Ambrose to QPR At that value I reckon he sounds like a bargin and a half..

Ambrose is a Championship player being chased by two Championship clubs...and one SPL club.

I think that says it all.

IMO Ambrose was a good Premier League player before Charlton were relegated, and now he's one of the top players in the Championship. I definitely think he's capable of performing at this level and I'm very surpsied that he isn't being chased by Premier League clubs. I really think he's be a bargain for £750k, though we would really need to shift Andrews / Grella first.

If we are looking for someone from championship it should be O´Neill. He was once very good at Pompey but has lost it. No idea how much Boro would want for him.

I think I remember seeing him on a list of free transfers for the coming season? I haven't actually seen him since his early Pompey days though, how would you describe him as a player?

Agree with you there.. and disagree with Nicko..

He has been very consistent as a player, works hard, takes a good set peice, has way more skill than the likes of andrews, is cheap and would jump at the chance of moving to the premier league.

Sure he isnt "world class" but I reckon at 750k he would do a diamond job, suprised he has been overlooked by premier league teams, but then again not many are looking for midfielders atm.

[Edit] Just to add you can discard 15 of the premier league teams as they have enough cash to bring in better euro based players and we are loosing at least 2 probably 3 midfielders (judge, basturk and Reid).

If we can afford Guti but not a striker then i would be seriously concerned about the club's fortunes next season if we brought Guti in.

Do you really want to go into the new season with just two strikers? If Niko gets injured then we have to rely solely on Jason 'can't hit a barn door' Roberts, a prospect i would be seriously dreading.

If a move for Guti means we can't afford anyone else then its a no-brainer, forget Guti and look elsewhere.

I wouldn't say we were 'losing' 3 midfielders as Reid, Basturk & Judge haven't really been anywhere near the first team and certainly haven't been part of Sam's future plans. Basturk was available and was brought in to see if he could break into the side but that didn't come about largely due to an injury he picked up on arrival at the club. Reid has been surplus to requirement for some time, and Judge just isn't good enough.

My opinion is that Ambrose is nowhere near good enough. We've all seen clips of what he can do and he had a cracking game the other week against Cardiff but if he could play like that consistently he'd already be in the top flight. He has had the chance with Ipswich, Charlton & Newcastle but was not good enough. He was an average player in a below average side at Charlton. I think if we got him in we'd have another Andrews on our hands, o.k (at best) in the lower leagues but he'd be lost against top flight opposition.

Gary O'neill would be a very decent signing, despite the fact he plays in the championship. To say that very few potential signings are worthwhile from the championship is a little short sighted. Comparing the championship to other second tier leagues around europe would prove that its a relatively decent standard. Lets not forget that Adam Johnson was in the championship for part of last season as well as players like Dorrans, Enrique, Nolan and Adam who could/will all make an impact next season.

Sorry but Ambrose is streets ahead of Andrews and has far more experience at this level. At Charlton he was a decent Premier League midfielder who had the ability to perform brilliantly on occasion. Andrews has yet to put in anything better than an adequate performance for us and, frequently, has been utterly dire.

We are not in the position of replacing squad players so looking at Ambrose to replace Andrews is ludicrous. We need a creative midfielder and a striker, why go out and buy a Championship player to replace one of our squad/fringe players? "Only £750k" is a large chunk of our transfer kitty and not a move closer.

You also need to open your eyes, Andrews has put in one or two adequate performances, against Arsenal for one. Not perfect, not awesome but adequate.

However this is the potential transfers thread NOT the Andrews thread!!! IMO Ambrose would certainly be a step backwards.

Sack off Chimbonda. Hes hopeless. Id much rather have Aurelio for free plus wages and sell Chimbonda for cash. I bet his wages are a fair bit higher than jacobsens also.

I do agree though, if bringing in a full back etc takes any money away from a striker/att mid transfer then stay clear. If we can improve the defense by signing someone on a free and selling a lesser full back (Chimbonda jacobsen) im all for it. May inadvertantly give Morten a kick up the arse as it would free up ollson to compete with him for left wing full time.

Any different targets for a Striker Nicko?

And none of them have bothered with Ambrose despite the fact that he is with a club in administration and can be pillaged...

Have we got any different and likely targets for a Striker Nicko, instead of the Benjani, Dindane , Beattie etc rubbish ?

Comparing it to the Premier League is a better option. Massive gap.

4 Ex prem players & 1 ex scottish title winner!? Not the best examples!

Hardly your normal championship players are they?! Like Den says - compare the prem....who in the championship (who is within our budget) could we sign that would be a good signing & also that would slot into our starting 11?!

I am aware that they are ex-prem but it further highlights the point that just because you play in the championship doesnt make you a average player. Lets not forget that typically the managers in the championship are not at the same quality level as managers in the premiership, implying that there could be gains in players performance simply because of the fact they are in the premiership, coached by better staff and playing with better players. Whether that is true is impossible to suggest.

Comparing it to the Premier League is a better option. Massive gap.

I understand that but would anyone complain if we signed a midfield player who scored x amount of goals in the french second league, or would we just wait to see whether they can make the step up. I have seen enough of the championship this season to know that there are some good players in the league.

I'm definitely in the pro Ambrose camp here. I always liked him when he was in the Premier League, but his career did stutter a while back. He looks like he's back on top form now though. The record of good midfielders stepping up from the Championship is actually pretty good. QPR are getting a bargain at £750k.

I hope Allardyce is taking a look at Aurelio, he could be a perfect solution to the 'proper' left back issue we have. Liverpool also used him in central midfield sometimes. If he could pass a fitness test he's worth a gamble on a free.
