Jim, genuine question; which Labour MP claimed £18,000 for book cases five months before he retired, I genuinely can't remember.

Koi, you do realise that Jim doesn't answer direct questions don't you? Some might say that's not the only similarity to certain politicians.

Must admit that jim/doris mk? is running rings around everyone else here in brilliantly preparing the battlefield for the next general election...............

The next Alastair Campbell perhaps ??

You think? All I see is Jim ducking questions (as mentioned above) and copying and pasting his favourite stories from the Guardian. What I do admire about Jim is his obvious literacy skills, there's no doubt that his postings on this thread and others are very eloquent, even with large chunks of copied material. As for the next Campbell, well I'd be offended and Jim should be, after all Campbell is anything but a socialist. I am getting very bored with this thread though!

If you want a good example of how Jim operates look at how has to go on the attack over expenses when it is his own party who has MP's facing criminal charges AND they have the cheek to claim legal aid (funded by the tax payer) for stealing tax payers money.

I am getting very bored with this thread though!

By the way it was Tam Dalyell who claimed for the bookcases -

Former long-serving Labour MP Tam Dalyell attempted to claim £18,000 for bookcases, two months before retiring from Parliament in 2005.

Back to David Law's, look at what Stephen '£5000 a day for lobbying' Byers did (and got away with) -

The former Trade Secretary used the expenses system to claim more than £125,000 for the London flat owned by his partner.

Over the past five years, Mr Byers is said to have spent more than £27,000 on renovation, redecoration, maintenance and appliances at his flat in Camden, north London.

Because it says "But the new coalition government has scrapped the £50m project".

Sorry but your link clearly states that the improvements to Victoria station are to be scrapped when clearly they are not. The article states that the £30m project will not receive the £5m from the DfT that was previously pledged.

Are you sure everything Tory isn't good, while everything not Tory isn't, Koi? [or something like that  ]

You hardly put a balanced viewpoint forward.

If you look back at my postings you will notice that I have at many times in the past been at odds with the Conservative party. At one point I even joined the GWU (what a joke that is). I did feel the party had a great opportunity when Ken Clarke originally ran for leader but that wasn't to be. It is only in the last couple of years that I have backed Cameron and the Conservative party as I agree with the majority of what they say. I have however felt that areas such as Europe, the middle-east and taxation at the top end has been out of touch with what's needed. Of the two other parties Labour, new or not has proved yet again that they are incapable of running the country the only problem is that this time I fear we have no way back. I did/do think that the Lib Dems managed one or two good points and hopefully they will be integrated with the Tories ideas.

As a member of the ruling aristocracy Churchill would say that wouldn't he ? The question is why people like you identify with and vote for people like him. "One nation Conservatism" is a myth perpetuated by the ruling classes to fool the ignorant proletariat into keeping them into power. So you have been well and truly duped - well done. Labour's good work in renewing and revitalising the country's infrastructure and public services over the past 13 years was money well spent - my only complaint is they did not spend enough. And if you want a good example of Tories wasting money look no further than the bodged rail privitisation by Major's government and the throwing away of national assets such as the telecomms, electricity and water industries by Thatcher. And I would be very careful about getting into a debate about MP's expenses - it was Tory MPs who were claiming for new chandeliers, keeping the moat clean and cutting the hedges round their tennis courts. By then that OK because they're your sort of people aren't they ?

Since 1997, we have spent more (relatively) than any country in the world on public services.

Shame we didn't have the money that we spent....

Two weeks ago, the beaten "bigot"-belittler Gordon Brown stood on the steps of 10 Downing Street and literally offered to get into bed with the likes of David Laws

 unfortunate choice of words there Tris.............but made me laugh on a bad day

Good grief! As opposed to porn vids and second homes for relatives etc.

I think it's well known that the snouts in the trough were alike across the parliamentary benches and I don't think any party came out smelling of roses thats for sure. Don't try to twist the facts and stop being so embittered just cos the most inept and damaging government in 70 years lost an election.

As for David Laws? He's broken the rules it seems so he needs binning and thats that. There is a never ending line of people wanting a seat in the Commons. No government can show any mercy to anybody who breaks the rules so soon after the expenses scandals which occurred on the last government's watch.

Sorry Tris, whilst I feel sorry for the chap, he has to resign for stealing from you and me.

He could have keep his sexuality quiet without stealing our money.

Difficult as he is... was a prominent public figure stu. 'Tell the truth and shame the Devil' my old mum used to say. One lie in his position will always lead to many more and just as in the Profumo scandal the nation can neither condone nor tolerate MP's who leave themselves wide open to blackmail. In the past his resignation would have been expected and accepted without any qualms. Rightly so too.

Without Churchill Jim it's highly likely that you would have been executed long ago for holding left wing views.

David (Slytherin) Cameron on the tele yesterday telling everyone how we all have to pull together through these tough times. Somehow I can't see him and his cronies struggling to make ends meet.
