Wont we need 2 new strikers? I said earlier getting in the polish lad, guti and a left back would be good..

But still slightly worried that 3 strikers (Roberts, Lebo or other and Kalinic) wont be anough.

As for midfielders.. we have plenty of those dont know why we would need more if we land Guti.

GK - 3 Good main and good backup

RB - Salgado, Jacobsson, chimbonda.. etc

CD - Samba, Jones, Nelson, Givet, Zurub, Hanley.. plenty

LB - Chimbonda (not really a LB) and givet (more a central def)

MID - Olsson, Peders, Guti (Hopefully), Dunn, NZonzi, Diof, Emerton, Linzaghi, Doran and err Andrews

FOR - Hoilett (young), Kalinic (young), Roberts (cant hit a barn door) and another

Sitters: N'zonzi, Keith

box to box: Gamst, Emerton

Hole players: Dunn, Guti

We all know Keith isn't good enough, so that leaves N'Zonzi. If N'zonzi gets injured then i can see us in some serious trouble next season when it comes to sitters. Very sceptical that Guti who started out as a striker, then was moved to an attacking minded creative midfielder will do a job as a sitter.

Pedersen isn't good enough either contrary to what some people believe on here, Emerton doesn't seem to feature much in Sam's plans these days and rarely in central midfield- though i do think he should be given a try there.

Dunny is injury prone and with our current formation relying totally on him to have a good game or be fit if he is missing we struggle. Loads of questions marks over Guti as well- if he comes.

Whilst we have strength in numbers our midfield is shockingly poor.

Got to agree with you. Too many of our midfielders either aren't good enough or are injury prone. We consistently overlook the improvement of this area of the team and although the potential signing of Guti would help, we will continue to struggle in this area of the field.

Nicko,

any word on possible outs apart from Grella? I am hopeful that Zurab, Rigters and one of Brown/Bunn will go this summer. Not sure what they'd be on collectively per week (30K?) but as they say, every little helps...

I've heard rumours of Roma joining the race and being willing to pay 6 million for him, not sure if it's in GBP or EUR though.

Oh and Priorities as in plural, so that means Guti and another then yeah ? :P

Roma don't want that polish fella,Genoa and Parma are the Italian clubs with an interest in the Pole.

That Di Santo guy would be perfect for Serie A.

No Keiths not good enough, but what should we do with him?? Until someone comes along and buys the lad we are stuck with him, Sam also plays him and considers him a squadie. If we want to shift him we won't do it by chucking him in the reserves. N'zonzi, touch wood, seems to be able to stay injury free and solid, so having Keith as his number two means he won't see that much pitch time, but why pay him 20K a week to do bugger all?

No Pedersen's not good enough and yet he's been in the top 20 assister's in the league for the last 6 years . He also just signed an new 4 year deal so guess what, like Keith we are stuck with him, regardless of what you feel. So should we put this consistent asisster on the bench for his 30-40K a week, wasting more of our 90% turnover??? no play him, he can do a job and a far better one than you think.

Emerton should be given a role in the middle, I agree he doesn't do it for me on the right flank in either position. I can see him working up and down but most defintly not as a sitter. Perhaps he'd run with the ball a bit more in this area as Dunny's really the only one we have who does this.

Why on earth would we sign Guti to play as a sitter??? In the hole or in central midfield yes, but defence is not his strongest point, far from it. He'll most likely play in the hole or in central midfield, no deeper.

Dunny again has signed a new deal, like the others no-one is lining up to sign the lad, so what do we do? We try and keep him fit get in a decent back-up (Guti will more than do the job if he's injured) and play him. He was our top scorer and whilst I agree he can be rather injury prone, no-one is going to buy him.

I just don't understand what you want the club to do Ribble? We can't afford to even sign the likes of Lewdonoski and are struggling to raise the funds to sign Guti and yet you believe we should overall the complete central midfield? With what?

We have to make the best of what we have, thats just the way it is.

Just stating how i see it, that's what this forum is for after all.

We are stuck with Andrews but that doesn't mean you can't point out he is not good enough.

People on here are vastly overstating Pedersen's contributions from open play, take away the fact he takes virtually all our corners, throw ins and free kicks and then look at it from the criteria you stated, i.e. as someone in the hole (an attacking minded player who supports the striker) then he is nowhere near good enough. It was a completely stupid decision by the club to give him a new deal and will stunt any further progression of the side.

It wasn't me who brought up playing Guti as a sitter, at a first look to me I doubt very much he could play there. Hierro made the move but keep in mind he was a defender. Furthermore on Guti I don't see how you can say he can definitely do a job, you don't know that he can and that you are just making a guess. There are a lot of obstacles in his way, his age, whether he can cope with the physical demands of the premier league, the ego and from a financial point of view the cost of wages on an already strained budget.

I've seen time and time again our midfield being not up to standard and it looks like this season its going to be the same case again. I'm sick and tired of it.

Fair point, but I can't understand the logic in signing him unless we use him as a sitter. We need the quality around the centre circle to keep possession and build - and as it stands we already have Dunn and Pedersen competing for a single role behind the striker.

I would see it as something like this:-

--------------Kalinic

Olsson------Dunn------Hoilett

--------Guti-------Nzonzi

Givet---Samba---Jones---Salgado

-------------Robinson

Joey big nose knows nothing. He wants to play 3-2-4-1 with Kalinic in goal and Robinson up front.

Guti played 29 games for Real Madrid this year and had 3 goals and 10 assists. He is class, and that is something we are sorely lacking in our midfield. I don't see how anyone can say he is less suited to the Premiership than anyone who is not already a starting midfielder for a Europe-qualifying squad.

I was originally optimistic about this summer's transfer activity. Linked with the £6m Lewandowski did sound too good to be true, but not impossible based on our fine finish to the season and the money we made on McCarthy, Gallagher etc. With Pedersen's contract winding down, I really expected the club to push on and finally make that vital investment into the midfield. Then it was revealed that we couldn't play ball with Lewandowski, and had to resort to the Beatties and Benjanis of this world. And Pedersen makes a mint on his new deal, and our only midfield option is the ageing Guti and another Galatico wage.

I'd love to believe selling Grella will give us some leeway, but it'll probably be sucked into the vortex along with most of our "savings".

No issues with you stating what you feel, its just it came across more as you'd shift out the lot of them if you could. That would not be a good move IMO.

On Keith we all know he's pants, we have a thread with around 100 pages of it, does it really need to be said anymore? He's here, no sane bloke will sign him, we gave him a new deal, we're stuck with him. I'm fed up with seeing the club pay serious cash to players who make no contribution at all, he can do a job from the bench, just not in the 1st 11.

Pedersen well I've stated my feelings on him they're in the Pedersen thread for those that wish to read them. I completely disagree with your position on him. Its worth noting that even when Bentley was here Gamst still finished in the top twenty. We would never have gotten a player with his attributes for just his wages. So stupid in your opinion or not it was the best move a club with no money to spend could have made. We create bugger all from open play as it stands, from any of our players scoring almost 60% of our goals from set-pieces, a crazy ratio especially considering we struggle to score goals in the main. Losing Gamst would only have lowered our goals for column with no gaurantee, this miracle signing from his saved wages would have cut the mustard. We played it safe, a wise move for a club with no funds and only two strikers on the books, that scored a measley 41 goals in the league.

I think to many on here are blinkered in their views on Gamst as he doesn't fit in with their ideals of an a typical player and because of this ignore the positives he does bring to our squad.

Well whoever suggested him (Guti) as a sitter obviously doesn't know much about him. Every signing is a risk but Guti has Quality and Vision and so has a better chance than most for me. We're screaming out for someone who can spot a pass and control the game, he can do that and has done it time and again for Real Madrid, we won't get much better. The only way we'll get a better garuntee is if we buy a proven creative player from our league, but alas we have no dollar. even then he could just as likely flop.

We're all sick and tired of seeing us scrape the barrel for all positions relying on hopeful signings and chancers. but what else should we do? We have no money and blew the best chance we had to push on by appointing and backing that donkey Ince.

Wolves are paying £7million for fletcher?? Two thoughts come to mind: Why are they paying that much for him and secondly, it's a shame a newly promoted club can instantly become a relative spending giant compared to us. Any thoughts Vinjay??

That's a very attacking line-up--too attacking for Sam, I suspect. And I can't see why Sam would have fought so hard to retain Pedersen merely to bench him. Nor can I see where a new striker is going to go either.

Quick idea for you.....Blackpool come up with a reported wage bill of £4.8m.....they will now all of a sudden be receiving £40m this season, and a further £48m split over the next 4 years regardless of what happens + increased ST sales, increased merchandising, increased sponsorship etc etc.

Taking out their wages of £4.8m x 4 = £19.2m - they effectively have almost £70m to play with. Now obviously costs will go up with increased wages & they will also want to build a new stand - but basically they came up with a league 1 or 2 wage bill so now they are laughing and therefore if they want, they could afford a £7m signing easily!

I was fairly sure Blackpool were almost resigned to going back down, and will use the money to fund the stadium expansion. I believe they're hoping to then use the parachute payments to come back up again and make a more sustained effort at top-flight football. Don't have a link, just remember reading a couple of articles to this effect.

Possibly so - my point still stands though. A club with such a low wage bill will always be able to afford to spend more than a club that is already running at such a high wage bill, compared to their income.

Best thing Blackpool can do is improve thier foundations as a club (stand, facilities, academy etc) - and then also add a couple of younger players who will help improve them & make it easier for them bounce back within that 4 years (should they go down).
