There was a Parliament debate this morning about the roles of supporters in the running of professional football clubs - particularly pertinent to us. You can view it here -

http://www.parliamentlive.tv/Main/Player.aspx?meetingId=6560

I've got a slightly self-indulgent reason for posting that (aside from it being topical) - a friend of mine (and MP for Swindon North) speaks during the debate, forward to 1hr 10mins to catch his piece. He currently lives in Swindon but is originally from Blackburn and is a big Rovers fan (one or two members of the messageboard have met him at games previously). He represents Rovers well and adds a few words about Rovers, JW and the Trust at the end.

I totally agree... I was thinking about it the other day and wonder just how attached City fans can really feel to their club at the moment. Their team is essentially a collection of vastly overpaid mercenaries - even fans of Utd and Chelsea have players like Giggs, Scholes, Rio, Terry (odious tw@t that he is), Lampard, Drogba et al who they can bond with to an extent because they've been at the club a long time and seem to have some kind of affinity towards the club. Can the City fans really say that about any of their players?

Similarly, we can look at a lot of our players now - Samba, Nelsen, Jones, Dunn... even MGP, and feel a certain connection with them not because they always play fantastically but because they've been at the club a while (and/or are local lads) and have always represented us fairly well. I'd say even the newer players like Robbo, N'Zonzi, Givet, Salgado and Kalinic have built up a decent rapport with the fans as well. It's an element that seems missing from City - they seem like a plastic club and even if they did achieve something, as a fan I just don't know how connected I'd feel to it if Rovers went down the same route.

ALL players are mercaniries...FACT.

Do you honestly think different? if ANY of our players got offered more money at bigger clubs they'd be off before you cad "hissing syd is innocent!"

The fact of the matter like it or lump when we were champs we paid top doller and the merceniries came then ,its a fact of football life and you dont know how connected if we won something with "cityesqe signings" you would feel???/ I WILL TELL YOU YOU WOULD CHUFFING LOVE IT!!!! I know i would!!!

I'm aware of that, you've missed the point really. I'm not saying the players aren't mercenaries, I'm saying that fans can connect with players that have been at the club for a long time and appear to have at least an interest in playing and representing Rovers (you can't say a player like Nelsen isn't proud to play for us). City fans don't really have any players to connect with as almost all of them have gotten there recently and are clearly there solely for the money and NOTHING else.

I'm glad you'd love supporting a soulless club mate, but it wouldn't suit me at all.

But most City fans are having the time of their lives, I'm sure they connected with the likes of Sean Goater and kind of revelled in that 'typical Citeh' mindset but this cash injection is going to let them realise their dreams.

Of those young players in the 1st team, how many out of those are from their academy? Point i was trying to make, is that was it necessary for VDV, when they could have given a promising youngster like Rose more of an opportunity.

The thing is I imagine you are only saying this cause Rose scored a stunner, how many other time have you seen him? If Josh Morris scored a good goal would you rather have him in the team over arjen robben?

I suppose so, but to me at least it'd be incredibly hollow to go out, splash hundreds of millions of pounds and then win the league. I don't think City's spending is comparable with Jack's spending back in the day... difficult to judge, seeing as things were much different back then to how they are now, but players like Pearce played huge parts in our season and came in on a free. Plus I'm sure our players weren't on obscene wages for the time (though I could be wrong there, I genuinely don't know how our players pay then compared with other clubs).

Not saying anybody is right or wrong, but mass-spending definitely rips the soul out of the club and I think I'd find that hard to take. I'd rather the playing field was made even across the board than we get a huge cash injection to become another plastic club up there with Chelski and City.

Statement was due yesterday or today, thus far nothing. Since Monday evening Mr Ali's PR team have gone totally silent, this is very unusual for them. So either deal us nearly complete and they will release a statement with details of the takeover or the deal has totally broken down and therefore they are not at this stage releasing the statement.

Something significant has definitely happened since Monday evening as they were all set to release the statement. The silence from the PR team is also unusual for WGA.

While I would like to have heard what Syed has to say on the matter, I imagine he has more important and pressing things to do at the minute...like completing the purchase of a Premier League football!

All part of the same pie.

Why bother releasing statements intended for the fans telling them what the plan was? shouldn't he have kept quiet and carried on with the purchase of Blackburn Rovers? How long would it have taken to compile a statement repudiating the accusations? Provided there was no spinning involved, then I'd say 45 minutes at most. Hardly disruptive to his purchase, and if he were genuine and had nothing to hide, he'd want this squared off before the purchase.

It's concerning therefore that he hasn't released anything for 48 hours, and people on here sticking up for him no matter what doesn't really get us anywhere.

Seconded.

I agree as well, unless they are getting ready to royally sue the hell out of someone all this quiet is unnecessary. "That's Rubbish and here's why" takes about 2 minutes to say and about the same to prove - if you are on the level.

If not... it can take years to write a good novel.
