[Archived] Potential Summer Transfers (2010)

a) David Healy scores goals at international level it means sweet fa

B) You have seen him play, in the polish league... I saw Andrews at MK Dons, he was like their Roy Keane, doesn't make him any good at a higher level.

Right, well if you have an ability to judge the quality of a player you can see whether or not they stand a good chance of making that step up to a higher level. Lewandowski has that sort of ability.

He is plying his trade in the Polish league scoring a fair amount of goals and people talk as if we are missing out on signing the next Ronaldo. Ive got nothing against the lad, he looks half decent but this stuff like "a young alan shearer" "he has great potential" blah blah blah is insane. And not blow the majority of our budget on someone who could well flop like Kalanic slaps of stupidity to me.

Come on, be fair. Phil Jones is Colin Hendry, Terry Butcher and Franz Beckenbauer rolled into one, after a handful of decent games.

MeanGreanMachine, he may well turn out to be a dud, but I'll give you the name of a player we were linked to only 18 months ago:

Dzeko.

We hesitated and passed up the chance to buy him for 6-8 million and he is now valued at 30 and one of the most sought after and respected young strikers in Europe.

You haven't seen this guy play, so why don't you sit this particular discussion out? Having you criticise the player and those who are excited by him is just as ludicrous as someone getting excited about a player they have only seen on youtube.

Did we ever have a chance of signing Dzeko? I know that was the fee bandied around at the time, but the likes of Milan and Chelsea were being heavily linked with him

At Jan 09 Dzeko had scored something like 5 goals in the season (8 in the previous season), and Wolfsburg weren't at the top of the league. I think we were supposedly using the RSC money for him, and atleast I don't recall any big teams being reportedly interested at the time. Had we managed to sell RSC early in the window.. who knows. It was the second half of the 2008-09 -season when Dzeko and Wolfsburg were flying, and since then all the big clubs have been linked.

I understand your general point though.

We did have a chance of signing Edin Dzeko. It was during January transfer window of last season I think that we were very interested in him for the summer when we all knew that Santa Cruz was going to cry until he got his move (great success that's been!). He wasn't scoring the same amount of goals at that point, but people at Wolfsburg saw him as a real star for the future. I think they were surprised at how quickly he developed and from the January onwards, he was destroying teams and banging in the goals and effectively won the league for Wolfsburg (with Grafite). It was at the end of the season when everyone could see what a devastating striker he is that all the big boys got interested. We have no chance now.

Ah right, because two European powerhouses like Dortmund (where he wouldnt be first choice) and Genoa (where he would be around 4th choice) make him a wonder striker?

Its not really as simple as that is it now?

Dortmund were in the UEFA cup final less than 10 years ago, they also won the Bundesliga in this time period.

Genoa finished 5th in Serie A last season and are one of the richest clubs in the league. I don't really understand what makes you think we should be setting our sights higher than theirs.

does anyone know much about nick blackman. i remember him being higly rated when he arived maybe its time for him to have a runout last game of season see how he fits in with nicko?

I've seen him a few times but I don't think he's ever going to be more than a reserve team/lower league striker.

Would be nice if he did make it but I just can't see it.

What about Denni Avdic? A tall talented 21 year old striker at Elfsborg in Sweden. He has scored 9 goals in 10 games so far this season and he has been

a regular since he was 18, he has even managed to be a young pro at Brondby in Denmark.

Could be a find, watch this space.

Nicko: Have you heard about interest in Denni Avdic from Elfsborg?

Rovers supposedly interested in Canella

And Tchoyi:

Why would you need a left back?.The French fella seems good enough.

Tchoyi surely isn't good enough,he lacks technical ability and composure.

Off topic: Sampdoria maybe willing to send Guido Marilungo out on loan again next season,he would be a decent loan signing for you,if you have little money,he's better than the Argie you have at the moment.

Givets best showings have come at centre back where he prefers to play. Him and Samba have looked our best pairing this season. He's also rather limited going forward in that role for me, we do miss Warnocks forward runs and with Salgado doing it on the right it would be good to see some balance and have a left back doing it as well.

