On this point - when do teams have to name their squads by? Is it by the end of the transfer window or by the start of the season?

If it's the latter will we see teams gambling by naming less than 25 in their initial squads in the hope that they can pick up a bargain or 2?

I'm sure Nicko said it was September 1st.

Squads announced by 5pm 1st September is correct. So that means to me a hell of a lot of last minute shuffling about and a transfer feeding frenzy. Once players find out they are not likely to be in the 25 they have to decide 'Do I want money and not play or do I want to play'. I think we will learn a lot about many players once this happens.

Does this squad of 25 business mean clubs couldn't bring up players from the youth teams or reserves if they wanted during the season?

The rules are

- Clubs register a squad of up to 25 players, which must include at least eight 'home-grown' players, at the end of each transfer window.

- Home-grown players do not have to be English; home-grown players are defined as those who "irrespective of nationality or age, have been affiliated to the FA or Welsh FA for a period of three seasons or 36 months prior to 21st birthday"

- Clubs can supplement squad with unlimited number of players under the age of 21.

- Changes can be made only during transfer windows, although in exceptional circumstances (eg goalkeeping injury crisis) moves could be allowed.

- Players loaned to Football League clubs cannot be replaced, but can regain their spot on return to parent club.

- Rules apply only to Premier League matches, not European, FA Cup or League Cup action.

- First deadline is 1700 BST on 1 September (24 hours after end of August transfer window).

In the train stations in Germany they advertise "American style tuna pizza." Having lived in America most of my life, I've never seen tuna pizza there before...

Who says it has to be the US? America contains many countries... ;)

I'm not at all comfortable with the seeming trend of replacing permanent players with those on a short term contract or loan deal though.

It's pretty desperate stuff. Also, it illuminates just what kind of situation we are in.

That's not correct. The squad does not have to include eight home-grown players.

The squad can't have more than 17 non-home-grown players. And in addition, the club can register as many home-grown players they want to fill the squad of 25, but it's not required.

Splitting hairs a bit, every manager will want to fill his squad up so in practice it will be eight home grown players.

Chelsea is missing 4, Arsenal 2 and Liverpool 3 ( Daily Mail ). I'm willing to bet £1 that atleast one of them won't be naming 25 players :)

Marlin King anyone?........Just been released!!

Hahaha Sam likes a challenge!

Isn´t that Grant fellow a striker too? Sure we have to wait 25 years or something like that but probably we are still short on strikers year 2035. King was £5M player few years ago. Or some fools paid that of him I mean. No for Marlon from here..

if we were'nt doing officialy as yet, then we certainly are "scraping the barrel" now. if the report in the L.E.T is anything to go by. andranik whatshisface....we are seriously desperate. i am one of the first to say that i am not keith andrews biggest fan, however should this geezer sign for us, which i sincerely hope he does not, then mr andrews will become a fan favourite at ewood park. i would soo much rather stay with what we already have.

Well fingers crossed that things are moving on the Grella and Zurab front, the saving in wages along with any fee related to Grella's move will surely put a solid bid on the table for Jelavic.

Amazed at the short term contract offer for Teymourian, especially before they have checked out Faty on trial. I would have hoped we would be looking for a more creative midfielder than a defensive one but hey at least it isnt another right back!

I have missed this Faty case. Just checked his Wiki and he seems to be decent player but is he coming on trial? Teymourian on very low wages is ok if we can offload Grella. Otherwise pointless move. I would like to see Jason Lowe given chance on midfield.
