[Archived] Rovers Complete Basturk Deal

Recommended Posts

What were you expecting? He wasnt going to start for the first month so to see him on the brink of the first team, virtually match fit, is as good as we could have realistically hoped for.

I am pretty sure that someone suggested at the time he was signed that, as he had played so little football in the last 12 months, it would take Basturk a long time to get to match fitness. That appears to have been the case.

I don't know when in January we signed him and therefore don't know when we started paying his wages so he could become match fit.

The questions I would ask are:

Was he worth signing?

Did we get value out of signing him?

As of now the answers are no.

I would repeat the questions at the end of loan spell and see if we get the same answers.

Yes but he was never expected to make an impact by mid march. Its the same logic as those people who said Kalinic was a waste of money last October/November time. Niko wasnt intented to play before Christmas and Basturk wasnt bought to be played before March.

If we had bought him with the expectation that he was going to walk onto the pitch within a couple of weeks then you'd have a justified reason to question his signing

That is my issue, there is no point in judging this signing yet as he hasnt played, a fact we were all aware of before we purchased him.

If you buy a player with the intention of getting him fit and onto the pitch by the end of march you're not going to judge the value of the signing before then are you.

Is this not a pay as you play deal, as such he has not played costing very little! We did have doubts about Dunn at the time so looked a good signing then, I would wait til the end of the season before calling him a waste.

Looking back at the early postings about Basturk, it appears we probably signed him around the 27th of Jan.

I can't remember at the time we signed him whether there was speculation that it would be a couple of months before he was involved with playing for the first team. I also don't know if he is on a pay as you play contract, nor do I know if it was a contract for 3 months or one to the end of the season.

Maybe he'll get some time on the pitch against Chelsea. Or Birmingham. Or Burnley. But as of right now we haven't seen him play in the first team and I can see no value out of signing him.

I think there was speculation when he was signed that he had played so little football recently that it would take almost the whole of his contract to get him match fit.

It currently looks like another waste of wages.

Yes but isn't the intention to keep him for next season if he looks like he might get back to something approaching his best?

It might well be.

What I wonder is whether a criterion for the decision will be based on playing time and if so,will 7 weeks or so of none playing time give hime enough playing time for an objective decision to be made.

I wouldnt bother debating with 47er if I were you - you're almost twice the poster he is ;)

Why are people moaning about this lad now? We said when he came in it would take him time to get fit etc (didnt he come with a minor injury?) and that we wanted to take a look at him, to see if he still had it. If it works and he is still a creative force then he will be a quality signing for next season...if he fails, he lives. Win/ win for both parties!

Depends on the terms of his contract doesnt it? We're hardly in a position to waste 5 months worth of wages on someone who isn't contributing. I find it hard to believe he's on a pay as you play deal with little or no basic salary.

I dont know - he came on a trial basis so obviously wasnt flush with offers.

Who said anything about 5 months? 2 months he has missed, we will probably see him from now on in - and we are saving on Benni McDonald's wages (By the way where is he?).

For all we know Stuttgart could have paid him some money to leave and join us.

His wages are probably v low on the rovers side, but Stuttgart are probably paying him say 30% of what he was earning there. He wouldn't leave if he was on good money to join us for rubbish money on a 3/6 month deal

You appeared to be happy to write him off until next season.

Regardless, we're safe, he needs to play, now. We've nothing to lose.

I can't believe that this guy isnt 1st on the team sheet if he's fit....he must be fit or he wouldn't be on the bench.

He is by far the best technical player we have........sometimes I wonder whats goin on in sams head....dunn is obviously not fit..(well, match fit anyway)....and you've got basturk on the bench and you don't bring him on when your getting beat...??? summat's up.

Just been building his strength up - im sure we will see him in one of next 2 home games....then it will be time to start judging the move!

I agree.

People complained about Kalinic not starting and being left out of the squad for the first half of the season.

"for £6million he should be ready to play straight away" .....we saw what happened at Sunderland away when he wasn't quite ready. Now look at him.

I'm guessin Sam knows what he's doin with Basturk and there is a reason why he's not playing in the first team yet.

:rover: nicola is aged anything from 19-22 yrs old according to the expert, basturk is a old man,he should not need bedding in time :brfc:

I'd say it would probably take him longer.

Not playing consistantly for his old club will not work in an "old man's" favour.

So Basturk will have to work harder than Kalinic to gain match fitness purely because of his age.

IMO

More often than not, if you have lost your fitness totally at that age, you don't get it back. Depends how much he had let his fitness go.

Wouldnt surprise me to see Basturk in for Nzonzi against Birmingham. We're lacking some creativity in the middle and that's what he was bought for. He's had some time to get his fitness levels up, and Nzonzi deserves a rest - he's looking tired and he's put in a very solid season for us coming in as a young lad who was really only meant to be a squad player this season according to Sam.

I never thought I'd say this but I'd favour starting Andrews alongside Basturk. He can do the running and blocking/closing down for him, leaving Basturk to pick out passes, in the way Savage did for Tugay. If we've got someone in the middle who can thread passes through to the front line it might even serve as an incentive for Sam to play 2 strikers and have more targets up front to pick out, instead of the obligatory Kalinic with 2 central defenders on him.

Whats happened to this guy, surely cant be any worse than Mr Andrews?

Was really looking forward to seeing him.

Allardyce has said he has picked up an injury-achilles?

Allardyce still hopes he will feature before the end of the season.

I believe Basturk will ideally fight Dunn for the second-striker role. I don't think he'll be one to dislodge Andrews.

Correct. Basturk is a play-maker and plays between midfield and attack. Hope he will get a chance because he was a very good player. Actually we don´t have as succeed player in the squad than he is. But no idea of his current form. If he can prove himself before season end it may even effect our summer shopping and next season tactics. Would we need so many strikers because we would have Basturk and Dunny playing second striker role? Possibly MGP also. If he doesn´t get his chance this season I wonder if he is given second chance as a trial on Summer?
