not saying he is a bad player but 17million for a full back when you have serious weaknesses in other areas seems steep. Mind you he did spend 25million on the Italian who has hardly played. To be honest i can't believe Rafa is going to get another season.

I heard from quite reliable sources here in Liverpool that Rafa was told that he had £30m to spend last summer plus whatever he brought in from player sales.

His net trading was £7m up after selling Alonso, Arbeloa and others and bringing in Johnson and Aquilani. He therefore believed, quite rightly, that he had £37m to spend and had lined up a few strikers as targets, including David Villa.

The Yanks then told him that he couldn't have the £7m he had raised, and also added that he could forget about the £30m they had promised him.

So basically, and I am not a fan Rafa, he was quite royally shafted by the yanks and made to look like a tool because he couldn't sign the extra striker they needed.

thinking about things I conclude we need 3 new players who can come in and make a difference. These I would class as urgent priority:

1. Defensive central midfielder to replace Andrews who can stay fit e.g. Noble,Ibricic,O'Hara,Merida.

2. 1 winger to replace Pederson if he leaves but altho some of his long throws, corners are good has no pace and we need that urgently e.g. Ledley,Belhadj,KP Boateng.

3. 1 striker e.g. Dindane,Pole,Boselli,Piquionne,Gudjohnsen on loan at spurs maybe we could contact Barca about taking him on permanently, and an extra striker if diSanto goes back & Roberts leaves.

Personally I think the most realistic are Ibricic,Noble,Belhadj & the Pole Lewandowski and if need be Dindane the rest esp O'Hara would want gastronomic wages!.

There you go Big Sam job done now all you need is to go out & try to get them.

Gudjohnsen is owned by MONACO!

I'd be happy with Lewandowski & Kalinic.

Dindane to replace Roberts... leaving us with 3 strikers

Although don't they say you need 4?

Andrews and Grella have to go, but most likely wont!

A new central midfielder, is a must.

Jones Samba Givet... Key defenders next year, but there is room for a new right back. Although i think Salgado has been excellent recently.

Personally i think our right side and central midfield is more of a concern if Morten does sign this week.

I remember Michaël Chrétien was looked at by Sam a while back, will be interesting to see if anything happens there, although i think most of our signings after the striker is brought in will have to be bargains looking for any slight improvements to all areas of the squad really, hopefully there could be some helpful loan deals but this midfield must be strengthened with some skillful players!

We need two new strikers & two new midfielders!

From the ex scout on ANO MB, Allegedly, Genoa have other striker options before Lewandowski, G. Rossi and K Kuanayi, Dortmund's intention was to wait until the end of their season and still maybe before making a decision. He also says Dortmund will only go to 25k max on wages for him.

We may well be in pole :D position, Sam needs to get this one nailed down quick.

Well this may be a hostage to fortune comment but with some players you can just see the talent ouse out of them and Robert Lewandowski is one of those players.

I read an earlier post comparing him to Shearer and my immediate knee jerk reaction was you're having a laugh but having thought about it I can see the comparison. At the same stage of their development they look pretty similar but I'd say Shearer had more muscle and Lewandowski has more balance, but that's it, the rest looks pretty much the same. Both have that sense of mischief about their play and seem to love not just scoring goals but showing up the oppos at the same time.

I like the look of this guy big time. Get him on a four year contract asap. He'll become as good for us a Shearer was, not a clone of the player obviously but he'll have the same step change effect on the team and club.

If this move comes off and we strengthen even modestly in other areas then boy oh boy we'll have some squad next year.

We should be able to do gastronomic wages afterall we had Benni and we've got some decent restuaurants around... ;)

Just a quick one on Benni, I read last week that he is on 36k now at WH, what where the guesstimates on here.

O'Hara did I not read on here a couple of weeks back, Spuds are quite tight in their wage structure, surely around 30-35k a week and a first team place almost guaranteed would interest him, with a chance to play for a proper FOOTBALL club. ;)

The same Germany who is about to overtake Italy in the rankings to be number 3 (if not this season, then next)? The same Germany who has as many teams in the Champions League semis as Spain and England combined?

The only advantage to coming here is the wages. Will get European football and at least a hope of being able to compete for the title. Best case scenario he'd get here is finishing 7th or 8th.

Took the words out of my word processor!

German league football is on a huge upswing at present. Aren't Dortmund in the top 20 European clubs by turnover as well so even superior wages could be a question?

This absolute monstrosity of a post is based on Youtube clips right?

18th with £85M/yr turnover. And we have, what £50M/yr?

I think if Shearer, uh, um excuse me, Lewandowski, signs with us and goes on to score 30 PL goals for us next season we should throw a big party for TimJim & whoever else it was who called that shot. We'll be, at worst, in third place at this time next year & probably looking at a chance at the cup-double. :D

One champions league semi-final and suddenly everything is wonderful in Germany? Germany has very good attendances, but it does so with cheap tickets (which is obviously a good thing for the fans and the atmosphere, but it limits their ability to compete financially). Philip, you usually like to break down finances into such detail it surprised me that you are just quoting turnover as it goes nowhere near to telling the entire story. Turnover continues to increase in German football, but it isn't increasing at the same speed as the debt that the clubs are building up.

The Bundesliga is probably now the third strongest league financially, but that still puts it way behind La Liga and the Premier League. Not to mention the fact that the quality of German football is pretty dire.

Fact is most German sides struggle to get through the group stages. That isn't going to change anytime soon. I would happily bet now that only one German team will make it out of the Champions League group stages next season. I will also happily then bet that no German team will make it past the quarter finals.

This is boring now.

England is clearly a better league than Germany with clubs who will pay bigger wages.

Dortmund are clearly a bigger club than Rovers, and can offer a better chance of European football.

These are the facts, and the biggest contributing factor to the blokes decision. I don't understand how the conversation got beyond these facts?

Linked with Cacau today, from stuttgart.Would be available on a free,if we could get £1.5-2m for Roberts, then he would be worth bringing in to give us a bit more dosh for a decent midfielder.Anybody know how decent Cacau is?

Cacau wants an absolute fortune...he is unlikely to be getting it from Blackburn Rovers.

At the moment he is well down the list.

I don't get these players that would rather stay at somewhere like Stuttgart (presumeably not on a fortune) than move for more money. I mean surely we are offering more than his current wage in Germany (based on the wage structures between the two countries discussed in this thead) but just not what he feels he is worth, yet his alterntive is to stay at Stuttgart on less...

Footballers are odd..

I hate when people give it the old "Nicko have you heard anything regarding...etc etc"

But....Nicko have you heard anything regarding the Andrews incident at the weekend?
