[Archived] Potential Summer Transfers (2010)

From that article -

"We will work with the players we have and work hard to improve them and our goal scoring record.

"I don't think I have ever been in the position where I have only needed one or two players.

"It is a great relief for me to be facing this summer only needing to improve the side by one or two players.

"My shopping in the market needs to be very few players and that is great for me.

"In my 10 years managing in the Premier League, this is the first time I only need to get one or two players in the summer."

I can accept that if it is a top central midfielder and a top striker.

I'd love to see Kalinic and Di Santo up front in a 4-4-2. Two young and very capable strikers who could form a great partnership and understanding IMO. I'd be happy to sign Di Santo for a few million and spend the rest on a creative midfielder and a winger or two. I think that alone would see us finishing in the top half.

What he said.

For strikers to perform they need a supply line, Rovers just havent got one at the moment.

We need a creative midfielder who can play the ball, run and pass, and open static and solid defences.

It does sound like SA is contemplating a different formation and swapping things around but before we sign a striker that midfield slot NEEDS ADDRESSING.

It seems like many of us have been saying this for years, but forget the sole focus on bringing strikers in. Our midfield needs some serious attention.

GOD YES. I'd keep our current batch of strikers if it meant we could sign a decent midfielder (or two). Remember when we had the likes of Tugay & Berkovic pulling the strings? Now we have Keith ####### Andrews...

Dindane with 2 goals today, Roberts with 0 against a poor Wolves team. If we get Dindane + another striker then il be happy. However, the midfield just lacks quality and we need to sort it out.

Can't big Sam see we have the worst midfield in the league, Kalinic and Di Santo would score goals if the midfield could create the chances for them. Spend all the money on the midfield !

If Sam announces to the world that he's desperate for a midfielder all he's doing is driving up the price. By downplaying it, trying not to look desperate, he can deal with potential prospects with at least the illusion of confidence.

Look at what he does, not what he says. His last two acquisitions, Basturk and Linganzi, have been midfielders. Three is you count re-signing Hoilett.

I think Sam is aware of the problem but is not acknowledging it, for fear that players and agents would try to take advantage if he admitted a weakness.

Personally reckon thats another one of Sams smoke screens.. I reckon we will be signing 2-3 players this pre-season.

Gutted we might miss out on Robert Lewandowski he certainly looks like a decent player to say the least.

Agreed on both counts. I'm not sure how football players and agents market themselves to managers, but my suspicion is that agents make the calls and try to see if a manager will bite. I have no doubt that Sam knows what he needs and has multiple targets to address those needs. He just has to wait for the right call and then, if he can, look reluctantly interested, act of two minds, and convince the agent that his player needs to close the deal before this unenthusiastic buyer gets away.

Kind of like the Arab merchents in the old Sinbad movies. "I have the best apple in the entire world." "I don't want an apple." "My apple is the most beautiful apple ever, and cheap." "Cheap, that's a rip off! Do you have any peaches? No? Too bad." "Wait. I have hungry children. I'm desperate. I'll give you a one time great price for this best of apples." And so on.

By using that logic though he is simply driving up the price for a striker by banging on about it all the time, which on average are even more expensive, I don't think that's the gameplan to be honest.

Sure he is banging on about a striker and one name in particular.. who admits he would love premier league football.. and has been allowed to visit all potential clubs (even prior to fees being agreed).

Its a gamble but the fact he is playing that line says allot to me at least.

My guess is we will offer a package with additions (x appearances etc) to meet the 5m.. as long as another prem team does not dive in we have a good chance.

And what better motivation to any young player of class to move too a team who is willing to sell when the time comes... and help you get there (jnr, Niko, jones and olie this season on progression and sales like Santa, bentley et al)

Yes. Except he hasn't bought a striker has he, despite Benni moving on. Never can quite close the deal on the 3-5 million pound strikers we've been eyeing up (Dindane, Lewandowski).

Frankly, the price for both was right. Neither Sam nor JW are incompetent. If they truly wanted either striker, the deal would have got done. The deal didn't get done so I'm half way of the opinion they didn't want it done.

I would be ok with the strike force we have today, Niko, Roberts and Di Santo. Roberts is good at what he does and Niko and Di Santo will come good, I'm convinced. We need a midfield to fed our strike force and back up our defense. 2-3 acquisitions and I would be very hopeful about next season, though to be fair I already am as our 2d half has been much better than the 1st half of the season, IMO.

Yes but Di Santo won't be here next year.

We'll surely be looking to bring a forward in, I don't think Sam is pretending to be after one but is secretly planning to spend it all on a midfielder, surely were not going to go into next season with only Kalinic and Roberts?

Sorry you've lost me.

Are you saying that we are sending out scouts, speaking to teams and players when we don't really want them? hasn't Dindane been up to brockhall and the such, was that just for a jolly? Why are we flying the pole over, do we do weekend breaks?

Won't take long before any club/player just hangs up the phone on us if all we are doing is dicking people around.

Do we know what rovers budget is for next season? i haven't heard anything about it. I heard that the new tv overseas deal starts new season which is a increase of 7.5 million pounds on the current deal, so this will add to the transfer budget. We have to TRUST BIG SAM to sign the right players. We need 2 strikers and 1 midfielder players

Last summer Big Sam wanted Darren Bent because he scores goals and is cycinal up front. just imagine where we would be in the league if we had sign him.

If Big Sam wants Cisse then we should sign him!!!
