tricks, he's more likely to hand in a transfer request and we'll sell him at the right price, on the other hand if he see's out his current contract then moves on for free we'll have done well to get 6 or 7 seasons out of him. ewoodpo Posted February 2, 2010 Posted February 2, 2010 Mido has joined West Ham ( who tried to sign every available striker ) on loan for £1000.00 per week . I don't know if Sam had shown any interest in him , I know he is a lazy so and so however for a grand a week I think we missed a bargain.
jim mk2 Posted February 2, 2010 Posted February 2, 2010 I would of taken Mido, ! I would of taken Mido too, but would he of accepted £500 a week of Rovers, and would he of been better than Roberts ? He would of scored a few goals no doubt but I doubt he would of lasted long at Ewood. Of would he of ?

ada2020 Posted February 2, 2010 Posted February 2, 2010 I really don't know how you guys have the knowledge of the world transfer market. Didn't claim to have knowledge of the international transfer market did I?? I stated that I could understand your disappointment if we had failed to land a top class striker. Were we linked with a top class striker Den? If we were and I have forgotten then I'll shut up, please prove me wrong so I can start bitching and crying about how ###### Sam and Rovers are for not signing a striker. Then I can start singing the praises of forward thinking Wigan Athletic and Roberto Martinez. The fact is, as far as we have been led to believe, we failed to land three donkeys which have managed to divide opinion all over this thread.
thenodrog Posted February 2, 2010 Posted February 2, 2010 Samba at centre forward was immense? You would be happy to watch that again? Gobsmacked John. Gobsmacked. Samba is a good option after 75 mins if we need a change, 6ft 5" and built like the proverbial brick bog he'd be absolutely unplayable if he was 7ft 5" when jumping for a ball with his head instead of 5ft 5"! What tf goes on at Brockhall?

Tyrone Shoelaces Posted February 2, 2010 Posted February 2, 2010 I'd rather knock nails through the back of my hands than watch Samba start up front again. I can still remember the game at Liverpool, totally embarrassing.

