Afternoon update #1 of 1

Transfer digest covering the period from 14:30 yesterday to 14:30 today. The Sam's Targets thread has once again been extremely quiet and there is nothing transfer-related to report from that thread. However, nicko's activity on the Nicko thread has included posts on transfer-related matters during this period, so today's digest is taken from the Nicko thread and is a chronological summary of relevant discussions.

Any comments should be confined to the respective threads - DO NOT POST THEM HERE!

****************

There was a lot of frank talking last week. It may have done some good all round.

Of course, the apologists will deny this, but never mind.

However there did seem to be some agreement that investment would be a good plan.

I would imagine today's result means the manager may get to spend.

Soon would be good. The window does shut.

Midfield HAS to be the priority. How you can start with Reid and Nzonzi is scary.

Obviously a striker would come in if you got rid of one.

How ironic. Benni has been offered here, there and everywhere and is constantly at loggerheads...and yet he is the main man today.

Football, bwuddy hell.

Nicko, wouldnt bet the story has fully gone away but least the result was positive today.

Heres to a week or two of deadwood flogging and decent signings.

I think the crisis is over.

But you will notice that no-one has come in this window.

A couple of deals set up and not tied up.

Draw your own conclusions from that one.

Hopefully there will be some movement now. It is still needed.

Nicko are the rumours true about Roberts going to Wigan for £1.5 million and whats the latest on the contracts of Dunn/Pedersen

The Roberts story would be a surprise. No word on Dunny's deal. I don't think Pedersen will be staying - he could go in the window if anyone offers a decent fee.

Who else apart from Meriem?

What sort of investment is Sam likely to get? £5m?

Linganzi should have been done by now but nothing official.

No idea on investment size, but it would be a good idea. The Trustees should see the point in putting money in and getting a return if the player is right....or hopefully players are right.

Transfer digest covering the period from 14:30 yesterday to 14:30 today. The Sam's Targets thread has been more active during this period and one or two items of transfer-related interest are noted at the bottom of this digest. nicko's activity is centred on the Nicko thread, with his transfer-related posts from there arranged below in chronological order.

nicko chat

Korea won today 2-0 in their friendly against Finland. Is Gu Ja Cheol winging his way over as promised Nicko?

I know that was mentioned a few weeks ago but it has gone very quiet. I will try to find out.

The South Korean kid at Bolton looks a player - and I am not just saying that because of the new manager.

Nicko, or is it Mrs Owen Coyle now, Heh Heh. I know there is a Hoilett thread, but thought I'd ask here before anyone bitch slaps me for posting in the wrong spot. Anyways, Mr Nicko, any news on Hoiletts contract. I was hoping he only wanted to go because he was not playing, now he is (some) I was wondering if he's changed his mind.

The good news is that he has not signed a pre-contract with any of the German cubs after him yet.

I think he is planning to run down his contract and see what happens in the summer.

From his point of view that is probably a wise move.

Rovers have offered him a very good deal, to be fair.

47er commented that this window had so far been "the quietest quiet transfer window"...

It's a quiet window because...

1 - there's not much money around, those who have it are unattractive [stoke, Birmingham and Sunderland].

2 - there has been a lot of managerial upheaval and uncertainty.

3 - the weather has been garbage, messing up several trials that could have led to deals.

Also Rovers have no money to spend as nobody has been sold - or is there changes on that front?

The manager asked for more funds last week.

We will see what happens on that front.

Nicko, portuguese newspaper "O Jogo" refers that Blackburn are interested in Belhadj from Portsmouth.

Any truth in this?

The article is about Benfica's interest in him and mentions Tottenham as another interest team.

Portsmouth are trying to get rid. Rovers were interested a few weeks ago in taking him on the cheap...Pompey think they can get £3 million from Benfica. Spurs are keeping an eye on it too among about twelve potential targets.

****************

Stuart Holden

nicko reports that Stuart Holden has now been turned down by Bolton after trial and that he may be heading for Sporting Braga of Portugal, which would put an end to speculation regarding him coming to Rovers.

Transfer tidbits

James Vaughan from Everton and Jason Roberts to Wigan were among the rumours posted on the Sam's Targets thread, with news of Wolves interest in Beattie just breaking as this digest went out:

SSN Breaking News is that Wolves are in talks with Stoke over a deal for Beattie.

So I guess we might see some movement soon.

Sebastian Eguren

There will be an 11 o'clocker.

Bit of interesting news about a new midfield target.

The little man strikes again...

