FourLaneBlue Posted May 9, 2010 Posted May 9, 2010 Thanks chaps, for putting a downer on my Sunday .... is that really the best we can do?! Hmmm...a few message board contributors pluck some names without having a clue whether Sam is currently pursuing them or not. It doesn't take much to put on you on a downer, does it?

1864roverite Posted May 9, 2010 Posted May 9, 2010 I think the 2 lads from City will be announced 30th May when they are officially released, the lad from Chorley is unknown to me but it would appear he chose us over Bolton and has been playing for a local Leyland side - possibly Euxton Villa, other than that its a bit in the dark.
Backroom Tom Posted May 9, 2010 Backroom Posted May 9, 2010 This isn't a time to be moaning but after talking about budgeting for 13th the board have absolutely no excuse not to give Sam the extra few million we bagged finsihing tenth. That money alone would nearly pay for the polish lad, so let's see them put up the cash
daren Posted May 9, 2010 Posted May 9, 2010 But then who can we sign? The transfer market is so heavily inflated that the only players within are budget are guys like Lewandowski or older players who have no resale value. Gone are the days that £4/5 million would fetch us an established player who's been scoring goals for fun in a top league. So what do we do? Do we take a shot on a youngster in the hope that he will blossom and fetch us big money down the line? Or do we go all out to sign some 30+ year old who's looking for a final paycheck? As I recall, Dzeko was being valued at £10-15 million last summer when we were looking at him.
roversfan99 Posted May 9, 2010 Posted May 9, 2010 It would be good if we could afford Carlton Cole but it says hed be £8m in the NOTW today, far too much
Mafioso Posted May 9, 2010 Posted May 9, 2010 Zavon Hines from West Ham seems an exciting Hoilettesque prospect. If he is available for free it would be great. Also Elowankenobi from Wolves seemed quite a solid left back. Petrov for free should be worth a shout too.

That money alone would nearly pay for the polish lad, so let's see them put up the cash The polish lad as well as dindane. Get rid of Di santo, Roberts, Andrews, Reid, who I believe is still on loan as is Zurab, which would ease the wage bill a bit. Rovers budgeted for 13th, yet finished 10th. Is that not £1.5 million more for placings. Don't know how much they get for 13th, but add on the extra £1.5 million.

The Rover of Finland Posted May 9, 2010 Posted May 9, 2010 West Ham´s Hines is very very quick lad. Reminds a lot of Hoilett indeed. Worth for try I think. 10th place means £2,25M more than 13th. There should be no excuse by the board Sam signing Lewandowski now. Benni money plus the few coins left could be used on winger. I can´t see Sam getting rid of J-Rob. He was the first choice again when season ended. I got a feeling Simon Davies will arrive Ewood as free agent. He is a decent midfielder and Sam wants atleast one Davies to his team.
Veevs Posted May 10, 2010 Posted May 10, 2010 If one place is worth ca. £750k, then it's extra £2,25M. They increased it to 784k per place this season
Steve Moss Posted May 10, 2010 Author Posted May 10, 2010 Sam has his eye on Fulham's left back, Paul Konchesky. http://www.fansfc.com/BlackburnRovers/story/21001/4.html

Veevs Posted May 10, 2010 Posted May 10, 2010 Sam has his eye on Fulham's left back, Paul Konchesky. http://www.fansfc.com/BlackburnRovers/story/21001/4.html Second left back so far.. hmmm maybe we are looking to offload Chimb and get in a dedicated left back. Odd as that would be the third position I would be strengthening.. still Sam has yet to be proven wrong.
Iceman Posted May 10, 2010 Posted May 10, 2010 not sure I agree with Sam looking at defenders, when we have both Givet and Olsson for that position. If Sam wanted a left back, then a young player from the reserves or academy he could have a look at it. Our defence has been solid, and with the introduction of Jones and Hanley, we are looking good. Its still a striker and midfielder we need, and possibly a MGP replacement. I would reckon 2 strikers, and perhaps another left winger, and a central midfielder
47er Posted May 10, 2010 Posted May 10, 2010 Ironic isn't it? We are short in certain areas but appear to have 5 quality centre-backs! Two of them up and coming of course but still. Bit like London buses, you wait ages and 5 turn up!
Brfcrule1 Posted May 10, 2010 Posted May 10, 2010 First off today well done lads yesterday really made my day winning at Villa park and gaining the extra dosh. Now don't shhot the messenger just a suggestion for the striking role. How about Shabani Nonda if he is still on a free transfer wages would be quite small could be worth a punt. Although now we have the extra 2.25M for finishing tenth no real excuse not to now try for Dindane/Polish Lad. I do believe although he was talking to Bolton the deal is far from done could be worth hijacking it as he has proved a regular goalscorer in the EPL. Also Fuller is a good shout strong,Muscular would replace Roberts and is much better all round player as well as good goal scorer which Roberts isn't. Only trouble is wages but worth a punt.

Just makes me wonder if Sam has something up his sleave given his targets. Does make me wonder if JW is thinking of releasing those long talked about extra funds for a good youngster, especially given a top half finish on no funds (I may also of been sceptical after Sams time at Newcastle). I can but dream at Lewandowski, Dindane, Ledley, Canella and a central midfielder would make me a happy bunny (can dream higher but realistic).

gumboots Posted May 10, 2010 Posted May 10, 2010 You mean one who plays better as a CB and the other who plays better as a midfielder? getting the back 4 right is always a manager's priority if he wants to survive in the premier league. Look at the relegated teams. It's not just or always the case that they can't score; it's a poor defence that gets you relegated. Liverpool and Villa have done better than their overall play would suggest this season because they have fairly reliable defences. Birmingham finished above us because of the number of games where they scraped a one nil win. Being able to keep a clean sheet is vital, and, despite our defence looking reasonably sound in some games, in others we have conceded goals that we should have done better with and might have done with a specialist left back.
mattyc2422 Posted May 10, 2010 Posted May 10, 2010 I reckon we have a reasonable squad compared to previous years. We must, must, must hold on to: David Dunn Chris Samba Steven N'Zonzi Niko Kalinic Phil Jones Junior Hoilett Martin Olsson Amine Linganzi Grant Hanley Depending on how many fringe players depart, I can see us adding another striker (or two), winger and attacking central midfielder. I think another priority is to keep adding youth players that have the potential to improve.
AJW Posted May 10, 2010 Posted May 10, 2010 IF we are looking at left back's it would suggest allardyce see's Olsson playing more left wing and therefore being Pedersens replacement anything up to £2m for a experienced english left sided player would be good business in my eyes

Its still a striker and midfielder we need, and possibly a MGP replacement. I would reckon 2 strikers, and perhaps another left winger, and a central midfielder Givet has done a solid job at left back, but he's playing out of position. Olsson has shown that even though he can do a job at left back, it isn't his strongest position and can be found out. A new midfielder and striker would be the priority and if there's a left back we can pick up on a free (like Aleksandar Lukovic) or for a small fee then we should.
LeChuck Posted May 10, 2010 Posted May 10, 2010 Getting rid of Chimbonda and bringing in a dedicated left back back makes perfect sense. One of Chimbo's plus points was that he could cover centre back, but Jones and Hanley have made that redundant now, to the point where he is simply third choice right back. At least he'll always have that goal against Burnley to his name, I do hope he moves on this summer though.
Amo Posted May 10, 2010 Posted May 10, 2010 Snap up Konchesky and let Fulham have Andrews for a knockdown price. That way everyone's a winner! ....Except Fulham, of course.
