I heard from some Pompey supporting friends of mine that he was on huge wages. Surprised we are looking at him to be honest, we seem fine in the winger department and as a forward he isn't prolific. 7 goals in 65 games for Pompey if his wiki entry is correct.

Smells of a desperation signing to me.

I said this before, its going to come down to Sam being desperate. Who can blame him, it should never have come to this. Nothing we can do about it, but hope that our good home form continues. We coped with only Jason Roberts and Kalinic last season, so its vital we get off to a good start at least.

I do get the feeling that this loan business is interesting quite a few.

The trouble is that you will have seven or eight clubs with the begging bowl at the same time come the end of August.

There will be favours done, so if Sam keeps sucking up to Sir Alex then it might have a chance.

Only thing with Anderson is that he is injured.

Cheers for the reply Nicko, Lets hope Sam and Fergy enjoy a few bottles of wine one evening or two soon then

According to Peter Storrie, Utaka only earns a third of that. And we all know his word is his bond.

judging by his performances i'd say he EARNS about 1/10th of that

:rover: roberts and nicola up front this season spells relagation :brfcsmilie:

Not a bad shout Waggy.

Doesn’t matter that we finished 10th last season, most teams have strengthened, we haven’t, nor looking like doing so.

Could be a long season.

Relegation is an option. Anyone who says otherwise is kidding themselves. Remember our miserable run last season and that fateful game at Man. City? Yes, we recovered from that mauling, but next time we might not be so lucky - especially with our limited personnel and lack of investment. I'm expecting mid-table obscurity next season, but the prospect of a relegation fight cannot be discounted.

Couldn't agree more. There's plenty saying "we won't go down, we finished 10th last season" but that doesn't mean anything. We finished 6th the season before we last got relegated and look what happened there. Are Roberts/Kalinic the New Blake/Ward?

Only if they bring back Stroke Boy...

His impersonators are very weak. The Scottish boy who talks slowly and the little chap with the unpronounceable name.

Oh for the heady days of stroke boy....

With regards to Utaka I hope his wages are too much for us.Even we aren`t THAT desperate.....

.....Yet

I still think, overall, the quality of our squad is average – worst still, imagine an injury crisis to our midfield/strike force, we would be scr*wed.

Even with our first choice midfield, it is not great and largely unproven – and we know from experience, we cannot expect to keep Grella and Dunn fit (granted Dunn plays as a second striker)

We may not have strengthened, but a lot of you are talking like we've severely weakened. This is the first time in ages we haven't lost anyone of note over the summer. Also as mentioned by others today is not transfer deadline day.

I think we'll be in a good position for the loan players from man City or United. They wouldn't have to relocate which would be a plus point for the player.

What are the rules again regarding domestic loans again? is it no more than 2 from this country?

what ever happened to Possebon (sp?) young argy Utd midfielder he looked pretty decent in CC cup

I have been following the debates on this messageboard and feel compelled to say something about the Club's failure to sign any players of note. Guti and Raul sparked much excitement but I feel that their reputations as great Real Madrid players would have been seriously damaged by their performances in the EPL. They are both well past their primes. As for Raul, the legendary striker and goal poacher, well, we have been down that road with Robbie Fowler, a similar icon of season's past. Guti may have had a season left but we seriously could not afford a mistake in that position. As players they undoubtedly feel that they still have what it takes because they have been conditioned to think that way. Their egos are seriously affected by any adverse comments. Guti still needed to be "loved" by Real Madrid before he could move on. As Rovers fans we were in love with the idea of having two Real legends don the the famous blue and white halves but "REALity" may have broken our hearts. It was just too big of a gamble for those two players to come in and carry our season.

We will face the Manchester teams and London squads vying for annual domination; something, as a club, BRFC cannot do. The Gutis and Rauls of this footballing world are not the future of our great club. The future lies in having a capable and realistic manager at the helm showing patience and unearthing the next Samba, N'zonzi, or Kalinic and then developing him. We probably will never enjoy the lofty heights of a championship again, in the near future, but we can enjoy being the David slaying a few Goliaths each season.

As fans we want far more than what we get, that is universal! The inactivity is not necessarily a bad thing. Prices will drop and a glut of players not placed in a competitive market will mean that a manager like Sam will find reasonable offerings that carry the team forward. These players will not be of the legendary status but will last longer than a season.

Teams around us have strengthened - which therefore means we are lagging behind.

Our squad is another year older - which again i believe means we are weaker.

We have nobody of the Bentley and RSC level to sell.

Agreed it is not. But i remember SA stating he likes to get his players in as early as possible as a pre-season under their belt with a new club really brings them on.

FAILED!

On a different note i see Jol has taken Mounir El Hamdaoui to Ajax. A player Souness wanted to bring to club when playing for Excelsior.

If you look at this lads career, it really does show how hard the top two English leagues are and how poor the Dutch league is.

Wiki

A 20 goal a season player in the Prem should be worth around the £15-20m mark.

We have £2m.

Without doing any in-depth research, the loan option to me seems preferable for us – cash seems to be the main issue at the moment however there appears to be some quality available on loan (potentially).

Not sure how wage arrangements could be arranged however if one of the bigger clubs maybe this could be split (?). Is there usually a fee involved with loan deals or does it just depend?

If we could bring in a striker and central midfielder, even on loan, we could feel very comfortable – as I have said before though, the transfer market is rarely that simple, especially with little/no finance available.

There is usually a fee involved.

Sometimes, if it is a young player like Di Santo, then the loan fee might be ignored. There will almost certainly be a fee for players established beyond youth/reserve level, unless there are exceptional circumstances (fall out with management, etc.).

To give you an idea, Bolton paid £1.3 million to have Klasnic on loan last season, plus wages on top. We can't afford to be paying out that amount of cash for one season, that's half our transfer budget!

I'll be surprised if we go for the loan option, unless it's for someone like Macheda to boost numbers.

There could be greater quality available on loan though - as opposed to the apparent drivel we are currently being linked with (only speculaton though, so Utaka could just be agent talk).

Would think for some Prem loan deals (Prem to Prem loan deals I mean) the cost is no where as near as much as the Bolton example you cited.

In most cases this season though, clubs will not just be looking at their players gaining a bit of experience (wages), once those squad list are nearing completion, there will be a lot of players wanting game time, they will want to be in the shop window just in case they miss the next squad selection IMO.

Then again they may all just think like Zurab. ;) Sitting out their contracts. Wonder how many Bosman's there will be next summer.