Earlier than advertised...

The player Big Sam wants is Uruguayan midfielder Eguren at Villarreal.

Available on loan after a row with his coach - wants to play to stay sharp for World Cup finals.

Approach made by two of manager's friendly agents.

Cue denials and molehunts.

Benni McCarthy

Sky Sports News were reporting that West Ham were offering £1.5m for Benni:

I'm just wondering if they actually have, I wouldn't put Skysports News down as the most accurate for Rovers speculation.

Also, would Rovers be willing to accept that fee for him?

There is a fair amount of interest in Benni right now.

Rovers want £3 million, so West Ham are 'having a laugh.'

I get the feeling this one will run and run a bit yet.

£3 million for Benni - that would be a great deal.

I'd suspect those funds would be used for Beattie or is that just another one of those rumoured but never materialises kinda links !??

[...]

I suspect the same.

The Lancashire Telegraph is also reporting that Benni is attracting the attentions of West Ham:

Maceo Rigters

19.06 Reports in Holland suggest Blackburn forward Maceo Rigters is a target for a Chinese club. The Dutchman has been a fringe player at Ewood Park since joining from NAC Breda in 2007.

I've never wanted Sky Sports to be more right than right now!

There will be an 11 o'clocker.

A little development or two...

Benni wants out quickly - and is keen to join West Ham. Galatasaray are interested too, but he wants to stay in the Prem. Maybe he has heard there is a Panacea in London.

If it happens - and it is moving that way - then Beattie is the strong option. But that will depend on the price.

Rovers need to make sure McCarthy goes for about the same fee that Beattie would cost. For the obvious reasons.

Hear Eguren still being pursued. Interesting that so many people who have seen him rate him highly.

Evening.

Benni wants out quickly because he knows West Ham are chasing other alternatives...and he does not want to miss out.

The guy's heart has not been in it for some time and the manager does not fancy him.

If you get decent dough then it will be a result.

Not a Beattie fan myself, but I can see the current attraction. That move would be down to the expense involved.

No word on Dunny injury or Basturk who was a good player about seven or eight years ago.

Burnley are about to sign a keeper, by the way. Will no doubt lead to more accusations of undermining the Claret and Blue empire.

Any news on Linganzi Nicko, and is the Meriem move now officially over?

Linganzi is still down to valuations which seems strange to me. He was 'one for the future' apparently. Hope he does not slip through any fingers.

Meriem seems to have been a victim of the navel-gazing that went on last week. On one minute, delayed the next, cancelled the next. Poor chap, but really was it ever worth the fuss anyway?

Gala got Jo today..doubt they will still go for benni

Benni wants to go to West Ham. However as late as this afternon Gala were still trying to do the deal and get him on a plane on Friday.

It would be the best thing all round if Rovers get a decent price and get rid.

Mind you, we are talking about Gold and Sullivan not to mention La Brady and there are always complications with that crew.

"Midfielder Yildiray Basturk of VfB Stuttgart is on the verge of a transfer to Blackburn Rovers of the English Premier League.

According to the Stuttgarter Zeitung, negotiations between the club from the northwest of England and the 31-year-old are reported to be close to completion. On the previous day, the English newspaper Daily Mail had already reported on the planned transfer of Basturk to the team lying twelfth in the table. The deal would at first involve a loan for the German-born Turk, with a longer-term deal to be discussed only after the termination of his contract with VfB Stuttgart at the end of the season."

There will be an 11 o'clocker...a couple of things on the move.

OK.

Morten Gamst Pedersen is talking to Fenerbahce. He could sign a pre-contract and join them for free in the summer - or move sooner for a small fee. Will he fancy Turkey? Good question.

Benni is lining up his West Ham escape. He is out of the country today for some reason. Bizarrely it could be a lengthy LOAN deal because he may struggle to get a new work permit, so at the moment he may have to transfer his Rovers permit to the Hammers. No, I have no idea how that works either. There would be a loan fee of £1.5 million or more, so it is a full transfer by another name.

Incoming? Beattie still appears to be favourite although other names are being put forward.

Incidentally there WAS money made available for a young player after the manager's request following last week's week of 'self discovery.' But it won't happen, so I won't go into detail.

All I would glean from that is that the Trustees will find dough for the right player.

Curiouser and curiouser.

Oh...and the manager is out of the country too.

Why are the rest of us here?

Benni is in Spain. The reasons for that were personal.

No more detailed word on Eguren yet. Must say that Basturk seems a strange one to me.

