[Archived] Peugeot 206 Problems

Recommended Posts

I drive a T reg peugeot 206 1.4. Often when accellerating, eg after pulling out at a junction, my car will stutter and slow down like its loosing power and revs or something. Sometimes these are small stutters, but today the car almost ground to a halt, so much so I free wheeled to the side of the road. After a couple of seconds it seems to grip again and perk up and accellerate again. However there are still stutters after every gear change for a second or 2. Its worse in the lower gears 1 and 2. Dont really know how to explain it any better than that.

Anyone have any ideas whats going on.

Cheers, Ben

I had the EXACT same problems in my Vauxhall Corsa about 4 months ago and it was a hole in the petrol tank combined with an eroded hole in the exhaust. Sounds like weird causation, but thats what it was with me.

Every part of my exhaust is brand new so shouldnt be any holes. Had this problem for a good few months now. If there was a hold in the fuel tank wouldnt you notice puddles of fuel under the parked car. People on another forum reckon it may be clogged up fuel lines and fuel filter.

Sounds like the answer to me. Seems like you are not getting sufficient fuel through when you accelerate.(Like when you change gear.)You could try a tank of 'Super' fuel.

Does your motor have standard spark plugs or does it have 'coils'?

I had a similar problem with my girlfriends Renault, the only issue is that it needs to be connected to a diagnostics computer to find which coils are out. The coils cost around £40 each so it could be worth buying a set and changing them yourself.

My very first car was a 98 reg Peugeot 106 which suffered from the exact same problem you are describing. I took it to Peugeot four times and after performing a series of diagnostic on the car they assured me everything was OK. A week or so later I was pulling off from a roundabout leading onto the dual carriageway and it just chugged, revs completley died and left me in the middle of the roundabout.

Unfortunatley I never got to the root of the cause and sold it to the local garage for £800 (SUCKERS!).

My advice........ don't buy french cars.

Holes in the tank - how's that going to happen?

Could be the mixture is wrong. Maybe too rich causing flooding, or too weak causing fuel starvation. Remind me, what year is T reg and does it have a carburettor?

A bump on a bumpy road? Or erosion? No idea how, but it does happen.

General wear and tear? Inferior build quality? Erosion? Cars of this type and age have usually had some hammer over the years. however if it was losing fuel surely there would be signs.

I've had the same problem with my Astra, turned out to be a dodgy coil pack (ie the thing looking after the spark plugs, was getting loss of power and missfires. Are you getting an engine warning light?

If not, fill the tank up from BP or Esso, stick redex in and give it an Italian service

I had the exact same thing on my X reg astra. Had the car from about 6 months old and Vauxhall were clueless. It was constantly in the shop fo them to "upgrade" the engine management system, and try loads of other things. They finally figured it was the coil after about a year. That lasted ok for another year and started doing it again. Sold it soon afterwards.

I can see your problem.

You own a Peugeot 206.

No charge.

Both excellent points  Just wait till the electrics start to play up...

Might not be that relevant as it appears to be a recurring problem, but one of my mates at work had the same problem once and it was a petrol tank full of diesel

Hi Ben

its best to have your tank cleaned, and then check the correct fuel your car requires. sometimes when you using the incorrect fuel, it causes the car to stutter as if there is no fuel inside of your car. also check if your gear box is in working order, because if you not shifting it properly into 1st gear, or if it doesn’t go properly into 1st gear it will stutter and hang and then it will just sound as if its revving. as people have said, the French cars are not any good and are known to give serious problems.

If you have some sort of motor plan, its best to get it off to the dealer or somebody who specialises in sorting out car problems to have a thorough look.

I think that's your answer ben, replace them all even if diagnostics say it's only one or two. If one is down the others are due.

Steer clear from 2nd hand ones.

Cars might be a bit on dangerous side if they fit fuel tanks that Erode or wear. Forget that one.

I don't think that's the reason but it does happen. I had a van years ago that had lived on the coast before I had it and it was corroding severley on the underside due to the salt errosion. The 206 is about 12yrs old, so errosion could well be a factor.

I reckon the issue is the coils for the spark plugs.

5 minutes on the diagnostics machine will probably open a can of worms!

Depends who's operating it. No doubt it would open a can of worms, but if the operator can't interpret the results properly, it will be a waste of time.
