[Archived] Potential Summer Transfers (2010)

Um, I don't disagree that we're crying out for a playmaker, but we DO need a striker. We only have Kalinic and Roberts, atm.

Imo we should spend big this season on the creative player, loan in a striker and modify the system to best exploit Niko's strengths.

I think we'll get better value for our meagre budget by doing the above - strikers usually carry the highest fees, and there aren't many (if any) in our price range who can play the lone striker role effectively with Prem experience ....

I agree that a promising midfielder would make the world of difference. You only have to look at Bentley's contribution to realize how Santa Cruz notched 20+ goals in his first season. Kalinic has a bit about him, but our tactics and our lack of quality in midfield doesn't give him a chance. If only we had someone who could put their foot on the ball and make something happen.

Spot on.

We do not have a midfield player with anywhere near the quality that Bentley has. When Bentley left you could see how much an impact he had when Roque's goals dried up. Biggest mistake we made in recent years was not replacing him.

Exactly what I was saying to a mate last night.

Spot on - Benjani isnt a bad player & works his arse off, however he isnt a natural goalscorer - something we need.

Caciedo would be a better option....Or Vela on loan....or Fletcher from the dingles

I think that Caciedo would be a good bit of business. I've always liked Carlos Vela and think that he has the potential to be quality player, who just hasn't been able to get a good run in the Arsenal team. He would add creativity, pace and goals to our team and would be worth a loan offer.

Nicko, although you mention Benjani being high up on the list I would have thought our other targets would be higher up the list inc: Bance Dindane's bro in law,Tresor- The african player of the year,Janko,Beattie would be much higher up the list have we approached any of their clubs about these players?. Is Sam likely to approach these better players before even considering the cringeworthy Benjani?. Is it also known Janko, Bance,Tresor what fee their clubs might want and what their wages are likely to be?. Surely the other targets are within budget & a bid needs to be lodged before even considering Benjani.

p.s. Is there going to be an 11'oclocker tonight any movement on Guti?.

There will be a small bit of news at 11...will try not to mention again too strongly...but he is looming large.

Looming large? Zigic?

I personally would not mind Benjani at all, good player especially on a free transfer- I am assuming that we are purchasing two strikers and if we sign Benjani may mean we sign another up and coming player.

With our small transfer budget just who the hell are you expecting to sign for us?.............

If we have £30k-£40k to throw at Benjani every week, I think it could be spent more wisely.

Mcarthy had the same service, back in the day when Bentley was pinging them in from the right and Pedersen from the left.

Or Henry?

http://www.dagbladet.no/2010/05/22/sport/fotball/premier_league/thierry_henry/erik_soler/11819873/

-In Norwegian, but basically says that West Ham are prepared to offer Henry 70k a week - With Pedersen on 50k, Thierry Henry on 20k more wouldn't be too bad, I reckon. (Apart from the salaries at Blackburn spiraling out of control - Did anybody say "Portsmouth"?)

The small update 11 o'clocker...

Guti is taking up most of the attention just now and basically the order is to find out what he wants to come over...

So until that is finalised one way or another there is unlikely to be any money spent on other areas.

Hopefully the Guti thing can be settled one way or another fast. He has been told he can go, so now it's down to him where that is.

Big Sam is serious on this idea, the compromise with the money men is that he pursues this before he does anyting else.

Despite the fact he is 'on holiday' it would only take a phone call and a flight to arrange a meeting.

Obviously if this gets done - and that is still a major 'if' - there won;t be much money left for a striker - unless someone else goes.

So that's the shape of it - even if it is not world-shattering news.

The confusing bit is Nicko that have not saved around 60-70k a week from Reid and Benni plus about 10k for Di Santo, 80k plus around 5 million from prize money, how much does Guti want!!

This is ridiculous. Okay, let's see: We've sold Steven Warnock, sold Benni McCarthy, sold Paul Gallagher, finished three places above our budget, received new income from the PL, and we can only afford Guti on a FREE transfer!?

What is going at our club?

Guti would take plenty of cash. The first thing needed to establish is whether he wsnts to come or not. If he does then you can talk cash.

Once you know how much cash then you have to make some big decisions...

This is a major playeyr to chase, so it's udnerstandable that you would put other things on hold. Just not for too long.

I'm sorry but if there is any truth in what you have said then it's a complete farce.

Guti could be a nice addition to the squad but there are loads of question marks over him, age, wage and whether he could settle being the main ones. It seems foolish to me to spend so much time wooing him when we have other areas as well that need addressing.

I hope this deal never transpires if you are correct in your assumption that Guti would take up most of our budget and ultimately leaving peanuts for a striker or two.

This transfer window has disaster written all over it if you are correct.

So much time? It is May for crying out loud. Plenty of time left to be doing our business.