I thought this post meant you believed that no-one worth buying, was available. My apologies if you didn't mean that.: I could understand all of your complaints if we had the chance to sign a REAL top class center forward, but all that was on offer (other than Robbie Keane, which we had no chance of getting) was utter dross and no better than what we have now. I don't think anyone actually thought we should have gone for Benjani, Dindane or Beattie. The discussion hasn't been about that.
JamieUK Posted February 2, 2010 Posted February 2, 2010 I'm satisfied with our transfer dealings this window... I am a realist and pointed out at the beginning of the season that this campaign was/is going to be a transitional one. It's the manager's first full season, a high number of players coming to the end of their contract and new rules coming into force for 2010/2011. We've got enough about us to finish mid table and then build further in the Summer. I'm excited with the new 4-2-3-1 formation and with the right players (we're almost there) we could have a side capable of pushing for a European place. Maybe it's too much optimism for most tho...?!
FourLaneBlue Posted February 2, 2010 Posted February 2, 2010 Well we're in February and the lads up front have contributed 5 goals between them. Di Santo doesn't look like he'll ever score again, while we all know about Jason's finishing prowess. Niko's got a lot on his shoulders. How much is that down to the strikers themselves and how much down to lack of quality goalscoring chances we created for them? I'd say the second of those plays a bigger part than the first. As for Benni going...I think it has been a bit of a cockup by the club but somewhat taken out of their hands by Benni's actions. They were looking around for a replacement and hoping to keep Benni until they got one. However Benni got worried at the lack of progress and took matters into his own hands, no doubt with the knowledge of the new Hammers owners, and forced the issue. Therefore they were pretty much forced to get rid of Benni as what good is a striking striker? Then the only options they had were bottom of the barrel stuff like the 3 mentioned yet big bucks were needed for them. At least that is how I interpret it through reading through the various comments by Benni, Sam etc So... I think they were hoping to hold onto Benni but he wouldn't stand for it. I don't blame him that much to be honest for that...he knows he was not THAT wanted plus he would get a very juicy signing-on fee, another 15k wages as reported in the press (I bet it is in reality more than that the way Gold+Sullivan have been offering silly wages) and a chance to live in a city like London. So...that is where we are. IF - and it is a big IF - Basturk can really contribute we won't be weaker. There are no players that have moved that I would really think would be great for Rovers except Robbie Keane. 110k a week though?!? I don't know enough about this Moses chap. He better be good though as it's almost as if some on here expect him to lead the Wiganites to the Promised Land or something! Not a great transfer window. I don't remember us having a good one at all to be honest since Hughes brought in Savage, Nelson on a free and a Mokoena who actually did a decent job for us in the 4-5-1 Hughes treated to in his first year or so at Rovers.
FourLaneBlue Posted February 2, 2010 Posted February 2, 2010 Actually...just remembered that one year we got Warnock and Dunn in...that was pretty damn good as well to be fair
Roversider Posted February 2, 2010 Posted February 2, 2010 Thank heavens the window is now closed and we can focus on the players we have at the club. Shame to lose McCarthy but he wanted away and couldn't give enough consistency, on the plus side we got some money for the old lad and are now saving forty Midos a week (allegedly). We have also brought Basturk in and we do need some creativity in midfield, on paper he should be the business but the jury will be out until he demonstrates it in a blue and white shirt. The Algerian lad doesn't count, the club says he is for the future so not this season. Reid is beginning to look fitter and who knows Grella may actually get as fit as Dunny! Kalinic is playing with a fire and passion and with the system we are using there only needs to be one central striker so we now have three for the job. So far we have struck lucky with Nzonzi but he is beginning to look a little jaded. What now needs to happen is to sign Hoillet up, bit concerning that he is holding back and if we can, then get MGP on an extension. If he wants to run his contract down then that is okay providing he keeps putting in the shifts. He looks a lot better when he is playing infield so if we can get Givet back to leftback Olsson will be first choice left midfield. We can always strengthen but there is a good balance to the squad. We took a gamble in reducing the wage bill dramatically but that looks a very sensible decision now. All the best deals will happen in summer. Dindane was potential but Sunderland walked away and so did we so it sounded like he was a problem contractually. We won't be spectacular this season but we will not be at risk of relegation and we can plan for the 2010-11 season. Personally I am happy with John Williams and Sam Allardyce, come on youy blues!
magicalmortensleftpeg Posted February 2, 2010 Posted February 2, 2010 Actually...just remembered that one year we got Warnock and Dunn in...that was pretty damn good as well to be fair Didnt we get Warnock, Dunn and Samba all in the January transfer window that year (07)? Just remember Warnock and Samba making their debuts against Luton in the Fa Cup. Must have been one of the most productive windows that any team has had.
FourLaneBlue Posted February 2, 2010 Posted February 2, 2010 Didnt we get Warnock, Dunn and Samba all in the January transfer window that year (07)? Just remember Warnock and Samba making their debuts against Luton in the Fa Cup. Must have been one of the most productive windows that any team has had. How did we get all them in? Did we sell someone? Lucas Neill went I remember. Shows that even just 3 years ago we seem to have a bit more of that powder - whether dry, wet or just plain damp I don't know - than we do now. Seems to get tougher financially each year for Rovers.
RevidgeBlue Posted February 2, 2010 Posted February 2, 2010 The only thing which worries me about Benni leaving is the fact we now only own 2 first team strikers. That's the crux of the matter. In the summer when Di Santo goes back we'll have only have Kalinic and then Roberts right at the tail end of his career. Compare this with the situation in Hughes' last season when we had Benni and Jason (only both several years younger) RSC and Derbyshire. It's frightening how far the Club has declined in so short a space of time. As for this season we should just about have enough points in the bag to stagger over the finishing line but it's taking a huge gamble on Kalinic staying fit until the end of the season. God knows who's going to score any if he gets injured.
RevidgeBlue Posted February 2, 2010 Posted February 2, 2010 How did we get all them in? Did we sell someone? Lucas Neill went I remember. Warnock didn't come in until Lucash left. I may be wrong but I my impression was Samba, Nelsen and Savage all came in a year before that in Hughes first (January) transfer window.
FourLaneBlue Posted February 2, 2010 Posted February 2, 2010 I think Samba came a good 2 years after the others Rev.
stuwilky Posted February 3, 2010 Posted February 3, 2010 Samba, Warnock and Dunn were all signed within a week or so mid Jan 2007, the same week Lucas moved on. Wasnt Sav Jan 2005?
magicalmortensleftpeg Posted February 3, 2010 Posted February 3, 2010 in 05' Sav arrived with Nelsen and Mokoena. 06' was when Bentley signed for us permenantly and in the next game I think he did quite well. We also got Pongolle if I remember correctly. 07' was Warnock, Berner, Samba and Dunn. 08' was Vogel, 09' Diouf. Im sure there were others in 08 and 09 but I have forgotten, they werent special whoever they were.
