[Archived] Megson Sacked, Coyle Takes Over

Love it.

Makes me howl. I recommend Coyley in the first place at a time when Burnley were on the verge of appointing Peter Reid. Since then the club has gone to untold heights and saved its financial skins - and those of some of their backers - with promotion and the Premier League's slush fund. I could not have been happier. It's great when a plan comes off, makes it worth your time and effort. Good people getting their day in the sun.

Now, I dare to put the stories out about a rather sad departure and it's my fault.

It's a good job I don't give one. Funny too that the Bolton fans who give me slaughterings will now be buying the Mirror and the People for their news.

I learned a long time ago that you please yourself in this game and I will continue to do so.

But there's the rub - did many Burnley fans know about your involvement? I didn't until I saw posts on here, some months after he was appointed. Perhaps some of our board members who were basking in the glow of their magnificent appointment could/should have spared a second to thank those who had helped them?

I've just had a look at the carrot mad site and it is very funny but also very very malicious towards Nicko, OC and Gartside. I've been involved with a forum that ended up in some seriously hot water over a number of members postings (I was not one of them). If I was was a poster on clarets I'd ask the mod's to issue some serious warnings before things go too far.

I don't want publicity about it, I don't want thanks and I obviously didn't seek payment. My only reward was that my pal was as good - in fact, much better - than I was telling people.

Brendan Flood mentioned it in his book. Until then, nobody knew. One reason he mentioned it was to get Phil Gartside off the hook because the Bolton fans were caning him for being the man behind it when they wanted Owen and not Gary Megson.

It's a funny old game.

Not sure I put anything libelous?

As for 18500 - I would refer you to the end of Rocky whatever it was, sue me, for what? You are welcome to a share of my debt which could quite easily equate to 18500.

Rocky 5.

"Makes me howl. I recommend Coyley in the first place at a time when Burnley were on the verge of appointing Peter Reid."

I thought Reid blew the interview? How could we be on the verge of appointing him?

Reid was interviewed and was close to getting the job. He had a pretty major backer.

Read the book.

Or the local paper who had him getting the job on the day Owen was unveiled.

It is quite funny because a number of fans told me Reid had got the job.

I haven't read Floods book but I gather from reading that it would seem surprising that Reid was close yet all the evidence at the time said he was.

Ok so Coyle worked out amazingly well but I'd rather have had Simon Garners than Reid - I do hope he is not even on the radar this time.

On a seperate note - anybody seen Nicko's Coyle article, where he doesn't want to be seen as the bad guy?

"So much so, I'll wait for Burnley to appoint Steve Davis as caretaker boss then I'll take him with me as well as the goalkeeping coach."

Yeah that'll really make you look like the good guy Owen. Brilliant thinking!

Makes the complaints about Burnley holding a Press conference and talking about successors look very hollow as well.

You use that word 'surprising' a lot.

Check the form book. Who did they want last time, why did it not happen, what have they done since.

It's not that difficult.

Simon Grayson. Wanted last time, didn't he didn't want to make the leap. Stock gone up.

Brian Laws. The same. Stock gone down.

Peter Reid. Probably wrecked his chance.

Paul Jewell. Probably wrecked his chances.

Mick Phelan. Didn't answer the phone last time. Probably same now. Just as well.

You can add in anyone who has impressed since - like beating Burnley home and away - and you know who they will be after.

"The ambitious young boss had the backing of the League Managers Association in the final push and was told he could go for nothing. But he wanted his former club to get the correct payment."

That still doesn't smell quite right to me.

The LMA contacted Owen, put their barrister on the case and he told him he could walk out immediately.

He chose not to because he wanted Burnley to get the correct figure in his contract.

Fact.

Burnley moved for the St.Johnstone manager...no problem...all grown-ups, handshales, best of pals afterwards.

Bolton move for Burnley manager - legally...problem.

How strange.

Fan is short for 'fanatic', so there is no logic, reason or rationale understanding to be found in the bulk of them. Their squad's sins are always overlooked or forgiven but the sins of their rivals are byond the pale.

The only thing that matters is that Coyley turned your club around and left it in fantastic shape.

Coyle did a great job for Burnley. They should be throwing a parade for the man as opposed to running him out on a rail.

You might get as lucky again. Despite it all, I hope you do.

You're being generous. I'm hoping they implode. Then again its nothing personal as I have the same hope as to every EPL clubs that doesn't have the name "Blackburn Rovers Football Club".

Steve Davis was given the choice to stay or go - by both parties.

He chose to go. Wonder why?

The goalkeeping voach is going as Bolton's second choice goalkeeping coach, Would you prefer he waited and was sacked when the new boss came in?

Would that make you happier?

The Sun reported yesterday the Dingles got a compromise figure of 1.5m which sounds plausible as it is exactly half way between Burnley's supposed demands of 3m and nicko's assertion that Coyle could have walked out for nothing.

The Sun reported? You really crashed and burned there.

The figure was £1 million - as per contract.

Owen was told by the LMA he could have gone for nothing. He didn't want to.

Keep your daft theories, I will stick with the reality.

Neither Davis nor the other bloke know if the new Burnley boss will fancy them - so you can't blame them for moving.

But don't expect that poaching them at this stage will make OC any more popular around those parts. As I'm sure you realise.

Cryptic - I'll get me results book out and see who we maybe looking at but at this time the only teams I can remember to have beaten us home and away last season are Sheff Weds and Barnsley ........

Both Laws and Robins? (Barnsley) as far as I am aware have not got a pro license, its difficult this tiome round as you were a championship club before, this took a while before we could appoint Ince!!

Just wish it had taken longer, Much, much longer¬!¬!

Why?

If you go back and "check your facts" as you keep advising me to you'll see that 1.5m was in fact the figure reported in the Sun.

What Nicko is saying is despite that,, the figure was indeed £1,000,000

I think we should stop being silly here, long before Coyle was appointed at Bolton, Nickos posts have been 100% correct, there is to me no arguing those facts, so lets move on and look to see who the next Dingle will be!!

Fact.

Really well Owen Coyle doesn't sign the cheques at Bolton and never will.

Fact.

And the bloke who does is a hard bitten buggger who imo would rather stick pins in his eyes than chuck away £1m for no reason. They are not Man City for goodness sakes, Bolton are hard up. As I said it doesn't quite 'feel' right to me.

Well done Coyley, very admirable, dignified and shows what a good guy he is - i have loads of respect for him as a manager and a person from snippets I have heard about him, form places as far away as Motherwell !

Best of luck to Owen - and hope he continues to prove his stock as an up and coming quality "UK" manager (obvioulsy not to the detriment of Rovers of course !)

I think Simon Davey was the Barnsley manager at the time - no idea whether he has a pro licence or not

Well, I dont think Simon Davey is working at the moment so I would suspect its not him or why as a younger guy would he not be?

The problem is, whoever they get, is trying to attract premiership players at £15k per week, I really cant see a top manager coming and accepting that, so we are left with someone with lower league experience, unproven and thats a risk, a very big risk!!

You know that, I know that and just about everybody outside of Bumley knows that. Problem is that logic cannot be applied in conjunction with strong emotion. It's like being married to the most beautiful woman in town with a figure to die for with a healthy appetite for sex and few inhibitions. Would you throw a party when she suddenly leaves you for the bloke next door whose just won 50k on the lottery?
