I think that it would also be a good idea for them to initially let Jean-Claud Darmon deal with the media. He is very experienced at this sort of thing.

Yep, You're right.

Of course, as usual, everything has been taken out of context. I was simply saying that Shankley wouldn't have considered taking on any kind of media attraction. His signings were made because of what they offered as footballers, nothing else. I certainly don't remember him signing anyone who's best days were behind him. That was the right approach then and it's the right approach now.

Anyway, I deviate again.

I personally feel that Beckham still has a lot to offer in football, based on his ability, but that is my opinion and people may not agree, but look at Tugay he got better with age!!!

Thats the difference between then & now - its all about media now & about using it the best you can to promote your club to earn yourself more cash.

If our situation is to break India or Far East etc...then its a no brainer! Or an alternative would be someone like that Honda fella.

Shankley was never averse to using seasoned old pros to anchor his teams.

Never players on their way down as far as I can remember. He never signed anyone mainly because of their media advantages. The top managers nowadays wouldn't either.

Beckham was playing Champions League football for AC Milan a few months ago, he would have been at the World Cup had he not been injured.

He's a fantastic professional and keeps himself in great shape, plus he's never had much pace to lose. He'd probably be our best player if came. He's got a few years left at the very top as a central midfielder.

The media advantages are just a way of justifying the money it would take to bring here.

Regarding Shankly, you're right he wouldn't have signed Beckham for Liverpool. That's because he was trying to improve on one of the best teams in the world. We're trying to get into the top half of the league. Totally different.

Very good player. Wouldn't have signed him otherwise I reckon.

Listen chaps, if anyone wants to start a new topic about this sort of discussion [coaching/tactics/skills - whatever], I'll take part, but I'm very conscious of clogging this topic up again.

den you're getting confused - Shankly played football, we are watching a marketing exercise where it's more important to promote yourself to earn more cash than it is to win football matches.

You're right though Shankly was years ahead of his time and produced some of the best football teams I've seen.

Shankly would have had some pretty forthright views about the modern game.

Well that's Syed's call isn't it? Hasn't put a foot wrong as far as I'm concerned.

The only problem seems to be that because he hasn't put a foot wrong the Lancastrian conclusion is inevitably "he's too good to be true".

I agree with Philipl and others, deal was agreed in principle prior to due diligence which is the detailed legal/commercial/financial "pipe cleaning" process. This deal will be done barring a disaster.

Not much point commenting on here for the next 3 weeks. All we will add is blind gossip with little or no factual substance. Of course a number of us just come on here for exactly that sort of entertainment.

I for one will cease to comment until something concrete happens, probably around 10th September, which also means almost certainly no money to spend in this transfer window, which might actually turn out to be a blessing when you see what is currently available at the moment. I know we need to strengthen, but there is strenghtening for the sake of it which adds nothing but extra burden on the already bloated wage bill.

correct me if im wrong, but didnt a similar deal collapse, after Rovers were not happy with the news being made public? Was that during takeover talks, or was it about a certain player who we were after?

Weren't you arguing earlier that players stop getting better once they hit 22/23?

I do believe that I may have mislead some people into believing that I was talking about all players.

But my shadow, otherwise known as Manchester Blue, would confirm that I always said that if a striker hasn't become a first team fixture by the time he's 22/23, it's more than likely that he wont make that grade. In fact, darned nearly all the top strikers have made the grade well before that point.

The discussion about Lennon was to do with whether there are certain qualities that a player will never improve on - i'e' having the vision to regularly open up a defence with pass.

Defenders/midfielders/goalkeepers certainly improve with age [KA excepted].

Two different arguments that have gone on since Gallagher moved on.

A very good move. I think that they have learnt very quickly that buying a football club is unlike any other deal that they have done in the past, in terms of the media interest that it will generate.

They were doing fine until Mr Ali started to talk and reveal far to much detail. I suspect that Rovers would not have been happy about stuff like transfer budgets etc being discussed before the deal is concluded, it's not the way that Rovers like to do business.