The player that the club was ready to find money for was a special case...I think there is money there if the target is regarded as an investment. The manager was being backed in that quest.

Overnight the Daily Mail once again suggested a deal with Gudjohnsen and stated the possibility of Basturk coming on a pay-as-you-play loan deal:

Daily Mail, 23 January 2010

Blackburn eye striker Eidur Gudjohnsen and midfielder Yildiray Basturk

(thanks to ffan for the link)

Nicko, you said last night the manager was abroad, no one knew where. Do I take it that he was in Monaco trying to tie a deal up for Gudjohnsen?

thanks

I am still trying to find out where he went or where he is.

I can't see Gudjohnsen, big wages and lack of sharpness these days.

Benni will go to West Ham if they up the bid a bit and he sorts out this work permit issue which is even messier than first imagined.

****************

LT Transfer Summary

Today's Lancashire Telegraph reports that a deal for Benni with West Ham may no longer be possible, but that Galatasaray and Monaco are keeping a watchful eye on developments. Meanwhile, a deal for Basturk, it suggests, may be subject to Benni leaving for a reasonable sum.

Sunday morning update #1 of 1

Transfer digest from the Sam's Targets thread and the Nicko thread covering the period from 13:30 yesterday to 10:30 this morning. Note that nicko was briefly active on the Nicko thread this morning to report as per below. Note also that although there are a number of Rovers-related items in The People as well as The Mirror today, nicko is not credited with having penned any of the reports.

Any comments should be confined to the respective threads - DO NOT POST THEM HERE!

****************

nicko chat

The latest as I know it...

BENNI - big problems with the fee and potential hold-ups with a work permit appeal...Hammers dropping hints they will go elsewhere...classic Sullivan-Gold tactic.

BEATTIE - Fulham seem to have an interest, but again that will come down to the fee...going to be some balancing act to get Benni out and Beattie in for the same price.

ROBERTS - Wigan are bringing in some Argie striker from Villarreal for a lot of money...so I don't see that one.

ANDREWS SMITH SWAP - Not sure I see how that one works for anyone.

GUDJOHNSEN - becoming a possible because nobody else wants him...wonder why?...big wages...but could come on loan.

EGUREN - bit of a blow if he goes to Lazio, a very decent player.

ADAM JOHNSON - was the player the Trustees would have forked out for, but he seems set to sign for Chelsea...young, talented players are hard to find.

MGP - talking to Fenerbahce last I heard.

FOREIGN TARGET - I think someone was watched for the left wing position at the weekend which would be needed if MGP goes and Junior doesn't sign that contract.

Benni McCarthy

The Sunday Times reports that Benni to West Ham is a deal done at £2.5m with personal terms already agreed:

It's totally mental out there.

Will try to make some sense of it for an 11 o'clocker.

BENNI...gone on strike...but the fee is not settled...I think it will be.

BEATTIE...supposed to be the replacement, but no fee agreed.

GUDJOHNSEN...a call to Monaco has been made today...possible loan, but that depends how much Rovers would chip in for his wages...I wonder if we have a dispute about which one to bring in brewing.

MGP...Fenerbahce thing seems to be taking some time...does he really fancy it?

LINGANZI...under the radar, but I hear he could sign...instant impact? probably not.

So many porkies being told today that it is hard to keep up. The only consolation for Rovers is that everyone else is making a mess of the market too.

[...]

Any news on Basturk and Grella nicko?

Or Roberts to Wolves?

Basturk seems an odd one, he has not been on the map for some time. Good player a few years ago.

Grella? Is he fit?

Roberts seems unlikely.

And the korean? [...]

The Korean has been linked for weeks and nothing has happened. Might be one for the future, but there is still a survial battle to be won.

[...]

Is Ibricic back off the radar 24 hours later?

Nothing new to say on him in the last 24 hours.

MGP probably has to go for that one to happen...and that exit is not as close as anyone would have wished.

One or two points that may need clearing up.

BEATTIE...will want a two-and-a-half year deal...he is on around £30,000-a-week.

GUDJOHNSEN...will come down to how much Rovers or anyone else are prepared to chip into his wages for a short-term loan.

IBRICIC...has come back on the radar, but that is only a possible if MGP leaves in the window.

BASTURK...a bit of a surprise if it comes off...talented player in his time...doesn't quite fit with scrapping Meriem deal and then chasing up-and-coming players.

nicko chat (cont.)

Nicko, do the club see it as Beattie or Gudjohnsen or Beattie and Gudjohnsen, providing Benni goes?

