unluckymorton Posted April 15, 2010 Posted April 15, 2010 Buzsaky is not good enough, Ledley doesn't exactly inspire either. Both are good championship players, bit like Ebanks-Blake. My thoughts exactly. We can't risk adding 'decent' Championship players to our squad, it's a massive step up to the top flight.

Majiball Posted April 15, 2010 Posted April 15, 2010 Don't get me wrong I have no issues with players coming here from the lower leagues, but you have to be really careful. Its very different when they all come up together ala Reading and Birmingham, because you already have cohesion and a strong understanding with your team-mates.
Hughesy Posted April 15, 2010 Posted April 15, 2010 Id rather Sam & his boys just find us some more rough diamonds for cheap.... they tend to cost much less, we polish them up, sell them for big money & that keeps us in this league! We still have to see what Liganzi has to offer yet too! Hopefully he will get a few sub appearances from now until the end of the season!

I'd rather we gave him a taste (if he's readyish) than Basturk. We should really start using the free-transfer market, but we where in a ###### position come january this season. However will we really be able to?, since we muct finish in X position to break-even, this makes forward planning a real head-ache as we never know until a month (or later) or so before the end what we will have available next season for wages and fees. I'm much keener on the model Hughes used, one quality signing and a few moissanite's.
LeChuck Posted April 15, 2010 Posted April 15, 2010 My thoughts exactly. We can't risk adding 'decent' Championship players to our squad, it's a massive step up to the top flight. Is it? Most good Championship players who step up usually do so fairly comfortably. Everton have made a habit of picking good Championship players and turning them into Premier League players in the past, like Cahill, Lescott, Gosling etc. Birmingham's defensive partnership (Dann and Johnson) is an excellent recent example. The likes of Stephen Hunt and Kevin Doyle didn't seem to have any problem stepping up either. Ashley Young too. The list is long. To write him off simply because he is in the Championship is a bit hasty, he's got the type of game that could easily adapt to the Premier League and already has 32 international caps at the age of 23.

Given Sams track record(Okocha, Djorkaeff, Campo even here with Salgado, Jacobson, Basturk.. ) and the rather large number of out of contract players this time round I would not bet against at least one nice freebie.. to me the question is more a case of which freebies we get.

The best ones are always snapped up as soon as they can be, january. Okocha, Djorkaeff and Campo all had great impacts at Bolton, but I certainly don't consider our three, good signings my reasonings (brief for a change) are in the sam poll thread.
nicko Posted April 15, 2010 Posted April 15, 2010 He was a shrewd signing and did a decent job for us, but you really were making him out to be a world beater when he signed. I thought Franco was a clever signing and an exciting prospect. Compared to some of the tripe that was being suggested - Amir Zaki springs to mind - it looked like a very good bit of business. Given the club's lack of cash he has given good value as a 'wages only' capture. There is no doubt the kid fluffed some chances but his overall play was very promising. The £6 million [or so] Kalinic has found the same problem, chasing balls and leading the line is hard in this system. Di Santo will be a Premier League player for years to come if he finds the right home. He is still young and has a lot of growing and improving in him.
Bobby G Posted April 15, 2010 Posted April 15, 2010 I thought Di Santo had his run during a critical period for us, where things were at their worst. Maybe he was a bit unlucky.
nicko Posted April 15, 2010 Posted April 15, 2010 I thought Di Santo had his run during a critical period for us, where things were at their worst. Maybe he was a bit unlucky. I think it is becoming very hard for strikers these days - particularly in the bottom half of the table. So many sides play with one up that they have to be able to lead the line and score goals. Just look at the goals totals for strikers at clubs like Wigan, Bolton, Stoke, Hull and West Ham. If you find a striker who has scored more than three goals this season it is a miracle. Either that or he takes penalties.
Majiball Posted April 15, 2010 Posted April 15, 2010 You need to be two strikers in one these days in the Prem. One striker against two brick ###### houses is a battle that most won't win.
LeChuck Posted April 15, 2010 Posted April 15, 2010 There will be a Dindane update later...11-ish. Interesting. If we've had that sub-£2 million bid accepted I'll be pleased. I imagine Dindane will be pushing for it as it frees him up for the FA cup final?

LeChuck Posted April 15, 2010 Posted April 15, 2010 Newspapers have stolen information from here before. If he posts it at 11pm it is too late for them to include it in tomorrow's edition, meaning his story should remaining as an exclusive.
Pedderz0912 Posted April 15, 2010 Posted April 15, 2010 Right - I get it now, Cheers for clearing that up Does Nicko usually do this weekly, fortnightly, monthly???? Is it anything regarding rovers or just Dindane??? or just pompey related????? Are his contacts nationwide sort of basis? Thanks in advance
Hughesy Posted April 15, 2010 Posted April 15, 2010 Contacts all over - mainly Rovers related - however he does often throw Coyle related stuff in there, with bits of other stuff + bits for our Villa fans who like to come on here... As and when he gets the info - usually daily in the transfer windows

Bit harsh Maj, writing off Buzsaky and Ledley. ive been able to watch quite a bit of Championship games, and i was watching Buzsaky and he looks like he knows what he is doing. His movement off the ball, and his passing looks much better than a some EPL players. Ledley, i know he has been sidelined after surgery, but another good cheap option, who is also a versatile player. They are good cheap options, and leaves us with money to splash on a top striker
