Stuart Posted December 22, 2009 Posted December 22, 2009 Roberts for beattie- yes please The only reason to exchange Roberts for Beattie would be to freshen things up a bit. Players can go a bit stale and a change of scene might do them good. However, it's only really a good deal if it's a straight swap with no fees. But they don't happen any more.

joey_big_nose Posted December 22, 2009 Posted December 22, 2009 I'd take Beattie for Roberts. It would actually give us some presence up front (Di Santo isn't great for a 6'4"!) However, if we have to dig too deep into our pockets, I would rather we invested that money in a playmaker. Doesn't have much presence?? Di Santo wins 60% or 70% of the balls forward on his own up front. What do you want? I would say is hold up play is almost faultless. Issue is he doesn't seem to be able to shoot, and gets a bit lost when facing the goal but really an extremely decent target man. A stable of Beattie, Di Santo, Kalinic and Mccarthy looks pretty decent (provided someone starts scoring....). However there is a big qestion though what happens if we lose McCarthy - who can we get in with that sort of experience? It would also be nice to get a Defoe/Bellamy type fast channel player but who can offer that?
T4E Posted December 22, 2009 Posted December 22, 2009 Beattie is a far better option than Roberts because he can finish, as well as doing all the other things Roberts does slightly better. He will be a good back up to Di Santo, which is basically what we need if he stays, at 20 years old he will need a rest from time to time.
mhead Posted December 22, 2009 Posted December 22, 2009 usual cynicism on this Board for a local Player. went to QEGS....cried his eyes out when Woy sold him, never scores against the Blue n White and would run like crazy for 'his' team. Dunny...get it sorted! And Message-boarders - remember Beatts may be reading this. " Get into 'em"
John Posted December 22, 2009 Posted December 22, 2009 If we were to sign him, would Stuart Holden move in January?
Barrymaffia Posted December 22, 2009 Posted December 22, 2009 One eddie, Beattie is poor, two his only strength is heading crosses, and three Rovers NO LONGER have anyone who can cross the ball from either wing, four, like you say he isnt on small wages either. What planet is the manager and some of the fans on in wanting Beattie. I could understand reinstating Duffer on the left wing this woud be excellent for the team but Beattie, no, nO, NO. Fully agree.... Thought Duff would be a great signing and ok he is a bit injury prone, but when he's on the pitch he can change a game plus he would give us some width and options on the left. We all know what he can do. Beattie.... No thanks. He has not set the league on fire has he? Ok neither has Roberts buts whats the point in a straight swap with strikers if neither can score.
bellamy11 Posted December 22, 2009 Posted December 22, 2009 never scores against the Blue n White Yes he does!
nicko Posted December 22, 2009 Posted December 22, 2009 nicko, has a move been made for Beattie or its just hearsay? Two different agents - both pals of the manager - are trying to do it. I think it will be hard to pull it off myself. But I could see Beattie being bought and Roberts sold to someone else.
John Posted December 22, 2009 Posted December 22, 2009 But I could see Beattie being bought and Roberts sold to someone else. Presumably, if that was to happen, then Sam would feel more comfortable selling Benni(he obviously rates Beattie as a proven striker, goal scorer).
Hughesy Posted December 22, 2009 Posted December 22, 2009 But I could see Beattie being bought and Roberts sold to someone else. Is that a hint? Heard of anyone interested, and what sort of cash we could get for him!?
nicko Posted December 22, 2009 Posted December 22, 2009 Is that a hint? Heard of anyone interested, and what sort of cash we could get for him!? Not really. I think it is well known in the game that Sam is not a big fan of Roberts and McCarthy and - via agents - they have been touted around. If you got rid of both and raised the money and cleared the wages for one or two new 'bargain' strikers you would have won the lottery. It's going to be a very interesting few weeks.
FourLaneBlue Posted December 22, 2009 Posted December 22, 2009 Beattie.... No thanks. He has not set the league on fire has he? Getting rid and replacing Roberts while spending very little...and you want someone who "has set the league on fire"?!?! At various times Beattie has done that in the past. However expecting to replace Roberts with a quality Prem-standard striker...how we gonna do that? Breed one?
Amo Posted December 22, 2009 Posted December 22, 2009 Doesn't have much presence?? Di Santo wins 60% or 70% of the balls forward on his own up front. What do you want? I would say is hold up play is almost faultless. Yet for a target man of his height, his headed goals/assists is decisively poor.

Well Nicko, likening the replacing of Roberts and McCarthy with Beattie and another 'bargain' striker to winning the lottery, sums up just how far we've fallen as a club. Not that I'm not fully aware but it's just a stark reminder.
Hughesy Posted December 22, 2009 Posted December 22, 2009 If you got rid of both and raised the money and cleared the wages for one or two new 'bargain' strikers you would have won the lottery. What are their combined wages - close to 85k a week?? Any news on anybody interested in Roberts/ McCarthy!?
joey_big_nose Posted December 22, 2009 Posted December 22, 2009 What are their combined wages - close to 85k a week?? Any news on anybody interested in Roberts/ McCarthy!? I imagine whatever Beattie came in on would roughly match what Roberts went out on. Might be able to save a bit though if we replace McCarthy. Nicko - you heard anything about this Holden chap? Seems like he is a possible, and an outright statement of a contract offer seems pretty concrete information?
Luke Lim Posted December 22, 2009 Posted December 22, 2009 My Christmas wish. Bring back Duff, Bentley and Bellamy and (maybe Hughes too). Sign any free, young promising players. And we should be more than fine.

I find this interesting as he relied on them both to get us out the s*** last season and it worked very well. Is it an attitude thing?
Amo Posted December 22, 2009 Posted December 22, 2009 Surely, if we did sell McCarthy, we could save that money for a midfielder and keep Kalinic, Beattie, Di Santo & Hoilett as our strike-force?
Majiball Posted December 22, 2009 Posted December 22, 2009 Surely, if we did sell McCarthy, we could save that money for a midfielder and keep Kalinic, Beattie, Di Santo & Hoilett as our strike-force? Whilst it looks like a promising quartet I'd like someone witha track record perhaps another loan till the summer.
John Posted December 22, 2009 Posted December 22, 2009 I find this interesting as he relied on them both to get us out the s*** last season and it worked very well. Is it an attitude thing? Was thinking the same. Think Beattie would be an OK signing - an improvment on Roberts. I am sure we will be careful though on our striking situation. At least Benni/Roberts have a track record of helping us stay up (should we be in a relegation battle).
nicko Posted December 22, 2009 Posted December 22, 2009 On the lad Holden...I have not heard much about him but the info from America seems to be genuine. However it seems an odd one. However most clubs are finding it very hard to unearth players here right now, so looking in the MLS is not that outrageous a plan.
Blue blood Posted December 22, 2009 Posted December 22, 2009 I find this interesting as he relied on them both to get us out the s*** last season and it worked very well. Is it an attitude thing? Maybe in Roberts case it's a can't hit a cows arse with a banjo thing. Added to which if Benni goes Roberts is even more limited, he only seems to work well with Benni, and whatever the reasoning Benni's time at ewood is clearly up. Shame really I'd keep Benni myself, the only top uality striker at the club, but I suppose funds and current tactics are compelling reasons to get rid.
Iceman Posted December 22, 2009 Posted December 22, 2009 Beattie in a swap for Roberts, sounds like an okay bit of business. Sell Benni for say 3mill, and bring Luca Toni in on a free. Toni Beattie Di Santo Kalinic Hoilett
