broadsword Posted January 18, 2010 Posted January 18, 2010 I wasn't suggesting it was Diouf, just couldn't think of another player whose surname went with a "-us" suffix.

Dan Posted January 18, 2010 Posted January 18, 2010 Joking surely? Are we now saying Nicko is to thank for us winning on Sunday? If you want to thank any outside party I'd thank Souness' old friend lady luck. What I mean is, any extra pressure on Sam to change his broken record selection and tactics is a good thing. If he thought his job wasn't at risk he may have carried on flogging his long ball dead horse. But, you are right, lady luck played a huge part! Although, some might say that the extra effort and passing the ball more on Sunday earnt that bit of luck? :-)
Stuart Posted January 18, 2010 Posted January 18, 2010 I wasn't suggesting it was Diouf, just couldn't think of another player whose surname went with a "-us" suffix. Why '-us'? I thought it was 'Brute' [brut-ay]...?
broadsword Posted January 18, 2010 Posted January 18, 2010 Ah, I got a bit confused. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Et_tu,_Brute%3F Brutus is the anglicised name. The point being that they all ganged up on him and stabbed him, even his mate Brutus. So Diouf was a good choice. :-)

Latin nouns change their ending depending on the job they do in the sentence.
my_name_is_Earl Posted January 18, 2010 Posted January 18, 2010 If Dunn wants a new deal it should be on an appearance bonus scheme. The wage bill has been suckling our transfer fund for too long now, we can't afford to keep players like Dunn, Reid and Grella in luxury when their contributions are so sporadic. Very sensible post that Topman. It's ridiculous how often some of our players are 'injured'. I don't think Keith Andrews is good enough for Rovers but i'll give him one thing, he's always fit and always ready to patch up a hole.
Sparky Marky Posted January 18, 2010 Posted January 18, 2010 Spot on. I think that will be very much Sam's arguement too - he had alot of players at Bolton who had contracts which were very performance based. Reid, MGP, Dunn, Emerton, Grella & Roberts should all be on that sort of agreement! You must be an idiot to put Brett in that catagory....by far our best and most versatile player...if his final ball was spot on then he'd be playing for someone else...
longsiders1882 Posted January 18, 2010 Posted January 18, 2010 Sam should be nice to nicko - then he could get such glowing pieces as this in the mirror: http://www.mirrorfootball.co.uk/opinion/blogs/mirror-football-blog/Why-Owen-Coyle-will-bring-the-good-times-back-to-Bolton-by-Alan-Nixon-article291573.html

rebelmswar Posted January 18, 2010 Posted January 18, 2010 Maybe but I found it quite funny that our first goal came as a result of a long ball up to Benni If Benni had not been playing that would not have been possible. History shows that he normally would have lined up with Di Santo up alone. The fact that Benni and Kalanic were both up there gave Fulham more to worry about and couldnt double team the striker.
saxo1man30 Posted January 18, 2010 Posted January 18, 2010 1, can`t beleive nicko wrote a story about sam being under pressure going off messageboard gossip. thought he was better than that, but now i`m trusting my first instincts about him again. 2, if the rumours are true and david dunn has a problem with sam as our manager then dunn can go. dunn seems to be such a bighead he can`t handle having a boss being as how he fell out with souness and left too.

In that case IF my grandmother could thread a pass through the eye of a needle then she'd play for Real Madrid. Emerton has been nothing short of a waste of skin since his debut. In fact his one and only decent match. Money for old rope

Steve Moss Posted January 18, 2010 Posted January 18, 2010 For the record - Dunn wants to stay & sign a new contract......however he wants someone to leave! That might not happen - so its then up to Dunn to decide! So now Dunn in his illustrious career had fallen out with Graeme Souness, Steve Bruce and Sam Allardyce. My opinion on the manager remains, but David Dunn perhaps should start coming under scrutiny at some point? If Dunn is the bad apple, he has to go. I didn't know about the Souness and Bruce fallings out, but there is a definite trend, if true. Or if Dunn is serious about wanting Sam to go, he needs to bang in another half dozen, make himself truly indespenable. Pouting and telling tales isn't going to get him anywhere, except off the Rovers' first team (and maybe the club). I think that will be very much Sam's arguement too - he had alot of players at Bolton who had contracts which were very performance based. Reid, MGP, Dunn, Emerton, Grella & Roberts should all be on that sort of agreement! I could very much live with that. MGP and Roberts need an electric shock to motivate them, and actually playing for thier wage may assist in that area. I think Reid, Grella and Emerton are tried and true professionals and that they'll consistently show up and play, if fit. The problem is their fitness is sporadic. The club can't afford good players, on good wages, that show up only 50% of the time. I'm not sure about Dunn, but at a minimum the same analyis of Reid, Grella and Emerton holds true. What grates me is that Tugay should have been offered a pay as played contract. Even at 40 he would have been a decent fall back, far superior to Andrews. Funny isn't it...he managed to keep plenty of egos happy at Bolton, yet suddenly he's meant to be falling out with everyone? To be honest I don't believe a word of it. Didn't Salgado say he heard good things from ex-Real team mates Hierro and Campo? He seemed to have no problem with Anelka etc too. If Dunn does have a problem then I'm pretty sure I know where the blame lies given who has previous. You can add to this Benni's comments about Sam. Despite feeling picked on, Benni was clear that he thought Sam was a good man. Which may explain their complicated relationship, mutual respect tinged with mutual aggravation. The "Odd Couple". Long may they both prosper. If you dont want to read his posts then dont but i for one enjoy his contribution here. Nicko is class. I have quite a few reporter friends in my local area, and from what I've seen of them and from what I've seen of Nicko on this board, he's conducted himself as a professional. Having said that, I think Sam is class also. He's smart man and I suspect that when he is dissing players, it has to do more with motivating them then not. Some people respond to a helping hand and a pat on the back. Others to a kick in the backside. Its Sam's job to figure out which respond to which. I do have one critique of Sam. Defending and then nicking a goal is not a universal, one-size fit all strategy. I can understand that tactic against Chelsea and Arsenal (assuming our defense is solid), but when meeting our peers and lessers we need to adopt a more slash and burn strategy. Then again, I am not an expert. (Said with all respect to Sam and only to point out that it is true that he knows more about the job than anyone on this board multiplied several times over).
nicko Posted January 18, 2010 Posted January 18, 2010 we should start a petition to ban Nicko I reckon.... Seconded. CrazyIvan Posted January 18, 2010 Posted January 18, 2010 In that case IF my grandmother could thread a pass through the eye of a needle then she'd play for Real Madrid. Emerton has been nothing short of a waste of skin since his debut. In fact his one and only decent match. Money for old rope I think that is nothing short of utterly insulting to Brett Emerton. I think he is automatically one of the first names on the teamsheet because he gives his all, he doesn't always have the best match but, when he plays on the right, we don't get many teams sucessfully attacking down that side very often. He is still one of the most underestimated players in Rovers colours. Isn't this board all about opinions? So sorry I don't conform to the populist apologost clique What's an apologost?
