unluckymorton Posted June 3, 2010 Posted June 3, 2010 Judging by all the strikers linked with the exception of Lewandovski, its clear to all and sundry that.... Sam Allardyce struggles big time when it comes to identifying a quality striker. It looks like this area is a major weakness to the former centre half, with money seemingly used far to readily as an excuse for not being able to find a quality striker, which I just dont buy especially when the club already pay out millions of pounds a year on individual salaries. I don't see it as Sam not being able to identify a good striker, I'm sure that along with the rest of us Sam can pick out a good striker. My opinion is that it's more of a case of actually landing a good striker, if we show interest in a striker so will many of our close competitors along with similar clubs on the continent, most of who will be able to pay more for the player and pay higher salaries. Birmingham and especially West Ham would probably attempt to high-jack any possible moves. There are not many good strikers available, and any good strikers that are not actually available and are tied down to long contracts at decent clubs would cost an absolute fortune. Players linked with us are mostly media speculation, players who Sam has quoted being interested in are available and affordable players. Players who are not available are not affordable to a club with our budget. Our club may well pay out a little more on salaries but that is understandable, how on earth do you attract a player to East Lancashire?

mhead Posted June 3, 2010 Posted June 3, 2010 Another week to land Lewandowski....a proper centre forward. Tell him about the tradition; the Polish people who settled here;the similar weather;the training set-up AND the 20,000 Season Ticket holders. Get him landed pre-10th June. Barmy Army. Come On.

I take that tone as though your running down East Lancashire and Rovers. The facilities at Brockhall must surely be second to none i've been to most North West training grounds and the feeling when you visit Brockhall is one of a top, top environment in which you can develop your footballing talents without doubt, and with Michel Salgado an ex leader of the galacticos of Madrid endorses this what higher praise can you get. The club has an extremely good pedigree amongst the higher echelons of English football. The club do pay very good salaries and do look after their players extremely well, so all in all theres plenty of positives for big Sam to do some good footballing business and bring in a good striker.
PAFELL Posted June 3, 2010 Posted June 3, 2010 At 26yrs old Boyd has the opportunity to make something of himself in the best league in the world. Benjani at 32 however has made over 100 Premier league appearances and scored 23 goals. In my opinion if we had the chance to sign either of the two I'd go for Boyd every time. I once wanted Boyd a few season back for Rovers. But I am not sure because in the big games he was not good or not even picked. But at the sametime he knows where the net is. There is also Sam's man - managerment of players, which by all acounts is good. If Sam can get him to train harder and get rid of some of the fat he has. Then at 26 years old there is still a chance he could cut it in the prem. But this would be all down to his attitude and Sam's ability to get the bst out of him. To be honest it is worth giving him a shout. at least for one season. If he is no good, he does have return to scotland sell on value. Other clubs in scotland would snap him up. So basically there is not much to lose in trying him. It risk worth doing. Benjani is annoying. The chances he created for city against Rovers. Two of those were shots aimed at goal, that somebody else finished off. One off the post, one off Tevez and the other a cross from the right. Thing is, he was in those positions to score or create the chances. If Rovers can get him as a free transfer and reduced wages as well as Boyd, it is two risks worth trying imo.
roversmum Posted June 3, 2010 Posted June 3, 2010 Now, see, we have to sign Benjani. Reid's gone, and it looks as if Grella's going, we can't leave the boys in the treatment room with nothing to do ...

I'm sure Sam will sign the best striker available to us, and more importantly a player who will want to be part of our close knit squad and work for the team.

Amo Posted June 3, 2010 Posted June 3, 2010 Benjani wasn't good enough for Sunderland, and he sure isn't good enough for us.
Veevs Posted June 3, 2010 Posted June 3, 2010 Still in two minds about Benjani.. Biggest problem for me is his consistency, he can be a match winner on his day.. but he can go through very long spells of playing poor and when he is poor he is very poor (take his goal scoring record at Man City, Auxure and his early portsmouth career). If Sam could get him to play well consistently then he would be a good signing... but I have doubts despite Sams record of turning players around. Another worry for me would be his wage, he turned down Hull on personal terms only last season.

Agree with the first part but it's an age thing. For someone who's middle aged then the Ribble Valley is a piece of Heaven on earth, even the Queen once commented she could happily live there. However for a 20 - 30 year old mega rich male the last thing they want is peace and quiet, fresh air and fishing. They want action, places where the fit women hang out (figuratively speaking of course), exclusive night clubs and bars etc., etc.. In this country then anywhere outside of London is always a compromise. The other large cities come in second place whilst us, Wigan, Bolton etc. come last in the pecking order. As for the second part - they come to us for only two things a] the EPL shop window and b] the end of career players who settle for the very high wages. There's an outside chance that someone may believe the coaching staff will turn them into a better player so we sometimes get the wannabe foreign kids with potential. That's the reality for us - short term and highly paid or young and unproven. Twas ever thus. Sam I think really prefers the first and I prefer the second e.g. Lewandowski. Yeah I know he went for Nzonzi, Hoillet etc., but if he had the cash to splash on wages I don't think he'd have taken these risks. Pee with the willy we've got? Now who said that

You dont have to show them Backburn, just Ewood, the ground that is. I live on the doorstep of Ewood, here in Oakdale, and for me its a far more greener and smarter place than probably EVERY inner City ground there is in THIS country. Would love to see if theres a better place, obviously i'm biased, but I do try to keep an open mind, only Cardiffs Millenium stadium can better Ewoods environment. Arte et labore
duffbear Posted June 3, 2010 Posted June 3, 2010 If he is 40 then how old is Kanu? Even Lewandowski costs more than £5M these days. Experienced freebie is very natural signing within our budget. Other words, Benjani is best we can afford. Makes success in Guti hunt even more important. We have to have better midfield with these strikers. Kanu Is 4 years older than what he says he is. I am friends with the scout that suggested for Wenger to sign him
braddock Posted June 3, 2010 Posted June 3, 2010 players can commute from further afield you know. they can afford a bus pass so don't have to live on bolton road. maybe even as far away as manchester! it's mental!
Tim Southampton Rover Posted June 3, 2010 Posted June 3, 2010 Kanu Is 4 years older than what he says he is. I am friends with the scout that suggested for Wenger to sign him Avram Grant: “How old is he? 49? I don’t know. Officially, he’s 33. I think he will play until he is 51, which is in two years time.”

Tell that to Andy Cole when he got baned from driving. He thought he was too famous to travel by public transport.
novella Posted June 3, 2010 Posted June 3, 2010 Is it going to be worthwhile checking back on here at around 11-ish tonight? Or has it been a quiet day?
