Seriously, some of you are in cloud cuckoo land. We can replace some of our 30k plus wage earners with better for less? Who's got the magic wand?

It's not going to happen. Not this season and not next unless the world football markets turn on their heads. It'd be nice to dream like that but reality bites.

Well, I would say you only need to compare NZonzi, Kalinic or Junior's wage to Pedersen, Benni or Diouf's to see that this is not really true.

However it does depend on finding some real gems very young, untested or from financially poorer leagues which is tricky.

Clubs must pay high wages to attract the best players. The stumbling block are the poor players on long contracts. Maybe the contracts offered should be more lucrative than our rivals BUT no longer than 18 months with a promise of re-negotiaition based on performance and appearences. We'd win and lose of course, Ped's time here would have proved a parrallel but the likes of Richters, Reid, Salgado, Van Heerden, Julie etc could have been quickly disposed of. The downside of course is that the Samba's, Givets, RSC's and Warnocks could have walked away for nowt.

Swings and roundabouts of course but it does illustrate that the value of the best managers is not always displayed in results on the pitch. See my sig.

Players get rewarded with big contracts for big performances, but once the performances dry up in my mind they should not be getting the same money as before. I really am all for perfromance related pay and the such, but it must be done by all and not just rovers. I wonder if we could start offering shorter contracts say 2 years with an option on the clubs side for more provided they maintain the same level of performance. At the end of the day they get the wages they do because of the way they have perfromed. So if they are not performing to that level often why should they get the same?

But we must get away from giving out big contracts to players who don't deserve them, Roberts springs to mind.

Not alot but he is 3rd choice behind Chimbonda & Salgado and I dont see the need for 3 right backs

Sam did!!!! :xmas:

Sam did!!!! :xmas:

I think what Sam did was sign Jacobsen early because he was a solid freebie - however Salgado then became available and he couldnt resist. Warnock was then going so we needed someone capable of playing left back (and we found a bargain with Chimbonda). I think if Sam had the choice at the start then he wouldnt of signed Jacobsen.

:rover: been saying that all season,if we get a couple of mill for jacobsen it will nullify saldago obscene wages :brfcsmilie:

Not often I agree with you...but this time I do.

Fair play to Jacobsen though he is very steady, however he is nothing special - hence why he doesnt hold down a 1st team spot.

But nor is Salgado. From what I've seen thus far, I prefer Jacobsen at RB. Nullify Salgado's wages by getting rid of him, if you must. But I don't think it really IS a case of too many RB's. You could look at it as Jacobsen and Salgado at RB, with Givet and Chimbo at LB?

Chimbo is naturally right footed so I think not!

Salgado looked very good in the cup - he looked like he had that bit of class that you expect from a player who has played at the highest levels.

Also Jacobsen could probably be sold on....Salgado is abit older and probably on double his money so very unlikely we would get a fee or a club willing to take his wages on.....

It wasn't a dig at Sam, more a joke at his expense. I can see why he snatched at Salgado he is an ex magpies boss (joke not a dig). :xmas:

I doubt we'd get much for Jacobsen, anyways he's done alright. For me unless he plays more it will be Salgado I'd be moving on. 40K+ a week against 20 or so? for a back-up to Chimbonda. I'm sure there where a few takers for him in the summer just not mainstream offers, but I reckon one of those clubs would snap him up.

you could but if they are all fit, who plays?

Chim---Samba--Nelsen---Givet

Sam's just been on talk absolute drivel and ###### all the time radio, and said Ped's is going no where. Whilst I hope thats wrong and he is, he has however mentioned another player and his possible departure.

Benni, basically wants to play more and isn't 100% happy at rovers anymore and that he will be hard to keep hold off. He did say we would just move into the market and replace him though.

So I guess thats Benni's had one or two enquire after him. Whilst I agree he's our best finisher, I can also see exactly why Sam doesn't play him more. He most certainly is his own worst enemy is Benni, although if Sams already aware of his intent them at least we will have had plenty of scouting time to pick out a replacement.

I think that managers frequently say one thing and do another during transfer windows. Both to drive up/down the transfer costs, and to mis-direct the opposition.

Out of all our strikers Benni would be the hardest to replace in my opinion, we can find people willing to run around a lot and not score but Players who can and will stick the ball in the net are harder to come by. I dread to think that we could sell a real football player and replace him with another carthorse in Beattie.

Roberts, Di Santo and Beattie would all be varying shades of the same for me.

To sell Benni is the easy part, to replace him with a striker of the same quality is the hard part.

Looks like Sam Allardyces credibility will be on the line for the quality of striker he brings in should MaCarthy leave. Interesting times.

At the moment his priority is for a quality central midfielder.

Sams just been on Sky Sport News talking about Benni.

Sam must be confident of keeping Di Santo, as he kept refering to having 4 strikers.

If he lets Benni go and Chelsea recall Di Santo we are down to Niko and Roberts.

Sam is usually quite pessimistic on things - however on Rovers World he did sound quite hopeful of keeping Di Santo.