Even though some of his comments are taken out of context, the more Mr Ali speaks, the more paranoid I get about the deal.

I think that's a different situation altogether.

As I recall nicko claimed that one of Dan Williams supposed backers (Plainfield Asset Management?) got cold feet after their involvment became public. (That's if they were ever truly interested in the first place)

Dan Williams certainly never reached the stage where he was allowed access to the books either.

Enjoy reading your views Den even if I don't always agree. I think the Shankly point is worth thinking about but it is a totally different game nowadays so it's hard to compare. Nobody Shankly ever bought would have been worth anything in terms of commercial revenue. The nearest thing you could compare to would be Fergie and even he's bought players like Dong from China, surely influenced by the commercial aspects. For a club aiming to push on and increase marketing revenue a signing like Beckham is the most obvious way of doing it.

As for the best days behind him comment, i'd reiterate what someone else said about Dave Mackay being bought by Clough, in my view the best manager ever. Clough bought Mackay despite it raising eyebrows because of Mackay's age and the view his best days were gone. That was because he identified the benefits Mackay would bring not only on the pitch but in the dressing room and I don't think you can underestimate that effect

I don't think anyone could ever accuse Bill Shankly of being stupid.

The game has moved on immeasurably off the pich since the 1960 s and early 70's

To suggest Shankly wouldn't have at least one eye on that were he about today is somewhat far fetched imo.

After the feeding frenzy of the previous posts, my initial reservations about Mr. Ali's takeover bid have ironically given way to concerns for Mr. Ali.

I'm beginning to wonder who needs protecting from whom?

To put things in perspective, there's a big city club just down the road from Blackburn, which, despite spending unprecedented amounts of money, often struggles to sell all its tickets. That's the same club that, ten-years ago, sold-out virtually every home game in League 1 (or the old Third Division). Not surprising really considering the recession, an increasingly competitive leisure market and random kick off times. For that reason, the last thing we need is to be lumbered with a gaping 19,000 seat White Elephant - conveniently facing the TV cameras - reminding the incumbent on a fortnightly basis of the folly of huge infrastructure projects in a provincial club with a small catchment area.

Secondly, talk of signing a 36 year-old Beckham, after he has just recently learned to walk again without the aid of crutches, is plain embarrassing. A shrewd business man and accomplished self-publicist he may be, but as far as I'm aware, Mr. Ali hasn't claimed spiritual ministry. He can preach the good news to the poor, but he can't make the lame walk. Caution should be counselled; if you walk too long with a cripple, you'll eventually start to walk with a limp.

Fortunately help is at hand. I'm putting my faith in Kamy100 to help keep Mr. Ali out of the clutches of the lunatic fringe who seem intent on sending him on knights' errands to daydream castles and to tilt at windmills. Someone has to play the role of Sancho Panza, to Mr. Ali's Don Quixote. Someone has to guide him away from the path of personal privation and public humiliation, down which some swivel-eyed fantasists and iPhone message board Ouanquers would so merrily lead him…and the rest of us.

Well congratulatios to "the comeback kid" I have given his post (quoted that others may learn) a +1 even though I am not entirely impressed by it's message overall. But for the sheer beauty of it's composition I have to say I have rarely seen it's equal on this MB before. Well done that man!

That's a fair comment on Mackay MB.

Mackay was a giant of a man on the pitch and we have to remember that Cloughy had an eye for that sort of signing - John Robertson was another that no-one else would have turned around like Cloughy did.

Would you compare Beckham coming to rovers in the same vein? Would Clough have taken Beckham at this late stage in his career and all the entourage that follows him around? I doubt Cloughy would have entertained it. We'll never know though.

A little update, have been informed that Mr Ali nor his team will not be making any further public comment on the take over. This is due to the huge media interest and the speculation (I assume the Beckham quote taken out of context) which have cause the due diligence process to be disturbed.

They are now going to concentrate on completing the due diligence process and comment once the process has ended.

Halleluiah!!! :tu:
