[Archived] Potential Summer Transfers (2010)

Personally not a fan of Guti. He is well past his best (and he wasn't ever that good). 70k a week is ridiculous in the present climate. If he comes here it is for the money. I don't by the personal challenge angle one bit.

How anyone thinks we can justify paying over 100k to two ageing ex Madrid players is beyond me.

1) Justifying paying 100k+ a week for two of the longest serving players at real madrid and guti was still getting in the team this year and kept kaka out of the team for a period of time while Raul is possible one of the best goal scorers in La Liga.

2) Getting rid of the earners who are not getting in our team, want to leave or are injury prone: steven reid (even though i think he is a brilliant player), zurab, MGP as he was waving bye bye at villa, Maceo Rigters, Yıldıray Baştürk did not get time to prove himself, and one or even two out of Chimbonda Diouf and Grella. All of these would make way for both of these signings and would get rid of alot of dead wood within our squad that have higher wages than our younger players who are starting to have an impact

3) Getting two Big names will improve ticket sales, even though it may be a small increase, and will have a positive impact on developing our youth squad making Rovers more appealing to younger players with potential

4) If you pay £4 million plus 40k a week for 3 year, for a player that doesnt have the same quality as these two, then it will cost nearly £11 million when for a similar price maybe slightly more you can have Raul and Guti for 2 years. who could also get some players intrested in Blackburn Rovers and some buyers that are right for our club.

therefore with getting rid of 5-6 players of the wage bill will also means that the two free transfers allow for other signings with a slightly smaller budget for example Joe Ledley free if Cardiff lose to Blackpool and another striker around £2-3 million so say that Guti never had it and there is no way to justify paying 100k plus is rubbish.

Have there been any mention anywhere that Raul is leaving the Bernabeu as well? I think he's very close to the all time scoring record for Real Madrid, and probably won't leave unless he's forced out. Besides, who would force a legend like him out of there when he's so loved by the fans?

I'm curious how Sam envisions playing Guti. Even if he plays in the pocket the need for a better target man than Kalinic is there. Guti's through passing is excellent so a pacy striker who could preferably hold the ball up as well is what's needed, as well as finish - but they don't come around too cheaply.

Maybe if he gets his €12m pay out.

Does buying big name players at the end of their career have a positive influence on ticket sales and are there any statistics to prove it? I'm not for or against the signing of Guti but a lot of those who are for it suggest it will put bums on seats. Will it? If I wasn't a Rovers fan I certainly wouldn't bother getting a ticket just to see someone like that play. I'd only be going to Ewood if I fancied seeing a match and would go then whoever Rovers had in the team or whoever they were playing. But I know others think differently and so I wonder i one player would have that big an influence.

If Raul came to Rovers im pretty sure id be making the trip up to Ewood on more occasions. If Raul joined my local team id definately go down for a watch.

i think that many parents would bring there kids to see Raul and Guti play in the flesh, how many times ???? would they become Rovers in the process ????

It's got to be worth a shot. IMO it would certainly put a buzz around the place.

We may even get a top 6-7 finish from it. Circa 3m in additional revenue, Lovely Jubley. ;)

Just reading The People now, how much do you think Everton want for Yakubu, Nicko? What are his wages like?

Also I take it it is your piece on Klasnic also, £60,000 a week, he's looked quite good but not that good!

Yakubu is on a big money at Everton...and they will want a decent fee...not Sam's type...can't move about enough.

Klasnic is on huge money at Nantes...decent goalscorer...but not a great overall game.

Nicko, how far along are talks with Guti and is Raul also a "reality" or are we just in for his blonde side-kick?

No more word on Guti apart from what appeared this morning.

Surprised to see the Star on Sunday had it too...

I don't think Raul is too likely, but Guti seems to be the one they have a chance with.

Guti will have to make a decision soon. So I would expect the next step is a meeting with the manager or a visit over here to have a look round.

Salgado is a key asset in this. He went out of his way to meet his old mates last week in Madrid. Good for him.

Aren't the 2 linked? If we can play these guys won't we be more likely both to entertain and win? Would'nt supporters be appreciative of that and turn out in bigger numbers?

Short term Raul and Guti would provide unbelievable publicity for Rovers, but come this time next year, would the club still have enough financial clout to be able manouevre or restructure the look of the first team again.

Aha! So it was Guti, after all! It would be a sensational bit of business by the SAS (Sam & Salgado) and I'll support anything that helps raise the profile of the club. My only concern is how much his wages will set us back and how it will affect our other transfer dealings.

Didn't we sell our player of the season last year just to cover Salgado's pay-packet?

Perhaps but that's a longer term thing. better results do generally bring more people through the turnstiles. But would their very presence, before we see what results are like, make the kind of difference being suggested. I don't know and I'm open to be persuaded either way but I'm just curious to see if it's a proven or provable fact or if it is just one of those urban myths that proliferate in football.

the key is not to be naive into believing anything is proven

I suspect most people are going to have less income over the next few year so id be surprised to see crowds improve. The arrival of a star or two may get us more publicity and more television appearances.

Guti is a risk for me at the wages being described. He has never struck me as being that great and has generally been a squad man at Madrid. I don't think neutrals will be flocking to see him.

Raul is past it and has been for a few years. He also has a massive ego.

Id prefer us to try and sign younger players who can develop rather like Coyle seems to be at Bolton

Not overly sure about people worrying about wages for Guti..

What can you buy for 1.6m and 35k a week wages..... (thats roughly what we could get as an equivalent if we had to pay fees on top)???

Compared to a player of that standard, Guti who kept Kaka out of the Real squad for chunks of last season is a snip.

In regards to what else he would bring.. prestige, a playmaker that we have been crying out for, more people at the ground, more shirt sales (how many on here have already said they are getting one), someone for the kids too look up too etc... not many of Sams swan song players have failed, Campo et al at Bolton and Salgado here (who is already bringing in good youth players).

And gumboots, I do believe it effects the numbers at the grounds.. would you rather go to a match to watch Keith Andrews or Guti?

There was certainly no myth about it at PNE back in the 40's and 50's. I clearly remember back then that every supporter was asking anyone and everyone they met on the Thursday and Friday before each home game "Is Finney playing?"and if the answer was "No, he's injured again" it would mean around 15 to 20k less on the gate that week. I kid you not... that is the plain unvarnished truth.

Guti was never a world class player in the mould of Zidane, Ronaldo, Messi. But he is an excellent player who has always stood out for Real whenever called upon. His technique is excellent, his fight and vision also are up there. He is the type of player who would be head and shoulders above our other players in terms of pure "talent".

Two steps up on MGP for sure in that central role.