Loans are something Sam has said we won't be doing unless we have to. Its not like in Italy here they don't believe its a good idea as the improved player goes back and they think they've wasted their time. Crazy line of thought but thats the way it is.

Going slightly off topic.

I can think of the Bolton game, what are the others? And that game he played alongside Keith Andrews.

Samba and Givet have played together against (I'm not including the Everton game because he went off @ half time)

Man City (H) 0-2

West Ham (H) 0-0

Wolves (H) 3-1

Liverpool (A) 1-2

Tottenham (A) 1-3

That's your opinion and a few people have said the same. I just don't see why you think him and Samba have been our best pairing.

If my team Torino doesn't get promoted back to Serie A,you should try to sign Angelo Ogbonna our best player,he's a young centre back.but can play left back too.He would cost about £2 million as his contract only has a year to run.

Theres no way he'll stay if we don't get promoted. :(

Biased????

You are incapable of giving any sort of objective viewpoint due to your "Obsession".

I didn't even mention Nelsen once in my above post, but if that's the best excuse you can come up with, I think you're the one with the bias opinion.

LOL, your sig + the fact every post (almost) is about Ryan and how great he is. Just because you don't mention it in one post doesn't mean its still not there.

Its not an excuse I stand by my statement, the two have looked far more capable together and the defeats you show have come against some serious strike forces. Jones is too young so you wouldn't be suggesting him so that leaves only Ryan to come back into the fold. You'll also notice I didn't mention him, you did. I merely stated you had an obsession that blinkers your viewpoint, you mentioning Nelsen shows its present.

Unfortunately the Admiral has lost a few yards (should make it easier for you to chase him down, ;) ) and made some silly errors, like backing into players looking for fouls when he should be trying to get something on the ball. I would also like to throw into the ring that the Arsenal game spoke volumes, yes he had a good game, but why did the named club captain not have the armband?? He started so surely he should have had it? thats how it works?

I can see Samba taking it off him next year as Ryan will be on the bench, especially if Sam finds a good cheap left back, wait and see.

I know this ones a bit out there, but with all our players leaving this summer and the hopefully saved wages, I wonder if Sam could persuade Ballack to have his swan song with us? As I said serious long shot, but he has said he wants to stay in the Premiership.

That could be a decent shout, wages could be a problem though, but Ballack is a good experienced player, would help Nzonzi and can strike a ball too!

Nelsen has made a few mistakes this season but who hasn't? Certainly not Samba----stupid sendings off eg, certainly not Givet----allowing his man to steal in unmarked eg Arteta and 2 others recently. Can't remember any major blunders from Jones yet which is incredible given the games he started. Defence is not just about pace, its about reading the game, toughness and good timing as Kevin Moran proved. Nelsen looks as good as ever to me and I have no designs on him whatsoever!

He does a good job. But he's only there because he's left footed. He's at his best in the centre of defence. If we could sign a proper left back and moved Givet into the centre, our defence would be even stronger than it is at the moment.

Ballack is on £160,000 a week at Chelsea. We could only offer him a third of that and that would be really stretching it. And he wouldn't to play for us. He would certainly make us a better team though.

Pace is pre-requiste in the league now, reading of the game counts for a lot but that with a bit more pace and you've got the lot. Givet marked one of the quickest players out of the game against arsenal, I'd like to see that level of anticipation back in the centre. Its no slight on Nelsen, but he has lost a couple of yards and for me has not been the rock he has been this year. Givet is quicker than Nelsen, speaks french and reads the game very well, better than Ryan at present for me. i'd still keep him around but if I were Sam I'd want to replace Warnock and Samba is crucial to our set-piece's so its down to him or Nelsen, so for me it would be Givet with Nelsen taking a backward step.

EDIT: 160,000 a week come on surely not, thats more than either of Lamps or Terry.

Sam's done it before with Anelka and tried for Ruud last year, it would just be nice to get some serious quality back in our midfield. There's one or two good older central players on frees this year it would be nice to at least try and get one.
