The fissures are opening up in this coalition government as the Oldham by-election will show. I was hoping for a general election before the middle of next year; the way this government is falling apart it could be much sooner.

Doris is right here........

.....but what he doesn't seem to realise is that this is a deliberate Tory strategy.........

The poor old Lib dems will be annihilated and the old status quo will be re-established.

The earlier the election the better as the electorate will still (just) remember the dreadful legacy of Labour.

The spotlight of an election campaign will contrast the toffish statesmanship of Cameron will the sixth form debating society geekness of whatshisname from the Labour party and the Tories will win a small, but workable majority which will sustain a full parliamentary term.

Job done...........

Think you are totally wrong here.

If there is a general election sooner rather than later, no one will now be fooled by the "can't keep a single promise" Lib-dem party who will fade in to obscurity and that will leave just labour and Conservative.

People are currently smarting at what the conservatives are dumping on this country and will run back to labour now that Gordon has stepped aside.

What labour would then bring in cuts and tax rises is anybody's guess. £1.50 per litre for petrol anyone?

I'm fully aware and so is most of the thinking electorate that the unctuous Cameron and his Tories are hiding behind the Lib Dems to implement their right-wing Thatcherite programme of cuts.

But your analysis is wrong. Polls show the Lib Dems vote will return to Labour and an election campaign taking place as the most vicious public spending cuts since the war begin to bite is expected to see the Tory vote wither. Polls are consistently showing Labour ahead and I expect that to continue as this coalition government slowly disintegrates.

Correct. For better or worse, voters gave their verdict on an unpopular PM, not on the Labour party - viz, the party's resurgence in the polls since May.

Cameron and the Tories should have inflicted a massive defeat on Labour in May but the country said categorically it did not want a Tory government.

Cameron may be feeling pleased with himself but the Tory faithful are very unhappy with their leader and his failure to gain absolute power.

No matter what your political afliation, it is worth recognising that there were some significant achievements by Government in recent years.od Here is an American opinion rightly pointing to what has been achieved on child poverty in the UK.

As a lifelong Liberal, I have been delighted by the Telegraph sting although it behoves badly for that great safety net in British political life- the MP's "surgery".

For the right wing of the Tory Party to get up to dirty tricks to try to discomfort the Liberal side shows that the Tory right is being marginalised and seriously does not like the direction the Government is going in- excellent.

The Liberal Ministers are saying in private exactly what I would hope they would be doing- excellent.

Vince Cable has put the case against the Foxification of British media in the starkest light. Dare the Tories allow themselves to be seen as Murdoch's creatures?- it gives the Culture Minister a serious political problem. Have the Lib Dems now got a free pass to take on the Murdoch media?- yes if they are sensible about it.

The Lib Dems have had a whole bunch of nasties to deal with in this first six months of Coalition Government and they have come through. Now let's see prison and human rights advances get pushed through by the Tories and see if they can hold their side of the bargain.

BSc Hons!

Jesus wept! Seriously, I had to double check this cos I thought it was a pi$$ take site!

"the necessary knowledge and skills to monitor, assess and manage waste collection" - how many public sector workers do you reckon have been employed to walk around and "assess" that a bin is full and needs emptying? Better still, how about dancing bin men?

On another note my Xmas gravy was a disaster, too watery. Can someone please save me some of Labour's education (sorry "edyouKshun") policy so I can get the thickening right please?

And finally:

http://www.conservatives.com/News/News_stories/2010/12/Labours_education_failure_laid_bare_by_new_statistics.aspx

Yet more damning exposure of what the Party of destruction and ruin wreaked upon the children of Britain. 11 year olds with 7 year old reading levels!

I shudder to think of where we would be by 2020 if they had got back in. Numeracy and literacy levels of neanderthal man I suspect.

Labour Party = State sponsored child abuse

If you are so concerned about the politics of England, it begs the question, wtf are you doing in South Australia.

I was smart enough to know that Labour would destroy the country beyond all repair and half my family is out here. The other half is still back home, thus I am still concerned about the politics of England.

WTF are you asking stupid questions for?

Educated under Labour perhaps?

Smart people who live in this country enjoyed an unpredented rise in living standards from 1997 - 2010 as Labour repaired the damage of the previous 19 years of Tory misrule.

When this blighted coalition govt is voted out at the next election Labour will have to repair the damage all over again.

The disaffected and unemployable move abroad to third world economies.

Good riddance.

Funniest quote of the year Jim...dont you mean ran up unprecedented debt during 13 years and swelled quangos and other useless public sector departments to record highs and unsustainable levels of cost to the hard working taxpayer

No doubt you will be bitter until the next election - move on Doctor Doom, Ed and the unions are of a bygone age

The principle cause of the high public debt was the £850bn cost of bailing out the banks during the worldwide financial crisis and reflating the economy during the subsequent recession .... this has been explained to you many times before.

Labour rebuilt the lamentable public services run down and neglected by the Tories. They will have another rebuilding job to do after this coaltion govt has gone.

As you so enjoy doing to others, I have corrected it for you;

Smart people who lived in the UK from 1997 - 2010 suffered an unpredented drop in living standards as Labour destroyed the work of the previous 19 years of Tory rule by ensuring the disaffected and unemployable lived off the hard work of others.

When the destructive govt were voted out at the last election it was clear the Coalition would have to repair the damage caused by 13 years of Labour misrule, just like the Tories had to in '79.

Australia a third world economy?:lol::lol:

You Labourites are as thick as your education policies.

And incurring ever more debt to do it. And so it goes on. It's been exactly the same every decade since WW2. Tories create wealth and Labour blow wealth. It's like passing the baton in a relay race.

Loosely connected with the election but so nice to see that swindler David Chator getting his just rewards. The cheek of the man to try and claim parliamentary privelige to escape the criminal charges speaks volumes and on its own should be worth 6 months inside.

Rather sickening though to hear various MP's queuing up to find a microphone to declare that that the punishment was too severe. <_< For a person in his position it's not severe enough! The judge should have added an insistence that he serves the full sentence inside if only to deter others.

Congratulations to Debbie Abrahams on securing Oldham and Saddleworth for Labour last night. Interesting that despite tactical voting, from Conservative to Lib Dem, that this previous three-way marginal and yellow Tory Lancashire seat in now firmly Labour hands as the party increased its 103-vote majority at last year's general election to a massive 3,558.

Ed Miliband has plenty to celebrate today and while the Tories took a pasting, it is the Lib Dems who have lost most and will have to consider how long they are going to be the arse end of the Tory pantomime horse.

Now let me see. Why was this by election called again? Oh now I rem it was to replace a Labour MP who'd been found guilty of lying and cheating the democratic process and by definition his constituents! All this in a week that Labour saw one MP banged up at HM pleasure and another forced to resign both for stealing money. Govts come and govts go but some things never change do they?

I'd have thought you might have been better advised to keep your head down for a while Jim.

Don't be silly.

Those two were rightly punished along with all the Tory miscreants claiming for their moats and tennis courts.

Now face the real issue of your beloved Tory party taking a hammering .......

How many times do I have to tell you that politics and politicians leave me cold. Self centred, self important and outdated. You are the political groupie around here remember. How you can gloss over and ignore the damaging consequences of the past 13 years God only knows. The Labour party under Blair and Brown set this country and it's citizens back half way to the dark ages.

For someone who says "politics and politicians leave me cold" you have plenty of opinions and as usual very little knowledge.

But no one buys it as it is clearly apparent from your Thatcherite views that you are the type of working-class Tory who gives the nasty party a bad name - a loathsome individual like Alf Garnett in fact.

If politics and politicians do "leave you cold" might I suggest you stay off this thread in future and stick to your specialist subject denigrating the hard-working "IndoPak" community with your usual racist overtones ?

Anyway, I'm not without compassion for the prejudiced and afflicted so here's some pleasant bedtime reading for you from the Tory bible.