It's an 'either or' with Beattie and Gudjohnsen. There is no way you want to take on both of them - and their wages.

By the sounds of it West Ham are sniffing round Gudjohnsen and talking about giving Monaco a bigger contribution towards the loan.

However I never totally believe anything I hear from the Hammers camp's new leaders.

11.39 Skysports.com understands Blackburn have opened talks with Stuttgart midfielder Yildiray Basturk.

Agreed Nicko, though if they were willing to give RVN 100k a week, then I'm sure they'd be willing to pay more of Eidurs wages than Rovers. I'd also say he'd prefer a move back to London than Lancashire.

Still, there's always hope that the Sam factor could swing it in our favour.

The Ruud 'offer' was very good, cheap publicity for the new regime. At the same time they were teeing up the Benni deal.

Slippery is the word.

In Gudjohnsen's case I hope Rovers have a figure they are willing to spend on a loan signing and stick to it...no point in getting in an auction there.

Yeah I would be hoping the same. Is there a loan fee involved as well Nicko or is it just a case of

paying for the majority of his wages ?

Gudjohnsen is on a huge wage which will be tax free in Monaco...so it will come down to who gives Monaco the most money.

If it is too expensive then Beattie would be the favourite option - I would imagine.

Of course, it could all go horribly wrong and you get stuck with Benni.

GRELLA...could be a loan, nobody is buying him at his age for that kind of money.

BASTURK...not sure that one is right.

Nicko - any chance of us resurrecting the Gary O'Neill option if

Benni and/or Morten are sold ?

Middlesbrough are very difficult to deal with.

As I see it, there will be one striker in if Benni goes and one left sider in if Morten leaves.

Obviously if Grella moves out too that may mean a central midfielder.

Linganzi - because he is cheap - is likely to happen no matter what.

I may be wrong here but I thought you said that we had a bit of money available for the right player?

To be honest - and this applies to many in the bottom half - there is not much money flying around for short-term fixes right now.

Any names come up for us nicko other than Beattie if he doesn't turn out to be a suitable replacement for McCarthy. Maybe it's just wishful thinking from my part. I really don't think at his age and given his current ability that he's the man to do it for us, not a lot better than Di Santo or Roberts as a target man, if at all.

Sorry, but no. I don't think it's the greatest signing, but there we go.

Nicko, you referred to the Basturk deal.

You didn't seem to think there was anything in that one when asked about it earlier. Is that one that just slipped under the radar or are the club keeping dealings closer to their chest these days.

I'm only asking in the hope that maybe we're going to sign a decent striker that you've not heard about :)

I was just shocked by it from all angles. It didn't fit the profile. But that will teach me for applying logic.

I think there is another striker's name being mentioned at the moment, but it is too bizarre to put on here or anywhere.

But it does make me think that there could be cash - from the Benni sale and possibly those ever-caring Trustees - for something else.

This is the daftest window ever. Official.

Amine Linganzi and Mehmet Topal

Is this Mr X or Mr y

More like Mr Why? Or Mr WTF?

I should point out that Mr Y is scoring goals now and Mr X signed too.

I know there has been no progress on Beattie today...and obviously Gudjohnsen is torn between two teams in London.

Heard there is another striker under discussion...it may come to nothing.

If I learn any more later I will share.

Clues? Premier League, possible loan/free, runs about a lot, difficulties connecting cows backsides and banjos.

Nicko is it Dindane at Portsmouth ?

No, that was reported in the French press but that is not the one I heard about...although he could yet become an option.

Like I say, this is crazy everywhere.

Interesting point...what is average age of a Premier League signing in this window.

Vieira, Campbell, McCarthy, Gudjohnsen, Basturk? WTF is going on?

Nicko, what has happened to our interest in Senijad Ibricic? Would the money from the McCarthy sale go toward buying him or are we no longer interested. I really hope we get this guy. Any word on Pedersen? Have Fenerbache been tipped off that he's crap and are having second thoughts?

There's obviously an interest in Ibricic because Rovers keep going back to look at him....but that position only becomes a necessity if Morten goes now...word from Fenerbahce is that he is still on their list...but he is playing tonight, so perhaps he is in no rush.

Benjani was Mr WTF...good guessing from those who got it.

The good news is he won't be coming. He is likely to go to West Ham.

nicko chat (cont.)

i dont know if it has been said by nicko, but i would expect amine lignanzi (sp) to sign tomorrow! bit of an insider for you there hughesy!

That would not be a surprise, it's been going on for some time.

Nothing in Dindane before anyone asks...and he won't be going to Bolton either.

[...]

Nicko thanks for the updates is it true what that guardian article says have we already opened talks with Benjani or is that jumping the gun a bit also Nicko any idea what Benjani would prefer I know it seems a daft question but you never know or do you think Dindane might be a more realistic target?

Benjani will go to West Ham if he goes anywhere. And feel free to celebrate!

Dindane can move if someone makes a bid. I think he will go somewhere else...not Bolton despite the Mail tale. He is ok, quite quick but one of those 'why did we sign him?' players who get moves on deadline day.

[...] do you now think we will either go for Dindane or Beattie then?

Beattie has been an option for some time now. Wonder why they keep waiting? Fee too big or wages and length of contract a problem?

I don't think Dindane is likely for yourselves, but somebody will probably try their luck.

One or two small updates.

MCCARTHY...we do realise he hasn't actually got his new work permit yet...don't we?

BEATTIE...still no bid...curious...somebody else may step in...are those cheers I hear?

BENJANI...Man City a bit upset that at least two agents have been hawking him around as a free agent...when he isn't...oh dear.

Is there a real chance that Benni could still be a Rovers player beyond January??

If he didn't get a new work permit he would have to return...but everyone has their fingers crossed that he does...the smell of burnt bridges is hanging in the air...not to mention a huge fine.

Wouldn't structuring it as a loan with a summer sell date get around the work permit issues? I think I've read that option was being discussed in the Mirror recently.

It's still got to get past the work permit people or the 'permission to work' people as they are now called. Could do with them moving faster for everyone's sake.

Not doubting your contacts and info Nicko, but don't you think that Rovers would be attempting to drag this out for another day or so, so that the fat one won't be able to line up against us on Saturday?

It's with the government officials now. They will dictate the time scale of the permit. There could be a separate arrangement stopping him from playing, but Rovers want this concluded so they can spend the money elsewhere...or give it to the bank.

BY THE WAY IT IS LIKELY TO BE ONE ALMIGHTY 11 O'CLOCKER TONIGHT.

****************

The Eleven O'Clocker

Deep breath time...

ROVERS...Celtic have come into the Morten hunt...which can only mean they are selling McGeady...don't know how far this one will go but it's an interesting development...if he goes you get more money to spend...and all of the left wing targets come into play immediately...Beattie has still not heard so I think that one is fading fast...there IS another striker on the horizon, but it is yet to be finalised - and frankly I don't know who it is but the Polish lad sounds interesting...but you need Benni to get his work permit first...it won't be Benjani either who is NOT a free despite Rovers and West Ham being told he was by some numb-nuts agents.

POMPEY...craziest day ever...could lose both keepers...Spurs in for Begovic - but there is another club trying to match them...Kaboul to Spurs, Dindane possibly to Birmingham...at £4 million he is off the Rovers radar...likely to sell anything of value and replace them with sh1te.

BOLTON...got Wilshere...three out of three...not bad...Wigan tried to nick him at the end...too late.

BURNLEY...probably best not to comment...chasing a midfielder...if I said Hayden Mullins I would be accused of destroying morale.

HULL...trying to get rid of loads to pay the wages of Naughton of Tottenham on loan.

I suspect the shambles at one or two clubs just now is Rovers-related as there is no way you should go down with Pompey and Hull in total disarray.

The Polish lad is Robert Lewandowski, mentioned in a Daily Mail piece as being a Rovers target (thanks to ffan for the link).

****************

more nicko chat

Meanwhile, discussion on the merits of signing Victor Moses of Crystal Palace led to this comment:

Sometimes the market place does tell the truth.

Moses has been available for weeks.

Three Championship sides want him.

A pal of mine played with him and says he is a luxury player. Can Rovers afford that in their style?

His agent is Tony Finnegan who some will recall is not a major Rovers fan.

Nicko, do you think its likely we won't make a 'solid' move for a striker until Benni has actually gone? Sam reckons Benni's transfer will be completed in 48 hours. If that is the case then its not leaving us much time to get a player in to take a look at, medical, discuss terms etc.

I know there is a striker lined up. The expectation is that Benni will get his permit - probably today. So it would then be a case of flying the target in [yes, I think he is foreign]. He may even have had a medical, you never know. ;)

11 oclocker tonight nicko? anything on the new striker and also do you have any news on dunn's injury.

