[Archived] Potential Summer Transfers (2010)

Recommended Posts

So much time? It is May for crying out loud. Plenty of time left to be doing our business.

Don't you know there is only two and a half months to the start of the season, and we are supposed to sign a Real Madrid star in the space of less than a week

Problem with Guti is that his wages would be massive......for that reason id leave him alone.

Id rather we signed a young potential like Ledley and have money left for a striker.

Agree about the wages, but he would give us some great quality in midfield. I would stay away from Ledley, he was poor again today, he scored but was poor, his distribution was woeful.

we have enough young potential

if the naivety starts to show we'll be in trouble

The worry of course is that we only have 2 strikers at the club (Roberts and Kalanic), I would say that we need to bring in 2 more so as to have adequate cover up front.

What we should have done is backheel Pedersen out the door, put the alleged £6m plus we're p*ssing up the wall on his wages towards signing Ledley and Guti, and then tried to get a loan striker and/or free transfer.

It's all catch 22.

We sign a quality, experienced player for our midfield which has been crying for exactly the type of player he is, but at a large cost both financially and to strengthening the team.

OR

We sign a couple of players, who would be most likely of a lesser quality (Benjani/Beattie) but we will be safe knowing we now have a couple more options up front.

Don't be silly, there's no way on God's green earth we could have ever replaced Pedersen...

The club should be scouring the globe for any young prospect with a glint in his eye. People are always saying it would take a fortune to replace Pedersen. Hello? Pedersen originally cost £1.5m from the Norwegian league. Tell me, would you rather take a chance on inexpensive young players who could be worth their weight in gold, or con-artists like Pedersen, sucking the wage bill dry for minimal effort?

Guti is exactly the type of player we have been needing for many, many seasons now. Only question is if we can get him to gel into the side like Salgado did.

Upfront we need someone to cover for Roberts and Kalinic, so we shouldn't be spending big money there anyway.

Hello!!

When Souness signed Pedersen it was because the globe had been scoured and MGP had a glint in his eye. Rovers took a chance on a player who has since PROVEN to be worth his weight in gold - 6 years and hundreds of games, great ratio of goals and assists.

Why do you hate him so much??? Is it because he's not an inspiring catch on a computer game?

He had a bit more than just a glimmer - he was voted the best player in the Norwegian league. Not the highest accomplishment, but still.

This Guti thing is a joke. We're wasting very valuable time and potentially valuable money on a transfer deal that, even if it really works out, will hardly be totally season changing. Allardyce makes a striker priority, but then switches that to "I'd like to have another typical Allardyce signing". Will this be yet another wasted transfer window?

Can I please become a Rovers scout? I'd love to pick up a cheque to sit on my thumb for all of the season. I bet that I could point Allardyce in the direction of premier league flops looking for another club or old foreigners looking for one last deal before they take up golf full-time.

Wait wait...so because we have no money we are going to offer 40k+ to a midfielder the wrong side of 30? This when we were all told that signing a striker was "the priority". I'm not expecting us to spend millions, it just appears to be clear that we have no a plan here, not one that was thought up weeks or months ago at least. We should have come into this summer with a clear plan in mind and several affordable targets for each position and pursued them in an order of greatest need. Instead of this we had a go at a couple of strikers, found out one was a bit too expensive and weren't sure on a couple others we'd been messing around with and have now turned our attention towards a midfielder who's form has been slightly inconsistent and questionable for probably the last 5 seasons.

If this club wants to consistently get sympathy for having no money then it is has to start acting like a club with no money. Sign young players, look to make a profit and try and reduce the wage bill. We say that is what we are going to do, but it appears that we've drifted far away from that plan this summer.

The Guti transfer makes ZERO sense for this club. The fact that we seem unclear has to who we should be going for striker-wise is laughable. Even more to the point, the fact that a striker was the priority this summer when we spent 6 million on a striker last summer and have obvious short-comings in the midfield, short-comings that Guti is unlikely to address, is seriously questionable.

For a few seasons now poor transfer windows have been accepted and forgotten. What people need to realise is that it is in these three months that the long-term future of the club is often decided. A wrong transfer or contract and that is millions gone for the club and it takes several windows for us to address the problem again.

Maybe all this speculation will be wrong and we won't waste all of our budget on an aged midfielder who probably isn't up to the challenge and a striker who certainly isn't (see Dindane, Benjani, Beattie, etc.), but sadly all roads point to disaster at the moment.

No Eddie, what YOU and others need to realise is that we have F all to spend.....

Did you read what I posted? I'm not asking us to go out and spend millions, simply asking why we didn't have several identified targets and why are we then spending a sizable chunk of our budget on Guti? No money doesn't mean offering Guti 40-60k a week or whatever it will be.
