With regards to the whole striker thing, I have a sneaky feeling Sam will run with his 3-5-2 formation next year which he tried when the season was finishing. Salgado and Olsson both fit the wing back roles to a tee, we can then operate with 3 centre back. Having 3 at the back means only one holding (Fonzi and Mr X) and 2 more attacking minded players (Gamst,Dunn,Guti?) That leaves Kalanic and Mr Y up top with the likes of Junior (playing in his more favoured role uptop) and Roberts to cover the strikers.

This can easily slip back into a 4-5-1/4-3-3 again depending on how the game goes with a substitution.

So possibly Guti, Mr X (defensive/box to box midfielder) and Mr Y (a striker).

Pity because he was 2 in 1, capable of playing up-front or wide on the right. We desperately need pace on that right-hand side and I was hoping he'd provide it. I know we have Hoilett but whether he'll develop to the level we require is unknown. Still clearly Dindane is merely after the most money he can get and he's therefore better off with someone else.

And which amongst us would not do the same in his position?

If Guti is the one Sam is aiming for, 2m+ in wages for one year at least, (roughly what Salgado came for) then we have agents, signing on fee, not much left for the goal machine. :(

I'm not doubting anyone's figures, IMO it just does not stack up.

We''ll see, I just wish the Guti affair was either done or dead.

Luca Toni linked with a move to West Ham.. Where are we? Cant we have another Toni-summer? :)

Here here, would suit both Sam and the Premiership me thinks, only 32 (at least till Weds...) so could get a couple of seasons from him...

Imagine Salgado, Guti and Toni in Rovers dressing room to compliment the youth coming through...

Nicko - any word on whether he's on the radar?

I think we will end up with benjani or beattie plus a few unknown players like nzonzi etc. Doubt we will get guti though but he's the only player we have been linked with so far who would make an impact on the team in my opinion. Don't think he will choose us but I really hope he does.

No point inhaving someone to create chances if there's nobody to put the ball in the net, and I've seen little from Benjani to suggest he can do that. May be wrong, but if so then show me the evidence that's he's a regular 10 goal a season man, let alone the 15 or so we probably need

A ten goal man would be a world of improvement and would have had us at 9th.

A pretty accurate guess too. Common sense if we didnt cut it by £5m last season, then we still have that £5m problem this season (which as mentioned in the budget we get extra TV money this year - so that effectively goes to service that £5m cut....bringing down our % of wages/ turnover etc).

Yes. Which means one decent signing and then a freebie, like Benjani.

The wage difference should be solved, at least in part, when Reid is off budget and if Zurab, etc. go (if they do).

Perhaps Sam sees Kalinic as the goal-scorer, he just wants someone who can do the work and create abit more space for him to get those chances!?

Couldn't Roberts do this?

I too think that it is outrageous that Sam has decided to take a holiday in the closed season, especially when he has decided to leave his mobile phone at home and there will be no internet connection anywhere in the vicinity of his villa.

And when should he take his holiday? During the pre-season? Sam's timing appears to be good, not least because it appears that he left JW a priority lisst and JW appears to be keeping to script. Since it appears that Sam and JW communicate well, I'm not worried about Sam's holiday.

Sam originally said only 1 or 2 players to round out the squad. With MGP in, I suspect that he's only looking for one, with JW trying to offload a few to save the wage bill.

Luca Toni wants £80,000 a week and Bayern want a £1.5 million tranfer fee.

Surely the West Ham link is just comedy journalism now all the Italian people have left the club.

West Ham will go back to using third party agents which English clubs love to use, compared with the rest of Europe.