There's too much 'noise' out there just now...what with the Screws story and all of the repercussions...

All I can tell you is that Beattie may be a 'live' target again. I think the price has dropped and Stoke have a replacement lined up.

On a side-note I have never heard so many lies told by so many desperate managers, chairmen and agents as I have heard in the past 48 hours.

Scary.

[...]

I have never known a window when so many deals have crashed for so many different reasons.

It is quite pathetic.

You could do a list right now of clubs and the positions they need. And very few of those vacancies will be properly filled in the next two or three days.

BEATTIE...the door is open again...depends if Rovers want to go through.

BENJANI...apparently Sunderland can have him for £500,000...that whole business may have to be vetted thoroughly...on, off, on again...some very odd agents involved.

ADAM...know Forest like him, possibly Middlesbrough, nice player but a bit slow.

MORTEN...hear he wants out...but not sure where to go...figures.

Saving some of the best gossip for Sunday as we will have a Terry-Bridge fest in the papers tomorrow.

BENJANI...the fee and length of contract make it very unlikely Rovers will come in...they did meet an agent in the deal last week...now the agent is talking to Sunderland who want him in case Kenwyne Jones finally leaves...that Benjani deal will include a long medical methinks.

BEATTIE...starting to think this will happen if Roberts goes...which would actually be pretty fair thinking.

MYSTERY STRIKER...there is another option out there, a deal is teed up, but I still don't have the name although I do have a suspicion about the Pole.

MOVES...loads of moves being set up and some are even going on...people leave it so late...next three days will be manic.

So nicko you are saying both Benni and Roberts could be leaving, meaning Beattie replaces the latter, and a mystery player replaces the former?

Benni is as good as gone. If Roberts does move then it would be a major result as the manager has never reallly been a fan of either.

It would make Beattie all the more comfortable a signing - one oldie for two oldies deal - that ticks a lot of boxes.

And it leaves the 'mystery' striker option open to be done too.

So he is still a mystery man to everyone outside the inner circle.

It could be he has already been named...and the rumour is being put round to put rival targets and clubs off guard.

Some lies get told at this time of the window just for effect.

[...]

Will someone have an exclusive in the Sundays if Roberts goes. ;)

Not me. I've got about 15 or 16 transfer tales...and not a new Rovers line among them.

The real mental stuff is going on elsewhere.

In your opinion Nicko, do you thinks it's possible that if Benni, Roberts and Pedersen were ALL to be sold this window, that we could afford to get Beattie, 'Mystery' and Ibricic in?? or would we only have the budget for two of the three??

The problem is when things are left as late as this that plans go out of the window. There is supposed to be someone ready to drop in if he goes. We shall see.

Benni will go. So you will probably need a striker, but could get away without one and not be fatally wounded.

However if Roberts goes you will - I believe - try to do the Beattie thing in a rush.

Morten's is a difficult case. He holds the cards in the overall long-term picture here, but the club have the say before the window. He could sign a pre-contract with someone or just let his deal run down. If he did leave before the window shuts you would be dictating the price and the decision. So that one is tricky. I don't think anyone is convinced about Ibricic unless the price is right. Hard one to do at this stage.

benjani no workrate? you are having a laugh mate! admit it, you`ve never even seen the guy play have you? he has been outstanding for city over the last few games purely because of an IMMENSE workrate!

and you`d rather have beattie, the career long `goalhanger`? you really are just wanting him because he`s from blackburn aren`t you? try actually watching the game instead of beliving in fairy stories.

Benjani is not the workaholic he was at Portsmouth. Had injuries since. And that would make a medical a must. I think that thought came and went.

I said there was loads going on...but nothing really new Rovers-wise.

Must be the case as your manager is on Tv and not exactly chasing players by the looks.

BENNI...done, seems to have been a 'delay' in the permit paperwork before the two sides met.

BEATTIE...it's about the valuation...Stoke want him out, Rovers want a bargain...so there could be a compromise...rumours of rival interest...maybe, maybe not.

BENJANI...think he is off the radar for now...thankfully.

MYSTERY MAN...trying to find out if that one has moved...no joy yet.

MORTEN...the longer it goes the less likely he moves in the window...on current form that is not exactly bad news, although you won't get a fee in the summer...hey ho...he has paid his way down the years to be fair.

Elsewhere...BIRMINGHAM chasing two or three new strikers...BURNLEY tried for a striker on loan today which is odd...PORTSMOUTH trying to keep some of their team together...ROBBIE KEANE wanted by West Ham and Sunderland...ADAM JOHNSON seems to prefer Man City over Chelsea and that could happen fast.

