[Archived] Rovers Might Have Been Sold?

Recommended Posts

I have to say, it is somewhat of a naive statement to think that £300m over the next 10 seasons would only enable us to jump a few places.

We're talking about a top half Premier League finish over a sustained period here. I for one would be ecstatic with this return.

I agree an investment like this will mean we are unlikely to break the top 4, but we simply have to spend this sort of money to stay at a similar level (or improve slightly) in the coming seasons.

Let's face it - with a different result from Villa and Arsenal at the tail-end of the season we could have been looking at a 13th placed finish. A regular top half Premier League finish will be fantastic, and I look forward to plenty more if when the take-over happens.

According to the Times this morning Ali Syed has stepped up his efforts to buy Rovers by enlisting the help of Jean-Claude Darmon who is a leading football marketing pioneer.Darmon will advise Syed`s team which hopes to conclude a deal with the Trustees by the end of the month and clear the club`s £20 million debt.

Darmon would then step in and develop the required marketing strategy.Apparently he has done this with 18 0f France`s top clubs.

Syed`s potential investment is the £300m mentioned on here. The negative is that the takeover would not be completed before the end of the transfer window.

Syed`s main interest it is said is in expanding the academy to develop English talent.

He also wants to retain the current management team which may not please some on here!

I know most of this as been mentioned previously but the Frenchman`s name is an interesting development.

Syed has 4 weeks period of exclusivity.

This means there is a deal in place subject to what is found in the next four weeks.

Very good news that they are keeping the existing management, investing in the academy and bringing the French marketing guy in. This one has got legs and is happening pretty well to the timetable I outlined at the beginning of last week.

So due diligence has been entered into????

Interesting read.

philipl, care to cut and paste it???

Anyone care to name 18 world famous French clubs, or 18 French clubs for that matter without using Google? I got Paris St Germain, Bordeaux, Lyon, Marseille, Nice. As this Jean Claude guy has been promoting them since 2001 I'd hope for a bit more progress if I was in their shoes!

Loads of questions still exist in my mind but mainly two:

Why buy Rovers?

What will £300m buy over ten years? Not much considering the directors value our current squad at an estimated £47m. So that's the first £50m or so spent on replacing what we have?

I'm not sure there is quite so much to get excited about.

Let's see what is in the LT tomorrow before jumping to conclusions.

My take is Darmon has been successful in raising cash from marketing efforts by French clubs which are on the whole not dissimilarly placed to Rovers in terms of being town clubs with significant problems in driving sponsorship and commercial revenue.

day of big developments for the club and maybe the beginning of yet another new adventure in the life of being a Rovers fan !

I think, on the eve of the season, the speculation about investment and time parameters, is just taking the gloss of what could actually be a significant period in the history of BRFC.

I cannot wait to read the media tomorrow and if events off the park are matched by things on the park we might just have a decent day at the office.

Bring it on.

Loads of questions in my mind too Paul. Namely what exactly is he going to market, obviously BRFC but to whom exactly?

Why Rovers? Hardly any debt, well run by JW and the Trustees (frustrating as it is - we're comparatively very solvent at the moment).

What will £300m buy us? Well that's £300m more than we had to spend yesterday. Before I / we get too excited I'd be quite happy if they invested a paultry £5m a season (can you imagine?!?).

As brian_g pointed out Wenger is on net -£6m a season - which is shocking if you ask me. But shows what can be done. In fact Sam (boo!, hiss! - Eddie, that would be your money he's saving!?) did that last season. Admittedly we don't attract the "Arsenal" quality of player at the moment (or their gates or gate money) and probably never will do, until we start paying £300K a week for some Italian reserve.

I don't know, must be my age. I find it totally bizarre. No one makes money out of a football club. If someone can name an example, that doesn't leave a sour taste in the mouth, I'd be delighted.

There's only one Jack Walker.

Best regards

bob fleming, Blackburn, Lancashire, England.

I generally agree, but...didn't Ken Bates? Alan Sugar? Correct me if I'm wrong, just trying to use the top of my head as it were.

Having read this post about 12 times now Eddie I still cannot quite believe neh understand it.

I wrote it rather quickly and probably didn't express myself particularly well. I have two or three extraordinarily wealthy friends and I have been convincing them that they this might be a worthwhile venture, at the same time making sure that if we decided to go with it that their intentions would be correct and that they would be seriously committed and in the last few weeks I've made a huge amount of progress.

Bates left them hours from going bust until The Russian bought them I seem to recall. Sugar, yep, he made money as well. Were the clubs better off?

Go on Eddie, good on you, please explin how investing in BRFC would be a good idea?
