Let's look for a positive,

A striker that's 5"8 and very fast...a good omen for the kind of football Allardyce wants to play when he gets his own players in?

Pretty sure that's how he played at Bolton towards the end - big target man upfront with several quick/skillful players feeding off the second ball.

Did you not also say that Piquionne would be a poor signing for Rovers and as it happens has looked a good player for Pompey?

He has scored goals in the premier league playing for a team bottom of the league, has also got a 1 in 3 record for his country which is not bad. He may not be a world beater but I am not willing to right him off before he signs! I can also see him playing wide right of a front 3.

I'll stand by my view on Piquionne who has scored 5 league goals this season. You can argue that he's on a struggling team where he's less likely to score goals, but there are players on other struggling teams who were signed this summer who have scored more and from what I have seen of him the quality of his performances haven't been fantastic.

Neither Piquionne or Dindane are terrible, but we can do much better.

Fair enough, I do have a feeling that Dindane will turn out to be a good player for us and for 2 million I think he is worth the risk, out of interest which players from other teams have scored more this summer for a similar outlay, I can think of Klasnic at Bolton but his all round play is poor.

Eddie, Fletcher cost twice as much as Dindane. He was 4m if I remember right. And the Dingles are sick of him missing sitters so he's hardly Drogba.

I dunno, that sounds very much like Drogba to me...

On an aside to joking about Drogba, I've not seen anything of Dindane this season to warrant outlaying £1.50, let alone £1.5m. He missed a hatful of chances early on in the season, and to my mind is on a par with Roberts in most departments. Do we really want two of them in our side...?

Forget all this dindane stuff, that looks like it's going to happen no matter what. Im more concerned with the possible exit of Samba this summer. Not sure if there are clubs looking to bid for him but it wouldn't surprise me if we let him go for 7-10 mil and bring in Taylor from Newcastle. It could happen and to me it sounds believable.

I believe Fletcher was 3.5m and the price Portsmouth would have had to have paid to make the Dindane deal permanent was 4m wasn't it? So that's a pretty fair comparison. No idea what the wage comparison is (although my guess is Dindane is on considerably more) or exactly what the loan fee was.

No, he's saying you can't judge a potential transfer just on the 'head line' transfer figure. His wages and bonuses could make a huge difference to the overall cost of signing him.

That seemed pretty clear to me?

It was clear, and it can be applied to any transfer, not just this one - so why say it? That's why I asked.

I took it as we shouldn't buy players just because they're 'only £2m', but rather if they would improve our squad, preferably pushing for a place in the first 11.

Thanks for clearing that up. I do think any transfer made is meant to improve the squad though, and I'm confident that it applies in this case as well. I don't think Dindane is a great player, but whether or not he will be pushing for a place in the starting 11 is unquestionable. Be that at £10m, £4m or £2m.

Well I can still hold out hope that someone with a bit of power reads this board and has a sudden revelation that goes something like this:

"My word...a 29 year old who has struggled to score in every league he has ever played in, most of the time up against a quality of opposition that is far lower then he faces in the premier league, probably isn't a signing that will contribute much to this club."

I can hope...can't I?

What you could say is "I've got my personal reservations about this transfer but since I've got everything else wrong about this manager I'll trust him for once. After all He's been a Premier League manager for many years so he must know more than me."

I can't believe some people on here first of writing off a player before he even puts the shirt on we should never judge like that for all we know he might turn out to be ok. He does have one thing we lack up front and that is pace and with Kalinic able to hold up the ball so well with Dindane's pace I think they would compliment each other well. To sign a player on such a cut price deal for 2m I say is good business because if you look Strikers generally go for a lot more and also people want to sign better strikers but they have to remember better strikers cost a lot more dosh, and don't people realise if Big Sam had to spend say 10M on a striker don't people think Sam would like to sign either a Bent 9M, Crouch 10M, R.Keane 10M, or even a Torres 25M. At the end of the day we do not have the finances to sign either 10M or 25M on a striker. For the price we are willing to spend with Dindane/Piquionne are the sorts of players we could afford to get and would not be terrible players like some make out on here. With Dindane's pace he would be a good partner for Kalinic and people on here should support their team. Cos until we are taken over and we could realistically afford the best players in the world we won't be buying more expensive players. I'm sure as soon as a rich sugar daddy rides over the hill we will be spending that sort of money on players, but until that happens we have to support our club and make do with whoever we get at the end of the day. Unfortunately that is the market we are in!.

Rant Over!.

What an insane waste of 2m that would be. I hope that story is like the rest of the Daily Mail, complete garbage

Indeed! If we are to spend money on a goalie, it'd rather be someone like Anders Lindegaard playing for Aalesund in Norway. They're top of the league (after 3 games) pretty much thanks to him (Right Alexanders? ;-)) and he has looked brilliant the times I've seen him.