Lots of clubs still looking, lots of players still available.

Let the last dance at the disco begin.

All right, all hands to the pumps.

All of those who have sent me well-informed PMs on the 'mystery striker' please take note.

I hear the guy is NOT coming. Someone else has come in for him.

Trying to nail this, but any help appreciated.

Disappointing. Even though it is still not clear who it is. Possibly the young Polish striker. Nicko I thought you mentioned that we had tied up a deal for him already?

The way I heard it last week was that a deal was done and the player just had to arrive...

The way I hear it this morning is that the deal is off because someone else has signed the target.

I have to stress that I don't know who it is. The Pole was a possible, but there is another name that fits even more.

Putting the pieces together still.

The REAL significance is that Rovers will have to find another striker in a rush. Beattie anyone?

Sam has said more than once, including this morning, if we are to sign someone, it may not be a striker.

He was also talking up Beattie at the end of last week.

What managers say and what they do are two very different things.

There are/were TWO strikers on the go and a midfielder.

This is an ever-changing picture.

The bottom line is that the foreign striker who was lined up has gone 'down' in the past 24 hours.

That changes a few things.

Rovers have missed out on Brazilian Striker Ilan Araujo from French Club St Etienne...........The double deal which would have taken the Brazilian and the French lad Amine was set up last week but Benni's delay in getting him to West Ham has Cost Rovers dear...........Sure this is the Mystery Target and you can't blame Sam for trying to add a bit of Flare........Nicko is this the Man?..........Another English club in for him now...would have been a gud 'un..... Rovers 1st Brazilian i think.......

Once again...unleaded seems to be very close to the mark on things.

;)

Morning update #2 of 2

Have / are Rovers? interested still in Lewandowski? Out of curiosity, if Pompey do go bust, how does that effect the promotion and relegation issues? Do 4 teams come up, which would then have an effect lower down the leagues?

Lewandowski is an interesting player. I think Rovers have watched him but I don't know if it has gone that much further.

On Pompey...there would be real trouble if they went bust...I am told all points gained against them would be struck from the record.

Only two other teams would go down. But if they vanished completely that would mean an extra promotion place from League One and League Two probably.

There will be an 11 o'clocker.

I will say no more at this stage...

You don't have to, mate. But you are very good at keeping the suspense up. You a soap-opera writer? Well, I guess being a journo is close enough!

Something is moving...very late.

However at least three other clubs are sniffing after this guy.

It would be quite a neat signing and fits in with other events of the past two days.

So for that reason - and the fact I want to keep the story to myself - I will sign off for now.

****************

The Eleven O'Clocker

All right, wee bit early...break for adverts in a good tv programme [for a change].

DINDANE...there is an interest...only came up today...down to what Rovers are willing to pay in terms of loan fee and agents payments blah blah...also big interest in him elsewhere...Wolves keen too...plus one other that came up tonight...fuming that it hit Sky...makes me suspicious about the deal...not a bad player on loan...wouldn't be buying him straight off.

BEATTIE...with Stoke for the Sunderland game...not happy that he is still waiting...but no rival bids for him...does that tell you something?...it tells me a lot.

ROBERTS...rumours of Leeds wanting him on loan...big wages for that exercise.

MORTEN...looks like running down his deal.

Lots going on all over but we don't have the space even in the infinity that is the internet.

This Mo thing is good...when do we start seeing some of his goals for Thistle, Watford, Celtic and Rangers?

For the Burnley fans...tried for Hulse on loan and got turned down. Strange. The Mears to Sunderland thing is not right at this stage. They will sign Hutton...but probably not Benjani.

****************

more nicko chat

There have been about five or six clubs trying for Dindane which says a lot about what is out there. He is ok as a loan and he has something to play for - the World Cup.

If Beattie comes instead it's not the end of the world either.

On another note there must be 12 or 13 Premier League clubs trying to sign a striker at the last minute.

Don't despair, it could be worse.

Fortunately this is the poorest bottom half or so in the Premier in living memory.

You will live to fight another day.

By the way, if Julie Walters does not get an award for that performance then the game is bent...

Am I missing something here?

Nicko, you say rival bids for Beattie....does that mean we have bid, or some other prem club?

If it has been mentioned before, then I apologise.

There are other teams in for Beattie who may make an offer.

Meanwhile, Frank Fielding is reported in the Lancashire Telegraph to have gone on loan to Rochdale, although there is no confirmation of this on the official site as yet.

I was going to keep out of this until there is something concrete, but...

Sky get their stuff from one of Benjani's agents. So beware.

The Dindane cash/fee/agents scramble thing is not helping that one.

This late scramble all round the Premier League really is quite pathetic.

SSN just said that Fulham are in for Beattie...

Comes from Beattie camp. Beware.

DINDANE...too many agents, too little time.

BENJANI...didn't his medical take so long when he joined Man City that old Thaksin extended the deadline and broke the rules to get him?...surely you are not going down that road.

BEATTIE...other clubs in, no-one agreeing a fee.

Farce.

Just a point.

We do realise that the 5pm deadline isn't really a deadline at all.

As long as moves are in progress they can go through after that point.

11 o'clocker anyone?

Would that be anything to do with benjanis very own transfer deadlines....:wacko: ill see you at 11pm then. :rover:

That would be 11 o'clock on February 4th then...

Sounds more positive than your last post (the "farce" comment) Nicko!

No, I was just pointing out that the 5pm thing is a bit bogus. Clubs can say they are putting through paperwork and having medicals beyond then - as long as they were trying to do it before 5.

For instance, how can Adam Johnson have a full medical at Man City in an hour?

And how could Scott McDonald do the same at Middlesbrough?

And when do the permits get approved for Mido etc?

Some total comedies and farces being played out right now. And some scandalous pieces of business too.

Any more ins or out involving Rovers Nicko, or is that it now till the summer?

There are still some efforts being made about a striker but it's going to be unlikely unless prices and wages and commissions drop dramatically in the next hour or two or three or four...

The Times has Adam Johnson's transfer as still being negotiated with ManC but that we're still expressing an interest. http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/sport/football/article7010448.ece

Any hope that we're still in the running for Johnson?

The player had the choice of three big clubs...and has chosen Manchester City.

Quite a kick in the stones for Chelsea. They used to get who they wanted - now City just pick up their targets.

Reporter outside Pompey saying Dindane is having a medical as we speak at Ewood.

Nicko: Are we actually in talks with three players at the same time? So Beattie, Dindane and Benjani are all at Ewood?

BEATTIE...there has been no Rovers bid, just a lot of talk...he is at Sunderland with Stoke...Fulham tried for him but he could not get there for a medical.

DINDANE...is surrounded by agents who are a pack of liars.

BENJANI...see above.

Cannot loan deals be done after the 5pm deadline?

Premier League clubs cannot bring in any players on loan after then...but they can send them out on loan.

Now if a club goes bust and their players become available that is a different matter, obviously.

Wigan are trying to get a striker in right at the death...one of the more interesting deals if it comes off.

Moreno surely wouldnt count as a 'right at the death signing'. Long way to travel for a last minute medical, you would imagine that has been tied up for at least 24 hours

Moreno was on his way to sign for a club in Brazil, got hijacked halfway [so to speak] and agreed terms about ten minutes ago...he has not even got his visa sorted out yet.

That one was not on the horizon until earlier today. They had tried and failed for Ruben and were also in for James Vaughan.

It is called 'cutting it fine' in anyone's language.

Beattie medical at sunderland?

No.

Nicko, Keane to Celtic.. Any truth in this?

Or just more SSN ######!?

As I broke that one in September I don't really want to argue with that one.:lol:

Bit of a shambles really.

Dindane was always difficult because of the number of people involved and the tall stories being told.

Benjani should not have been considered.

Beattie is a narrow escape.

Does missing out on all of your targets ever get classified as a triumph?

I look forward to seeing the spin doctors get to work on this.

The plus is that so many others have made a pig of the job too. How can West Ham go for Keane and get Mido? How can Pompey know who is still there? Did anyone want the Hull rejects?

Bonus points to Wigan for the Bolivian and the young chap at Bolton for getting three players he wanted.

Elsewhere - is anybody better off?

There's a lot to be said for the 'dodged three bullets' argument.

But explain this to me...

What were you doing in those particular firing ranges anyway?

Nicko, I don't know whether this has been answered but is there any chance that Pedersen will sign a new contract with us?

Morten has obviously not been too impressed with the rival interest so far - Olympiacos, Fenerbahce and Celtic. So he will play out the season. There is obviously scope to keep him, but my gut feeling is that he will go.

Nicko- Is the Brazilian still around, he is a free transfer now and as he has not signed for West Ham is he still on our radar?

Ilan has signed for West Ham. No loss.
